In this work, we propose the joint use of a mixed penalty-interior point method and direct search, for addressing nonlinearly constrained derivative-free optimization problems. A merit function is considered, wherein the set of nonlinear inequality constraints is divided into two groups: one treated with a logarithmic barrier approach, and another, along with the equality constraints, addressed using a penalization term. This strategy, is adapted and incorporated into a direct search method, enabling the effective handling of general nonlinear constraints. Convergence to KKT-stationary points is established under continuous differentiability assumptions, without requiring any kind of convexity. Using CUTEst test problems, numerical experiments demonstrate the robustness, efficiency, and overall effectiveness of the proposed method, when compared with state-of-the-art solvers. © 2025, CC BY.

A Globally Convergent Method for Computing B-stationary Points of Mathematical Programs with Equilibrium Constraints

This paper introduces a method that globally converges to Bstationary points of mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs) in a finite number of iterations. B-stationarity is necessary for optimality and means that no feasible first-order direction improves the objective. Given a feasible point of an MPEC, B-stationarity can be certified by solving a linear program with equilibrium constraints (LPEC) constructed at this point. The proposed method solves a sequence of LPECs, which either certify B-stationarity or provide an active-set estimate for the complementarity constraints, and nonlinear programs (NLPs) - referred to as branch NLPs (BNLPs) - obtained by fixing the active set in the MPEC. A BNLP is more regular than the MPEC, easier to solve, and with the correct active set, its solution coincides with the solution of the MPEC. The method has two phases: the first phase identifies a feasible BNLP or certifies local infeasibility, and the second phase solves a finite sequence of BNLPs until a B-stationary point of the MPECis found. The paper provides a detailed convergence analysis and discusses implementation details. In addition, extensive numerical experiments and an open-source software implementation are provided. Data heterogeneity, privacy leakage challenges, the ineffectiveness of conventional collaborative learning techniques, and unresolved managing non-IID data distributions are some of the major obstacles to implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Federated learning (FL) frameworks frequently have trouble distinguishing between privacy protection and model accuracy, especially when used for delicate medical imaging applications. This study presents a novel framework that synergizes federated learning (FL) with edge computing to address these issues while safeguarding patient privacy. Our proposed Domain Adaptive Federated (DAD) learning approach effectively mitigates both inter-client and intra-client data heterogeneity, enabling collaborative model training across diverse medical imaging modalities (MRI, CT, PET) through cross-domain adaptation. Experimental evaluations on MRI brain segmentation datasets demonstrate the superior performance of DAD compared to traditional FL methods, as evidenced by significant improvements in F1-score (96.3), sensitivity (96.0), specificity (97.1), and AUC (96.7). This enhanced accuracy and robustness in handling heterogeneous and privacy-sensitive data render DAD an ideal candidate for privacy-preserving AI in consumer healthcare. By pioneering innovative strategies for collaborative model training and data privacy, this research contributes to the emerging field of edge intelligence, paving the way for improved patient outcomes while adhering to stringent confidentiality and ethical mandates.

Mixed-Integer Optimal control With Disjunctive Characteristic Time Constraints for Energy-Optimal Speed Planning

This paper considers the energy optimization problem with multiple time window constraints, which is motivated by the eco-driving of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in urban traffic. Timely crossing of signalized intersections defines complex spatio-temporal constraints, and multiple available open time windows introduce the discontinuous feasible domains of crossing times. The CAVs should select an open time-window for each intersection, determine the crossing times, and optimize the speed profiles accordingly, which turns out to be a hard-to-solve optimization problem. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a unifying approach that transforms the energy optimization problem into a novel mixed-integer optimal control problem with characteristic time constraints (MIOCP-CT). This approach facilitates the simultaneous optimization of open time windows, crossing times, and speed profiles within a single optimization problem, which can be solved by our proposed novel numerical solution procedure. The application of the proposed method in the eco-driving of CAVs approaching multiple signalized intersections demonstrates its performance within real-world urban driving cycles. The experimental results of the hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) demonstrate a superior energy-saving performance of 5.83% compared to existing methods, while also achieving real-time feasibility within 100 milliseconds. © 2015 IEEE.

The problem of non-collocated vibration absorption by a delayed resonator is addressed with emphasis on system fatigue resistance and energy efficiency of control actions. The analysis is performed for a system consisting of an arbitrary large series of flexibly linked single-degree-of-freedom masses. For the stage where the vibration of the target mass is fully absorbed by the non-collocated resonator, key forces, motion amplitudes and potential energies across the system structure are assessed. Next, a complete parameter set of the resonator gain and delay is derived, and the actuation force and power needed by the resonator for the full vibration absorption is determined. The derived quantities are utilized in forming an optimization problem to balance minimal risk of fatigue across the system structure and power needed by the resonator, under the closed loop stability and parameter constraints. Next to the gain and delay of the resonator, selected structural parameters of the system are used as variables in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem. Experimental and numerical case studies are included to demonstrate benefits of the proposed integrated structural and control design. © 2025 The Authors

A Hybrid Adaptive Filter for Head Tracking in Augmented Reality (AR)-based Flight Simulators

This paper presents a novel approach for head tracking in augmented reality (AR) flight simulators using an adaptive fusion of Kalman and particle filters. This fusion dynamically balances the strengths of both algorithms, leveraging Kalman filters for computational efficiency and particle filters for handling non-linearities based on real-time factors such as sensor noise and head movement patterns. Our method demonstrates superior tracking precision and reduced latency, making it particularly effective for immersive pilot training in AR-based flight simulations. While focused on flight simulation, our approach holds high potential for broader applications in other AR and virtual reality (VR) environments where precise, real-time head tracking is crucial. These results provide actionable design guidance for developers optimizing tracking systems in environments that require fast response times and high accuracy. Future extensions of this research could explore the generalization of our approach across diverse AR applications, including human-computer interaction (HCI), medical simulations, and gaming. © 1968-2012 IEEE.

