A learning based approach is proposed to calibrate the geometric distortion of a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera. Our method is flexible as it requires only a ToF camera and a standard camera calibration chessboard. We treat the noise model of a ToF camera as a black box, and employ random forest to automatically learn the underlying unique noise model. The geometric property of the point-cloud can be effectively restored by the learned distortion model. The method can be used in a range of computer vision applications including e.g. hand pose estimation. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Solar power availability is intermittent and must be accompanied by an energy storage system (ESS) so that the effect of variability can be minimized. Hence, a strategy is needed to find the optimum combination of grid power, solar power, and power from the ESS so that the total cost of energy can be minimized. A solution to this problem is proposed here as advanced Optimal Resource Allocation (AORA). This control scheme uses the prediction of Photovoltaic (PV) power availability, the real-time price of energy, and the levelized cost of energy for both PV and ESS to optimally combine the dispatch of power sources. Simulation results are presented for a 24 h prediction window and compared with a baseline power usage scheme that is based on a fixed charging and discharging schedule for the ESS. The comparison shows that AORA results in a substantial cost savings over the baseline scheme. © 2018 IEEE.

Lane detection is a fundamental aspect of most current advanced driver assistance systems(ADASs). A large number of existing results focus on the study of vision-based lane detection methods due to the extensive knowledge background and the low-cost of camera devices. In this paper, previous visionbased lane detection studies are reviewed in terms of three aspects, which are lane detection algorithms, integration, and evaluation methods. Next, considering the inevitable limitations that exist in the camera-based lane detection system, the system integration methodologies for constructing more robust detection systems are reviewed and analyzed. The integration methods are further divided into three levels, namely, algorithm, system,and sensor. Algorithm level combines different lane detection algorithms while system level integrates other object detection systems to comprehensively detect lane positions. Sensor level uses multi-modal sensors to build a robust lane recognition system. In view of the complexity of evaluating the detection system, and the lack of common evaluation procedure and uniform metrics in past studies, the existing evaluation methods and metrics are analyzed and classified to propose a better evaluation of the lane detection system. Next, a comparison of representative studies is performed. Finally, a discussion on the limitations of current lane detection systems and the future developing trends toward an Artificial Society, Computational experiment-based parallel lane detection framework is proposed.

This paper proposes a new contaminant detection and water quality monitoring approach. Firstly, we propose an enhanced water quality modeling technique based on machine learning (e.g Gaussian process regression (GPR)) that aims at improving the proper understanding of the behavior of water distribution systems. To improve the performances of the developed water quality model even further, multiscale representation of data will be used to develop multiscale extension of these method. Multiscale representation is a powerful data analysis way that presents efficient separation of deterministic characteristics from random noise. Thus, multiscale GPR method, that combines the advantages of the machine learning method with those of multiscale representation, will be developed to enhance the water quality modeling performance. Secondly, technique to detect contaminant in WDN using hypothesis testing chart will be developed. Generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) has shown a good detection performances when compared to the classical detection charts. Then, to further enhance the performance of contaminant detection, a multiscale GPR-based exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) GLRT (EWMA-GLRT) chart is developed. Therefore, this paper aims at enhancing the performances of contaminant monitoring using multiscale GPR-based GLRT and MSGPR-based EWMA-GLRT approaches.

A Novel Forwarding Method for Full-Duplex Two-Way Relay Networks

An estimate-and-forward(EF) scheme for single-input single-output(SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) full-duplex two-way relay networks is proposed and analyzed. The relay estimates the received signal from two terminal nodes by a minimum mean squared error(MMSE) estimation and forwards a scaled version of the MMSE estimate to the destination. The proposed EF outperforms conventional amplify-and-forward(AF) and decode-and-forward(DF) across all signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) region. Because its computational complexity is high for relays with a large number of antennas(large MIMO) and/or high order constellations, an approximate EF scheme, called list EF, are thus proposed to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed list EF computes a candidate list for the MMSE estimate by using a sphere decoder, and it approaches the performance of the exact EF relay at a negligible performance loss. The proposed forwarding approach also could be used to other relay networks, such as half-duplex, one-way or massive MIMO relay networks.

| The demand for sophisticated tools and approaches in heat management and control has triggered fast development of emerging fields including conductive thermal metamaterials, nanophononics, far-field and near-field radiative thermal management, etc. In this review, we cast a unified perspective on the control of heat transfer, based on which the related studies can be considered as complementary paradigms toward manipulating physical parameters and realizing unprecedented phenomena in heat transfer using artificial structures, such as thermal conductivity in heat conduction, thermal emissivity in radiation, and properties related to multi-physical effects. The review is divided into three parts that focus on the three main categories of heat flow control, respectively. Thermal conduction and radiation are emphasized in the first and second parts at both macro- and micro-scale. The third part discusses the efforts to actively introduce heat sources or tune the material parameters with multi-physical effects in both conduction and radiation, including works using thermal convection. We conclude the review with challenges in this research topic and new possibilities about topological thermal effects, heat waves, and quantum thermal effects. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. BACKGROUND:The United Kingdom reported the emergence of a new and highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant (B.1.1.7) that rapidly spread to other countries. The impact of this new mutation-which occurs in the S protein-on infectivity, virulence, and current vaccine effectiveness is still under evaluation. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study is to sequence SARS-CoV-2 samples of cases in Romania to detect the B.1.1.7 variant and compare these samples with sequences submitted to GISAID. METHODS:SARS-CoV-2 samples were sequenced and amino acid substitution analysis was performed using the CoV-GLUE platform. RESULTS:We have identified the first cases of the B.1.1.7 variant in samples collected from Romanian patients, of which one was traced to the region of the United Kingdom where the new variant was originally sequenced. Mutations in nonstructural protein 3 (Nsp3; N844S and D455N) and ORF3a (L15F) were also detected, indicating common ancestry with UK strains as well as remote connections with strains from Nagasaki, Japan. CONCLUSIONS:These results indicate, for the first time, the presence and characteristics of the new variant B.1.1.7 in Romania and underscore the need for increased genomic sequencing in patients with confirmed COVID-19.

Active disturbance rejection control(ADRC) exemplifies the spirit of the data-driven control(DDC) design strategy and shows much promise in obtaining consistent applications in industrial control systems with uncertainties, without the premise that the detailed mathematical model of the controlled system is given. Instead, it is shown that the information needed for the control system to work at high level of effectiveness can be extracted from the input-output data by the use of the extended state observer(ESO). On the other hand, it is shown in this paper that the robustness of ADRC depends on the effectiveness of ESO. Furthermore, taking advantage of the rich body of knowledge in the existing field of robust control, the estimation error in ESO is analysed and, for the purpose of improved robustness, a unique nonlinear component is added to the conventional ADRC law. The modified ADRC which is a kind of robust ADRC law is validated in simulation for a nonlinear time-varying system with parametric and functional uncertainties. It is shown that the proposed robust ADRC law provides more effective tracking performance than the conventional ADRC when the bandwidth of ESO is not wide enough.

This paper addresses the problem of receiving a timetable for a settled network with maximal synchronization. In this paper, a model has been developed to solve the problem which attaches importance to creating a timetable for maximizing their synchronization and enables the transfer of passengers from one route to another with least waiting times at transfer nodes. Next, this problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, and a new algorithm based on the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been developed to solve the problem in a short time. Finally, the relationship of iterative time and the complexity of the given network is qualitatively established. © ASCE.
