In today's world, large volumes of medical data are being continuously generated, but their value is severely undermined by our inability to translate them into knowledge and, ultimately, actions. Data mining techniques allow the extraction of previously unknown interesting patterns from large datasets, but their complexity limits their practical diffusion. Data-driven analysis is a multi-step process, in which health care professionals define analysis goals and assess extracted knowledge, while computer scientists tackle the non trivial task of driving the miner system analysis activity. This paper addresses the mining activity from a different perspective. We believe that mining systems should be able to devise which knowledge could be most interesting to users and extract actionable knowledge from large medical datasets, with minimal user intervention. More specifically, mining systems should be capable of (i) devising viable end-goals for a specific dataset (i.e., that yield actionable knowledge to the user and are feasible given the dataset characteristics and size), based on the expertise acquired during the analysis of previous datasets, and (ii) extracting a manageable set of knowledge. Automated data analysis should fuel the next generation of medical mining systems, thus enabling users to automatically mine massive data repositories. © 2016 IEEE.

Drones in flight make a variety of vibration frequencies. Therefore, gimbal system is needed to get clean images from drone-mounted cameras. The system consists of two things: one is a structure to support a camera module, and another is a stabilizer to block outside vibrations and keep the right angle. The purpose of this paper focuses on the system's dynamics model and the application of a traditional PID controller. Furthermore, the paper compares the traditional PID and intelligent-PID without any dynamics model through the simulation made of MATLAB/Simulink. © 2016 SERSC.

The ETSI model defines a generic architecture to deploy and configure virtual network functions. While many efforts from both academia and industry focus on the problem of deploying those virtual network functions, little attention has been given to the interface needed to configure such applications. This paper explores the problem of dynamically configuring virtual network functions and proposes an implementation for the ETSI MANO OR-VNFM interface that supports generic network functions by exploiting a message bus and YANG models. © 2016 IEEE.

As a classical cell balancing solution in low-power supercapacitor applications, the switched resistor circuit is vulnerable to resistance deviation effects with existing cell balancing methods. In this paper, we propose a synchronized cell balancing method for switched resistor circuits based on the consensus theory and a cyber-physical approach, with the aim of synchronizing cell voltages before they are fully charged. It is shown that the proposed cell-balancing algorithm is robust to resistance deviation effects. Extensive simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2017

In this paper, the recently proposed current-limiting droop (CLD) controller for grid-connected inverters is enhanced in order to comply with the Fault-Ride-Through (FRT) requirements set by the Grid Code under grid voltage sags. The proposed version of the CLD extends the operation of the original CLD by fully utilizing the power capacity of the inverter under grid faults. It is analytically proven that during a grid fault, the inverter current increases but never violates a given maximum value. Based on this property, an FRT algorithm is proposed and embedded into the proposed control design to support the voltage of the grid. In contrast to the existing FRT algorithms that change the desired values of both the real and reactive power, the proposed method maximizes only the reactive power to support the grid voltage and the real power automatically drops due to the inherent current-limiting property. Extensive simulations are presented to compare the proposed control approach with the original CLD under a faulty grid.