During the last two decades, interest in grid integrated renewable energy sources (RERs) into the electrical power grids has significantly grown. The motive being a promising strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by conventional power plants (CPPs) and hence environmental consequences, decrease losses in distribution lines to improve power system supply efficiency and reliability to consumers. As a result, several CPPs are being replaced by RERs such as solar PV system, wind energy, micro hydro-turbine, fuel cell, and small gas power plants. These are installed close to customers on low-voltage and medium-voltage sites to reduce losses in the network and improve power quality, overall efficiency and reliability. However, grid-connected RERs via inverter decreases system inertia due to decrease in CPPs with rotating mass serving as an immediate natural response to frequency deviations following network disturbances. Therefore, this paper presents the design of dynamic virtual-inertia control (DVIC) scheme. The developed DVIC incorporates the mechanism to adjust active and reactive demand in response to any frequency and voltage variations to ensure system stability. To validate the suitability of the presented technique, MATLAB/Simulink model is developed and simulated under various operating scenarios. Using the results obtained simulation study, it is evidently the proposed DVIC shows improved performance is achieved than when no inertia control system applied. © 2025 IEEE.

Energy-Aware Task Allocation for Teams of Multi-mode Robots

This work proposes a novel multi-robot task allocation framework for robots that can switch between multiple modes, e.g., flying, driving, or walking. We first provide a method to encode the multi-mode property of robots as a graph, where the mode of each robot is represented by a node. Next, we formulate a constrained optimization problem to decide both the task to be allocated to each robot as well as the mode in which the latter should execute the task. The robot modes are optimized based on the state of the robot and the environment, as well as the energy required to execute the allocated task. Moreover, the proposed framework is able to encompass kinematic and dynamic models of robots alike. Furthermore, we provide sufficient conditions for the convergence of task execution and allocation for both robot models. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Mixture-of-Experts as Continual Knowledge Adapter for Mobile Vision Understanding

Continual machine learning in the context of limited computational resources and data availability is critical in the connected digital world. Current intelligent applications predominantly rely on deep learning models requiring labor/computation-intensive training. These models often struggle to adapt effectively to new data while preserving performance on previously learned knowledge. In this paper, we introduce a lightweight method for continual knowledge adaptation that can address these challenges. To prevent disruption of the existing services, we propose a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) adapter that integrates seamlessly with the existing vision model to encode new data. The weights of the original model are kept fixed during the adaptation process, ensuring the preservation of previously learned knowledge. The MoE technique enables scaling up the parameters of the adapter while maintaining a relatively low computation, making it fit for constrained devices in mobile computation scenarios. Furthermore, to enhance learning efficiency and accelerate convergence with new data, we implement a knowledge fusion mechanism that facilitates interaction between the existing knowledge and the information extracted from new data. The timing of employing the fusion module is further investigated. We find that it is conducive in scenarios where the task's performance requirements are enhanced. The MoE adapter and knowledge fusion module are integrated at each stage with minimal trainable parameters, efficiently optimizing resource usage. Extensive experiments and ablation studies validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Specifically, the proposed method prevents an accuracy drop of 43.02% on the previous data compared to the continual train method, while achieving an accuracy of 44.81% on the new data, which is even 0.34% higher than fully training a new model. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

New FOPID control Design for Flight Dynamics With Special Phenomena

The design of a flight control system (FCS) for aircraft altitude change dynamics presents significant challenges due to the inherent non-minimum phase (NMP) behavior. This behavior leads to undesirable initial undershoot responses, imposing significant limitations on internal stability and severely restricting the performance and robustness of directly applying conventional control methods. Despite the widespread use of proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controllers in industrial applications, their robustness, performance, and disturbance rejection deteriorate when applied to systems exhibiting NMP characteristics. This paper highlights the practical importance of upgrading PID-based controllers for flight dynamics with NMP behavior by addressing these challenges, with a particular focus on tracking and stability issues under direct feedback control. To overcome these limitations, we propose a modified control architecture incorporating a fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller, augmented with a fractional-order derivative filtering component (FD). This design aims to enhance transient response, noise immunity, and adaptability without adding significant complexity. The control problem is framed as a single-objective optimization task, where the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to simultaneously tune the proposed controller gains, minimizing the error between the actual and desired altitude commands. The performance of the proposed controller was compared to traditional PID and FOPID controllers through both time and frequency domain analyses, under scenarios involving parametric uncertainty and 50% and 80% loss of effectiveness in the actuator (elevator) fault. The performance evaluation was based on transient response criteria, while robustness was assessed in terms of delay, phase, and gain margins.
