In the age of connected vehicles, large amounts of data can be collected while driving through a variety of on-board sensors. The information collected can be used for various types of data-driven analytics that can be of great benefit to both vehicle owners, e.g., to reduce costs by means of predictive maintenance, and to society as a whole, e.g., to optimize mobility behavior. Prior to any real-world data analysis, an investigation and characterization of the available data is of utmost importance in order to evaluate the quality and quantity of the data and to set the right expectations. In this paper, we focus on the data exploration and characterization step, which is necessary to avoid inconsistencies in the collected parameters and to enable valid, data-driven modeling. The proposed data exploration considers both the frequency of samples and their values for all monitored parameters. A specific cross-provider data comparison is performed to compare values collected for the same vehicle at the same time from different fleet monitoring data providers. The study is applied to a real-world use case with months of data from dozens of vehicles deployed in the waste collection service managed by SEA, Soluzioni Eco Ambientali, in Italy. The analyzes uncover unexpected behaviors in the measurements and lead to their early identification, bringing great benefits to the company operating the fleet by improving data collection and enabling a safe modeling phase. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

An Improved Heap-Based Optimizer for Challenging Landscapes and Real-World engineering Applications

In this paper, the exploitation capability and balance of Heap-Based Optimizer (HBO) are improved by making some modifications to propose two variants of the improved heap-based optimizer. To improve the exploitative behavior, HBO is integrated with two well-known algorithm which have an excellent exploitation. The first one is Interior Point (IP) which is a derivative-based optimizer. The second one is the Nelder-Mead (NM) algorithm which is a derivative-free optimizer. Moreover, the two variants maintain the excellent exploratory behavior of HBO. Subsequently, The proposed algorithms perform a superior balance between the exploration and exploitation. The performance of proposed algorithms is evaluated through ninety seven benchmark functions including twenty nine very challenging CEC-BC2017 benchmark functions versus eight highly-cited optimizers including the best algorithm of the CEC-BC-2017 competition (EBO-CMAR). The exploration and exploitation capability of the proposed algorithms is tested using forty four multimodal and twenty four unimodal functions, respectively. In the first two experiments, Friedman mean rank test shows HBO-IP and HBO-NM outperforms and achieve 1st and 2nd ranks, respectively. In the last experiment, twenty nine CEC-BC-2017 benchmark functions are used. Friedman test shows that HBO-IP and HBO-NM secure 2nd and 3rd ranks, respectively, after EBO-CMAR;however, Bonferroni method based multiple comparison test (MCT) shows that the difference in ranks between EBO-CMAR and the proposed algorithms is statistically insignificant. Furthermore, Friedman test shows that the overall ranks of the HBO-IP and HBO-NM are 1st and 2nd for all ninety seven functions. The applicability of the proposed algorithms is shown through solving three engineering problems. The behavior is superior or equivalent to the other optimizers. © 2024, The Authors. Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a promising technique for desalination and water purification, offering potential advantages in terms of energy efficiency and operational flexibility. However, challenges related to heat and mass transfer inefficiencies limit its widespread adoption. This study explores the use of innovative materials and optimized configurations to enhance heat and mass transfer in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) systems. By integrating advanced hybrid membranes with nano-coating techniques and evaluating their performance through simulation-based methodologies, we demonstrate significant improvements in thermal conductivity, mass transfer efficiency, and fouling resistance. The results indicate that the newly developed hybrid membranes not only enhance heat and mass transfer rates but also maintain high separation efficiency, ultimately leading to improved overall system performance. These findings provide a foundation for the further development of MD technologies and suggest pathways for overcoming existing limitations, paving the way for more sustainable and efficient water treatment solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

Enriching Physical-Virtual Interaction in AR Gaming by Tracking Identical Real Objects