Quantum key distribution is a way to distribute secret keys to distant users with information theoretic security and key rates suitable for real-world applications. Its rate-distance figure, however, is limited by the natural loss of the communication channel and can never surpass a theoretical limit known as point-to-point secret key capacity. Recently, a new type of quantum key distribution with an intermediate relay was proposed to overcome this limit (M. Lucamarini, Z. L. Yuan, J. F. Dynes and A. J. Shields, Nature, 2018). However, a standard application of the decoy state method limited the security analysis of this scheme to hold under restrictive assumptions for the eavesdropper. Hence, overcoming the point-to-point secret key capacity with an information-theoretic secure scheme is still an open question. Here, we propose a novel way to use decoy states to answer this question. The key idea is to switch between a Test mode and a Code mode, the former enabling the decoy state parameter estimation and the latter generating a key through a phase encoding protocol. This way, we confirm the scaling properties of the original scheme and overcome the secret key capacity at long distances. Our work plays a key role to unlock the potential of practical secure quantum communications. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, hypersonic flight vehicles are widely studied. Since their high nonlinearity, strong coupling and uncertain factors, the conventional three-channel independent control design method is often unable to work well. In this paper, an active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is utilized to cancel internal uncertainties and exogenous disturbances for longitudinal dynamics. Then, the MIMO robust controller is obtained by choosing proper sensitivity functions and weighting functions to reduce horizontal-lateral direction coupling. The conventional H robust controllor is high-order, which is difficult for practitioners to implement. With frequency transformation, both ADRC for the longitudinal dynamics and MIMO robust controller for the horizontal-lateral dynamics are reformed into the static output feedback structure to reduce the high order of controller. Finally, all parameters in the controllers can be optimized by HIFOO (H-Infinity Fixed Order Optimization). The Winged-Cone, a 6-freedom NASA hypersonic vehicle model, is used as a benchmark, and Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Computing the Shapley Value in Allocation problems: Approximations and bounds, with an application to the Italian VQR research assessment program

In allocation problems, a given set of goods are assigned to agents in such a way that the social welfare is maximised, that is, the largest possible global worth is achieved. When goods are indivisible, it is possible to use money compensation to perform a fair allocation taking into account the actual contribution of all agents to the social welfare. Coalitional games provide a formal mathematical framework to model such problems, in particular the Shapley value is a solution concept widely used for assigning worths to agents in a fair way. Unfortunately, computing this value is a #P-hard problem, so that applying this good theoretical notion is often quite difficult in real-world problems. We describe useful properties that allow us to greatly simplify the instances of allocation problems, without affecting the Shapley value of any player. Moreover, we propose algorithms for computing lower bounds and upper bounds of the Shapley value, which in some cases provide the exact result and that can be combined with approximation algorithms. The proposed techniques have been implemented and tested on a real-world application of allocation problems, namely, the Italian research assessment program, known as VQR. For the large university considered in the experiments, the problem involves thousands of agents and goods (here, researchers and their research products). The algorithms described in the paper are able to compute the Shapley value for most of those agents, and to get a good approximation of the Shapley value for all of them. In order to provide quantitative and less subjective data regarding the stiffness of a lesion, we developed a tool to measure the amount of hard area in a lesion from the 2D image. The database consisted of 78 patients with 83 breast lesions (31 malignant and 52 benign)-Two radiologists and one resident manually drew the contour of the lesions in B-mode ultrasound images and the contour was mapped in the elastography image. By using the system proposed, the radiologists obtained a very good diagnostic agreement among themselves (kappa = 086), achieving the same sensitivity and specificity (80.7 and 885, respectively), and an AUC of 0.883 for Radiologist 1 and 0.892 for Radiologist 2. The Resident had less interobserver agreement, as well as lower specificity and AUC, which may be related to less experience. Furthermore, the radiologists had an agreement with the tool used in the automatic method higher than 90%. Thus, the method developed was useful in aiding the diagnosis of breast lesions in strain elastography, minimizing its subjectivity. © 2017 SPIE.

For patient well-being and also for cost efficiency, constantly improving the medical act is essential. All patients undergo a set of medical tests before going into surgery. In some cases, these tests have to be repeated in different hospitals due to the lack of a system that facilitates presenting and sharing patient's data. We present two e-Health solutions for hospitals and clinics in the medical data field. Our aim was to design and implement a unique system for medical data management. This system allows easy data transfer between medical facilities. It also improves the medical diagnostic and treatment process and it increases the quality of medical care. Also, it improves the communication between patients and physicians, decreases the duration and costs of hospitalization and improves the patient's quality of life. The second medical solution presented in this paper present the results of the medical tests directly to a screen in the operating room, further reducing the time a patient has to wait before going into surgery and also improving the medical act. Both medical solutions were tested in real-world scenarios with promising results.
