Road accidents are a major concern worldwide. Research of technological solutions to improve road safety is an open topic, considering this issue from various perspectives. As widely reported in the literature, driver distraction is one of the most common causes of collisions. Even if vehicles are becoming safer and safer over the years, pedestrians and cyclists are still exposed to severe accidents. Major concerns about driver distraction is mobile phone use and drowsy driving. This paper proposes a virtual buddy designed to help drivers, thanks to warning sound messages, improve their attention level. The main idea is to recognize, thanks to different sources (video camera, physiological data, and interior environmental conditions) interpreted by a data-fusion algorithm, whenever there is a distracted or drowsy behavior, recalling the driver to the road. The effectiveness of the data-fusion algorithm in detecting dangerous conditions has been verified thanks to a driving simulator experimentally, obtaining no false negatives from distraction from drowsiness, a sensitivity of about 85% for the distraction caused by mobile phone usage or other activities different from focusing on driving.

As reported by the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), sleep while driving is one of the most influential factors in fatal vehicle crashes, along with excessive vehicle speed and alcohol consumption. Physiologically speaking, driving for more than two hours in a nocturnal environment produces a driving impairment like a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05%. In this work, we present an innovative and patented sleep prediction method based on the analysis of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) (and its subsystems) that monitors the actions happening during the transition from awake to sleep onset. The prediction method processes the Heart Rate (HR) and the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as collected by a wearable device on the subject wrist. Using a sliding window approach that operates on 20 seconds of samples (acquired at 1 Hz), the trend of the variance of HR and HRV is used to classify the subject condition according to a reduced Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (rKSS) that comprises five stages: Calibration, Awake, Low Drowsiness level, Medium Drowsiness level, High Drowsiness level. The prediction method has been validated experimentally using a set of recordings acquired in a realistic environment (AVL dynamic car simulator, in Graz (AT)). During the experiments, 15 subjects performed several rounds of the Maintenance Wakefulness Test (MWT). Each subject was equipped with a wearable device and apolysomnography medical equipment to gather both the data processed by the proposed approach, and the data set that constituted the ground truth under the supervision of a sleep expert medical doctor. A further experimental section has been conducted, involving the Italian truck company Chrono Express. 15 different drivers have utilized the built-up system for more than 13000 km. The paper demonstrates the process of developing mathematical models for identifying breakdowns of electric motors using machine learning methods. The authors have developed three mathematical models for identifying breakdowns of electric drives with a power of 55 kW, 1500 rpm on the example of sugar production: model for quadratic discriminant analysis;binary classification decision tree;feedforward neural network model. The best structures and parameters of the models were determined by machine learning methods. The performance of the models on the training and test sets was more than 96% by F-score. It was proposed to use all three models independently for diagnosing breakdowns of electric drives, while the decision maker makes the final decision on the replacement or repair of electrical equipment. This approach is justified and effective because of the diversity of models. The developed models, except for assessing the state of the engine, can also be used for simulation modelling, forecasting, and serve as information support for process operators in organizing equipment maintenance. The availability of real-time information about the state of equipment in production will allow timely repair or replacement of equipment, thereby reducing the risks of stopping production and increasing the resource efficiency of technological processes. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel approach for classifying with the 1D Convolutional Neural Network model for partial discharge patterns, that consists of corona discharge, surface discharge and internal discharge. The PD measuring circuit suggested in IEC 60270:2000 is used to record Partial discharge signals. Independent parameters such as phase and charge of PD patterns were recorded. The Artificial Neural Network for the classification model was constructed. Moreover, 2×1D CNN feature extraction was utilized to reduce the curse of dimensionality in the dense layer of the proposed PD classification model. 80% of the recorded data will be used as a training data and 20% recorded data was used for testing of the classification models. Impacts of neuron numbers and network architecture on the PD classification performance will be observed.

Dual-arm manipulation is a key enabler for significantly enhancing the interaction between humans and robots, and their capabilities to purposefully shape the surrounding environment. However, the spatiotemporal coordination between the motion of the hands required for this type of actions makes their planning not trivial. A proper definition of these coordination patterns moving from the human example could simplify their translation on the robot side, fostering the generation of effective bimanual tasks. In this work, we propose Multivariate functional Principal Component Analysis (MfPCA) as a mathematical tool to encode inter-hands temporal kinematic covariations in terms of principal spatiotemporal coordination patterns in the Cartesian domain. We compared these patterns extracted from a dataset of human bimanual tasks with those resulting from the usage of classical fPCA, applied independently to each hand (univariate fPCA). We found that MfPCA allows for a better classification of the tasks, with respect to a state of the art taxonomy. For what concerns motion planning, MfPCA and fPCA yield similar accuracy in the reconstruction of the motion, but with a smaller number of principal components needed in the MfPCA case. These results, although preliminary, can open interesting perspectives for the usage of MfPCA for human-like bimanual motion planning and control of robotic manipulators, as well as for action recognition, to enable a more effective human-robot interaction.

The paper examines a new approach to controlling deterministic dynamical chaotic mode of power system with two electric generate-sources. A control law is synthesized in the class of one-parameter structurally stable mappings from catastrophe theory. Analytical calculations and a numerical experiment in MatLab showed that the proposed system excludes the generation of a deterministic chaotic mode for any changes in the uncertain system parameters. Topology optimization in decentralised federated learning settings enables the design of policies aimed at minimizing the number of communication rounds needed to reach algorithmic convergence. Given a federation of autonomous agents, finding the optimal topology which guarantees that the underlying graph is connected is still an open issue. This paper proposes a novel energy-aware topology optimization algorithm with the goal to derive an optimal topology which maximizes the algebraic connectivity of the corresponding graph in presence of energy and communication constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated in the context of a consensus-based federated learning algorithm over an e-Health scenario.

Hearing loss impacts over 5% of the world's population, a percent rising due to aging populations, noise exposure, and chronic health conditions. To address this, we developed a non-invasive hearing device designed for individuals with hearing challenges that limit the use of hearing aids. The proposed device integrates a set of Bluetooth headphones with a smartphone, that process the ambient sound in real time through a software application and delivers to the hear impaired patient via bone conduction, bypassing traditional auditory pathways. Laboratory tests confirmed that the proposed device effectively replicates auditory perception. The developed device offers an accessible and user-friendly alternative to patients who cannot use traditional hearing aids.
