This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. We believe that several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric and scalable cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The latter path will lead to THz communications complemented by visible light communications in specific scenarios. At the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latencies, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. Different options will be needed to optimally support different use cases. The resource efficiency can be further improved by using various combinations of full-duplex radios, interference management based on rate-splitting, machine-learning-based optimization, coded caching, and broadcasting. Truth discovery is an effective tool to unearth truthful answers in crowdsourced question answering systems. Incentive mechanisms are necessary in such systems to stimulate worker participation. However, most of existing incentive mechanisms only consider compensating workers' resource cost, while the cost incurred by potential privacy leakage has been rarely incorporated. More importantly, to the best of our knowledge, how to provide personalized payments for workers with different privacy demands remains uninvestigated thus far. In this paper, we propose a contract-based personalized privacy-preserving incentive mechanism for truth discovery in crowdsourced question answering systems, named PINTION, which provides personalized payments for workers with different privacy demands as a compensation for privacy cost, while ensuring accurate truth discovery. The basic idea is that each worker chooses to sign a contract with the platform, which specifies a privacy-preserving level (PPL) and a payment, and then submits perturbed answers with that PPL in return for that payment. Specifically, we respectively design a set of optimal contracts under both complete and incomplete information models, which could maximize the truth discovery accuracy, while satisfying the budget feasibility, individual rationality and incentive compatibility properties. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets validate the feasibility and effectiveness of PINTION.

Artificial neural network modeling for path loss prediction in urban environments

Although various linear log-distance path loss models have been developed, advanced models are requiring to more accurately and flexibly represent the path loss for complex environments such as the urban area. This letter proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) based multi-dimensional regression framework for path loss modeling in urban environments at 3 to 6 GHz frequency band. ANN is used to learn the path loss structure from the measured path loss data which is a function of distance and frequency. The effect of the network architecture parameter (activation function, the number of hidden layers and nodes) on the prediction accuracy are analyzed. We observe that the proposed model is more accurate and flexible compared to the conventional linear model. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Modal phase matching (MPM) is a widely used phase matching technique in AlxGa1−xAs and other χ(2) nonlinear waveguides for efficient wavelength conversions. The use of a non-fundamental spatial mode compensates the material dispersion but also reduces the spatial overlap of the three interacting waves and therefore limits the conversion efficiency. In this work, we develop a technique to increase the nonlinear overlap by modifying the material nonlinearity, instead of the traditional method of optimizing the modal field profiles. This could eliminate the limiting factor of low spatial overlap inherent to MPM and significantly enhance the conversion efficiency. Among the design examples provided, this technique could increase the conversion efficiency by a factor of up to ∼290 in an AlxGa1−xAs waveguide. We further show that this technique is applicable to all χ(2) material systems that utilize MPM for wavelength conversion. © 2021, CC BY.

Human intention recognition for human aware planning in integrated warehouse systems

With the substantial growth of logistics businesses the need for larger and more automated warehouses increases, thus giving rise to fully robotized shop-floors with mobile robots in charge of transporting and distributing goods. However, even in fully automatized warehouse systems the need for human intervention frequently arises, whether because of maintenance or because of fulfilling specific orders, thus bringing mobile robots and humans ever closer in an integrated warehouse environment. In order to ensure smooth and efficient operation of such a warehouse, paths of both robots and humans need to be carefully planned;however, due to the possibility of humans deviating from the assigned path, this becomes an even more challenging task. Given that, the supervising system should be able to recognize human intentions and its alternative paths in real-time. In this paper, we propose a framework for human deviation detection and intention recognition which outputs the most probable paths of the humans workers and the planner that acts accordingly by replanning for robots to move out of the human's path. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework increases total number of deliveries, especially human deliveries, and reduces human-robot encounters. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. The information revolution has caused many aspects of human activity to critically depend on a wide variety of physically existing or virtual technological achievements such as electronic devices, computer systems, algorithms, cloud resources, artificial intelligence hardware and software entities etc. Many of these systems are used in highly sensitive contexts, such as military applications. This implies the existence of an increasing number of unintentional disturbances or malicious attacks. Successful operation requires qualities such as robustness, fault tolerance, reliability, availability and security. All these may be summarized by the title of survivability. Survivability of critical systems working for sensitive applications involves the ability to provide uninterrupted operation under severe disturbances, gracefully degrade when limiting conditions are reached and maintain the ability to resume normal service once the disturbances have been removed. Survivability is an important, even - though non – functional, lifecycle property of many engineering systems. Further desirable elements of survivability include the ability of systems to recognize and resist attacks or accidents, adapt in order to avoid them and modify their behavior in order to diminish the effects of similar future occurrences. This chapter presents a quantitative approach to assessing survivability and an account of survivability in military systems. A scheme for survivability via replica diversity in the implementation of the AES algorithm is then presented. Following that, an algorithm for adaptive attack aversion in user authentication systems is presented that is based on Boolean transformations. An approach for increased survivability in Internet of Things (IoT) systems is then presented. Finally, an algorithm for secure data storage in cloud resources is presented that allows attack detection and avoidance. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

The Design of an H ∞/ LPV Active Braking control to Improve Vehicle Roll Stability

The active braking control system is an active safety system designed to prevent accidents and to stabilize dynamic manoeuvers of a vehicle by generating an artificial yaw moment using differential braking forces. In this paper, the yaw-roll model of a single unit heavy vehicle is used for studying the active braking system by using the longitudinal braking force at each wheel. The grid-based LPV approach is used to synthesize the H ∞ /LPV controller by considering the parameter dependant weighting function for the lateral acceleration. The braking monitor designs are proposed to allow the active braking system to react when the normalized load transfer at the rear axle reaches the criteria of rollover ±1. The simulation results indicate that the active braking system satisfies the adaptation of vehicle rollover in an emergency situation, with low braking forces and improved handling performance of the vehicle.

Off-Policy Q-Learning for Anti-Interference control of Multi-Player Systems ⁎

This paper develops a novel off-policy game Q-learning algorithm to solve the anti-interference control problem for discrete-time linear multi-player systems using only data without requiring system matrices to be known. The primary contribution of this paper lies in that the Q-learning strategy employed in the proposed algorithm is implemented in an off-policy policy iteration approach other than on-policy learning due to the well-known advantages of off-policy Q-learning over on-policy Q-learning. All of the players work hard together for the goal of minimizing their common performance index meanwhile defeating the disturbance that tries to maximize the specific performance index, and finally they reach the Nash equilibrium of the game resulting in satisfying disturbance attenuation condition. In order to find the solution to the Nash equilibrium, the anti-interference control problem is first transformed into an optimal control problem. Then an off-policy Q-learning algorithm is proposed in the framework of typical adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) and game architecture, such that control policies of all players can be learned using only measured data. Comparative simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Breast cancer is one of the most common and deadliest cancers among women. Since histopathological images contain sufficient phenotypic information, they play an indispensable role in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancers. To improve the accuracy and objectivity of Breast Histopathological Image Analysis (BHIA), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approaches are widely used in the segmentation and classification tasks of breast histopathological images. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of the BHIA techniques based on ANNs. First of all, we categorize the BHIA systems into classical and deep neural networks for in-depth investigation. Then, the relevant studies based on BHIA systems are presented. After that, we analyze the existing models to discover the most suitable algorithms.
