Silent speech recognition (SSR) can decode the activities of electromyography (EMG) from surface of articulatory muscles to the according brain information. As the essentials in SSR, feature extraction and recognition are directly related to the final decoding effects, which requires careful research, especially on small datasets. This paper collected the surface EMG (sEMG) of 10 isolated Chinese words by 6 surface electrodes on face and around, and based on which sEMG features were extracted by wavelet packet transform, principal component analysis and XGBoost (an implementation of gradient boosted decision trees) respectively. Then Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor and Random Forest were explored for recognition on the 10 words. The results indicated that the highest accuracy of 72% was achieved by the method of Random Forest based on XGBoost.

Decoding speaking intention from the cervical and facial muscle activity enables speech recognition independent of acoustic signals, thus allowing silent communication between human and computing devices. This research aims to design and optimize the convolutional network classifier for sEMG mime speech signals. The muscles involved in the vocalization and timbre modulation are found according to the anatomical map. Six-channel signals have been collected from the corresponding position using the sEMG signal acquisition device. The original signals are subjected to pre-processing, including noise reduction, active segment detection and interpolation, to form training and testing sets. Convolutional network models are applied to Figure out the influence of structural parameters, such as convolution kernel size, the number of convolution kernels and the depth of network, on the recognition accuracy. Based on repeated trials, the optimal convolution network is provided, which provide above 80% accuracy rate.

Analysis of a nonlinear opinion dynamics model with biased assimilation

—This paper analyzes a nonlinear opinion dynamics model which generalizes the DeGroot model by introducing a bias parameter for each individual. The original DeGroot model is recovered when the bias parameter is equal to zero. The magnitude of this parameter reflects an individual’s degree of bias when assimilating new opinions, and depending on the magnitude, an individual is said to have weak, intermediate, and strong bias. The opinions of the individuals lie between 0 and 1. It is shown that for strongly connected networks, the equilibria with all elements equal identically to the extreme value 0 or 1 is locally exponentially stable, while the equilibrium with all elements equal to the neutral consensus value of 21 is unstable. Regions of attraction for the extreme consensus equilibria are given. For the equilibrium consisting of both extreme values 0 and 1, which corresponds to opinion polarization according to the model, it is shown that the equilibrium is unstable for all strongly connected networks if individuals all have weak bias, becomes locally exponentially stable for complete and two-island networks if individuals all have strong bias, and its stability heavily depends on the network topology when individuals have intermediate bias. Analysis on star graphs and simulations show that additional equilibria may exist where individuals form clusters. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A framework for synchronizing a team of aerial robots in communication-limited environments

This paper addresses a synchronization problem that arises when a team of aerial robots (ARs) need to communicate while performing assigned tasks in a cooperative scenario. Each robot has a limited communication range and flies within a previously assigned closed trajectory. When two robots are close enough, a communication link may be established, allowing the robots to exchange information. The goal is to schedule the flights such that the entire system can be synchronized for maximum information exchange, that is, every pair of neighbors always visit the feasible communication link at the same time. We propose an algorithm for scheduling a team of robots in this scenario and propose a robust framework in which the synchronization of a large team of robots is assured. The approach allows us to design a fault-tolerant system that can be used for multiple tasks such as surveillance, area exploration, searching for targets in a hazardous environment, and assembly and structure construction, to name a few. Designing Cyclic Schedules for Streaming Repetitive Job-Shop Manufacturing Systems with Blocking and No-Wait Constraints

