The paper presents the schemes for manufacturing a microoptoelectromechanical (MOEM) accelerometer for measuring small accelerations. MOEM-accelerometer includes three subsystems: mechanical, optical and electronic. The mechanical subsystem includes an inertial body, mounted on a spring suspension in a case. The optical subsystem includes a laser, moving and fixed waveguides. The electrical subsystem includes a photodiode and electronic components. To measure microdisplacements that correspond to measured microaccelerations, an optical system based on the optical tunnel effect was used. The work considers the schemes of the optical transducer for linear and angular displacements of the mechanical subsystem. The moving waveguide together with the inertial body are combined into the mechanical sensing element that diverges in the case of acceleration. A technological process for manufacturing a MOEM accelerometer based on the 'silicon on insulator' technology with additional layers of nitride and silicon oxide for optical functional elements is presented. Depending on the character of the movement of the sensing element, the functional schemes of the MOEM-accelerometer were developed with various changeable parameters: optical coupling length, gap, overlapping area between the moving and fixed waveguides. The article analyzes the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed schemes of accelerometers from the perspective of their manufacturing feasibility and the predicted accuracy. The highest sensitivity (6.25 × 10-6 m-1) belongs to schemes with changeable gap between the waveguides. The dynamic displacement ranges of them is ± 80 nm. Lower sensitivity (1.25 × 106 m-1) belongs to schemes with changeable overlapping area. The dynamic displacement range may reach ± 300 nm. Schemes with changeable optical coupling length possess the highest dynamic range which directly depends on a chosen optical coupling length and amounts to dozens of microns. Considering limited pilot overhead and large delay and Doppler shift in LoRa (Long Range)-based IoT (Internet of Things) systems, this paper presents an efficient joint parameter estimation and soft nonconherent detection scheme. During the parameter estimation, a joint delay and Doppler shift estimation method is proposed, which is called the JDDSE method. Different from the existing estimation methods, the proposed method utilizes the time-domain characteristic of the LoRa signal and only needs to estimate a joint offset of the delay and Doppler shift instead of their respective offsets. Then, a soft noncoherent detection is developed from the existing work in order to match the JDDSE method. Simulation results indicate the validity of the proposed method under the uplink IoT transmission.

Effective control of traffic signals plays a critical role in ensuring smooth vehicle flow in urban areas. Expertly engineered traffic signal controllers can considerably minimize travel delays and enhance sustainability. In this paper, the team proposes the Model Predictive control (MPC) traffic signal control strategy using real-time traffic flow data from a vision-based camera as feedback information. Also, a realistic signal timing plan that considers National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) constraints has been developed to be applied to real-world scenarios. The primary aim is to reduce the number of vehicles across all links in the controlled area, thereby optimizing traffic flow and reducing energy consumption. To validate the proposed method, several real-life experiments were conducted at 24 intersections in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by collaborating with traffic field engineers. These experiments demonstrated significant performance improvements in comparison to the existing method.

This paper presents a novel method to maintain the dynamic balance of a Mobile Manipulator (MM) during the pick-up of heavy objects. The approach entails the generation of a preliminary reach-to-grasp trajectory, which is subsequently refined by an Optimization-Based controller (OBC) formulated as a Quadratic Program (QP). The trajectory is modified in a minimal fashion to ensure that the robot maintains balance during the reaching phase and remains balanced when the payload is grasped. This is accomplished by incorporating a balance constraint into the OBC that predicts the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) position of the robot at the beginning of the pick-up phase. This accounts for the gravitational and inertial effects that the object has on the robot. The method is validated through simulations conducted with the TIAGo robot in Gazebo. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively prevents the robot from tipping over when the payload is considered.