Augmented reality (AR) games, particularly those designed for headsets, have become increasingly prevalent with advancements in both hardware and software. However, the majority of AR games still rely on pre-scanned or static scenes, and interaction mechanisms are often limited to controllers or hand-tracking. Additionally, the presence of identical objects in AR games poses challenges for conventional object tracking techniques, which often struggle to differentiate between identical objects or necessitate the installation of fixed cameras for global object movement tracking. In response to these limitations, we present a novel approach to address the tracking of identical objects in an AR scene to enrich physical-virtual interaction. Our method leverages partial scene observations captured by an AR headset, utilizing the perspective and spatial data provided by this technology. Object identities within the scene are determined through the solution of a label assignment problem using integer programming. To enhance computational efficiency, we incorporate a Voronoi diagram-based pruning method into our approach. Our implementation of this approach in a farm-to-table AR game demonstrates its satisfactory performance and robustness. Furthermore, we showcase the versatility and practicality of our method through applications in AR storytelling and a simulated gaming robot. Our video demo is available at: https://***/ rPGkLYuKvCQ. In order to achieve a highly accurate estimation of solar energy resource potential,a novel hybrid ensemble-learning approach,hybridizing Advanced Squirrel-Search Optimization Algorithm(ASSOA)and support vector regression,is utilized to estimate the hourly tilted solar irradiation for selected arid regions in ***-term measured meteorological data,including mean-air temperature,relative humidity,wind speed,alongside global horizontal irradiation and extra-terrestrial horizontal irradiance,were obtained for the two cities of Tamanrasset-and-Adrar for two *** computational algorithms were considered and analyzed for the suitability of *** two new algorithms,namely Average Ensemble and Ensemble using support vector regression were developed using the hybridization *** accuracy of the developed models was analyzed in terms of five statistical error metrics,as well as theWilcoxon rank-sum and ANOVA *** the previously selected algorithms,K Neighbors Regressor and support vector regression exhibited good ***,the newly proposed ensemble algorithms exhibited even better *** proposed model showed relative root mean square errors lower than 1.448%and correlation coefficients higher than *** was further verified by benchmarking the new ensemble against several popular swarm intelligence *** is concluded that the proposed algorithms are far superior to the commonly adopted ones.

Fruit harvesting poses a significant labor and financial burden on the fruit industry, which underscore the urgent need for advancements in robotic harvesting solutions. Despite considerable progress in leveraging deep learning and machine learning techniques for fruit detection, a common shortfall is the inability to swiftly extend the developed models across different orchards and/or various fruit species. Additionally, the limited availability of pertinent data further compounds these challenges. In this work, we introduce MetaFruit, the largest publicly available multi-class fruit dataset, comprising 4,248 images and 248,015 manually labeled instances across diverse U.S. orchards. Furthermore, this study proposes an innovative open-set fruit detection system leveraging advanced Vision Foundation Models (VFMs) for fruit detection that can adeptly identify a wide array of fruit types under varying orchard conditions. This system not only demonstrates remarkable adaptability in learning from minimal data through few-shot learning but also shows the ability to interpret human instructions for subtle detection tasks. The performance of the developed foundation model is comprehensively evaluated across several metrics, outperforming existing state-of-the-art algorithms in our MetaFruit, thereby setting a new benchmark in the field of agricultural technology and robotic harvesting. The MetaFruit dataset (https://***/datasets/jiajiali/metafruit) and detection framework (https://***/JiajiaLi04/FMFruit) are open-sourced to foster future research in vision-based fruit harvesting, marking a significant stride toward addressing the urgent needs of the agricultural sector. © 2024 ASABE Annual International Meeting. The technology of reconfigurable optical networks (RONs) is growing to be a promising solution to effectively cater to the rapidly increasing traffic generated by the digital society. Optical technology emerges as a viable alternative because to its capacity to offer a substantial bandwidth, little latency, and enhanced overall performance. Nevertheless, it is imperative to effectively manage the physical resources comprising a data center. This study provides an experimental demonstration of the RONs, which is enhanced by a control plane. The implementation relies on the monitoring of real-time network statistics. This enables the execution of various activities, including as network slice provisioning and reconfiguration, assignment of packet priority classes, and dynamic operations. These actions are performed to ensure the attainment of the desired Quality of Service level. The experimental results show the successfully implementation of RONs using Mininet Emulator and sFlow traffic monitoring technology. The results approve that optical datacenter has minimum delay with low OSNR even with long distance and fast switching time. © 2023 IEEE.

The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, the etching characteristics of C4F6 gas are investigated using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching equipment to apply a high-aspect-ratio etching process to SiO2. The use of a CF4 + C4F6 + He gas mixture in the ICP etching system provides a lower F atom density, a higher polymerization capacity with increasing C4F6 gas proportion, and better SiO2/amorphous carbon layer selectivity. With an increase in the C4F6 gas mixing ratio, the bowing phenomenon is alleviated, and a vertically etched profile is formed regardless of the source and bias power. The etching characteristics demonstrate that ICP etching using C4F6 gas is an excellent alternative to capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) etching for the development of next-generation high-aspect-ratio-contact etching processes. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.