We consider a problem of designing no-wait cyclic schedules for job-shop manufacturing system with repetitive transportation tasks that are defined by sequences of operations. Each operation is performed in a sector of manufacturing system using its resources, e.g. vehicles, machines, and takes some time for manufacturing and transportation. The sectors and their resources can be shared by several tasks in the exclusive mode. There are no buffers between sectors thus when a transportation car is in a sector it blocks this sector to other cars and cannot leave it until a sector which is required by the following operation in its transportation route is free. The repetitive transportation tasks performed in a manufacturing system are modelled as a system of cyclic processes executing sequences of operations and sharing common resources according to a mutual exclusion protocol. The problem consists in finding no-wait cyclic schedules for which no process (tasks) that started execution will wait for resources (sectors) required to execute its operations and each operation will be started immediately after finishing the previous one. The casade-like structure (C-LS) system of processes is considered. This system is structurally deadlock-free therefore no-buffer (resource blocking) constraint will never lead to deadlock state. The C-LS system of processes can be seen as a composition of subsystems with two cyclic processes sharing a single resource, namely 2-P subsystems. Using our recurrent integer modulus equations model (developed in our previous works) we find for each 2-P subsystem all possible start times of the processes (if exist) that belong to a no-wait schedule and construct all possible no-wait schedules for each component 2-P. Finally, we design cyclic no-wait schedules for the C-LS system by joining the cyclic schedules designed for its component 2-P subsystems.

Study on Dynamics of Steam Dump System in Scram Condition of Nuclear Power Plant

During the scram or load rejection of nuclear power plant, the excess steam of steam generator needs to be dumped to the main condenser through the steam conditioning device to reduce the temperature rising of the primary loop and prevent the steam generator from over-pressure. For study of the dynamics and control strategy of the steam dump system, this paper established a simulation model of nuclear power plant using Gsuite simulation platform, and then studied the dynamical-varying of some important-variables in nuclear power plants during scram. The results indicated that the model built can approximately predict the dynamic changes of important parameters such as the average temperature of the primary loop and the main steam pressure. Therefrom it is concluded that the joint operation of the steam dump system and atmospheric steam dump system can effectively prevent the rising of the temperature of the primary loop and the overpressure of the secondary circuit, and thus it can avoid the opening of the main-steam safety valve.

Doping is generally understood as a strategy for including additional positive or negative charge carriers in a semiconductor, thereby tuning the Fermi level and changing its electronic properties in the equilibrium limit. However, because dopants also couple to all of the microscopic degrees of freedom in the host, they may also alter the nonequilibrium dynamical properties of the parent material, especially at large dopant concentrations. Here, we show how substitutional doping by tungsten at the 1 at. % level modifies the complex electronic and lattice dynamics of the phase-change material vanadium dioxide. Using femtosecond broadband spectroscopy, we compare dynamics in epitaxial thin films of pristine and tungsten-doped VO2 over the broadest wavelength and temporal ranges yet reported. We demonstrate that coupling of tungsten atoms to the host lattice modifies the early electron-phonon dynamics on a femtosecond timescale, altering in a counterintuitive way the ps-to-ns optical signatures of the phase transition. Density functional theory correctly captures the enthalpy difference between pristine and W-doped VO2 and shows how the dopant softens critical V-V phonon modes while introducing new phononic modes due to W-V bonds. While substitutional doping provides a powerful method to control the switching threshold and contrast of phase-change materials, determining how the dopant dynamically changes the broadband optical response is equally important for optoelectronics.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is efficient in traffic offloading in terms of transmission rate, energy cost, spectrum usage and etc. However, its unstable performance caused by spectrum reuse can drive users away, particularly when D2D users (DUs) are served as secondary users in cellular networks. Their low expectations on D2D services and frequent mode switch can block efficient D2D offloading, cause severe network congestion and result in poor quality of experience (QoE), especially in densely populated area. Hence, in this study, more than reducing the price to attract users, we propose a quality of service (QoS)- insured pricing strategy to promote D2D communication. In specific, to model users' decision-making process under the uncertainty of D2D performance, we introduce Prospect theory (PT) that captures irrational factors such as reference point, probability distortion and risk-aversion. Then, we design an insurance contract with terms of service price and insured QoS level to popularize D2D services and optimize operator's profit. Based on theoretical analysis, we propose an optimal QoS-insure pricing strategy algorithm, and discuss the practical implementation of the proposed strategy. The simulation results demonstrate the impacts of operation settings, individual irrationality and network conditions on operator's net profit from D2D offloading, and show the efficiency of the proposed strategy.
