While sensors play an important role in the control loop, in practice they often are considered to be a part of the plant and the explicit interaction between the plant and sensor is disregarded in the further considerations. Based on an input/output perspective, this paper investigates the internal stability property of the control loop when this interface is considered explicitly. As a main result of the paper, we provide a Youla type characterization of all the sensors that renders the loop stable for a fixed plant and controller.

The paper is a short tutorial like discussion on the applicability and the future of the classical Smith predictor. This evaluation shows that the Smith predictor is a subclass of the Youla parametrization based generic two-degree of freedom controllers. The application of the modern, new approach is suggested having much wider design possibilities.

The control error in a generic two-degree of freedom (TDOF) control system has three major parts: design, realizability, and modeling loss. The paper investigates the optimality of the second term in this decomposition and gives conditions when the optimal regulator is an integrating one.

The machine shop at the Annapolis Laboratory of the David Taylor research Center (DTRC) provides model making and prototype support to a large variety of naval ship related engineering projects. In order to meet these challenging requirements, computeraided design/computeraided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques are being used to produce one of a kind prototypes or very low volume production parts. The use of computer aides in these cases is to facilitate the accurate manufacture of a difficult part, rather than to improve manufacturing efficiencies. In addition, the approach provides the flexibility required to support research and development projects. Several examples of prototype shipboard components manufactured using CAD/CAM techniques are presented in this paper. The hardware and software that facilitated these projects are discussed. The examples described have met the requirements to produce a wide variety of prototype shipboard machinery components quickly and accurately.
Scheduling workflows in hybrid cloud environments presents significant challenges due to the inherent complexity of workflows and the dynamic nature of cloud resources. This complexity is further increased when attemp...

The intention of the paper is to demonstrate the beauty of geometric interpretations in robust control. We emphasize Klein's approach, i.e., the view in which geometry should be defined as the study of transformations and of the objects that transformations leave unchanged, or invariant. We demonstrate through the examples of the basic control tasks that a natural framework to formulate different control problems is the world that contains as points the equivalence classes determined by the stabilizable plants and whose natural motions are the Möbius transforms. Transformations of certain hyperbolic spaces put light into the relations of the different approaches, provide a common background of robust control design techniques and suggest a unified strategy for problem solutions. Besides the educative value a merit of the presentation for control engineers might be a unified view on the robust control problems that reveals the main structure of the problem at hand and give a skeleton for the algorithmic development.

The sensitivity function in a generic two-degree of freedom ( TDOF ) control system can be decomposed into three major parts: design-, realizability- and modeling-loss. The paper investigates the optimality of the second term in infinite norm spaces and proposes a new iterative algorithm for the solution.
The work presented in this paper describes an improvement of a P-V optimal slope MPPT technique. To achieve this improvement, all the degrees of freedom of the inverter control are exploited. Two forms are then establ...

This paper revisits the synchronisation problem for second-order multi-agent systems(MASs)under dynamically changing communication *** employing the reference model-based synchronisation algorithm,it is finally shown that synchronisation for both the position and velocity states can be achieved if the union of the communication topologies has a directed spanning tree frequently *** extends the existing results obtained for second-order MASs which exploits mild communication topology condition guaranteeing the synchronisation to a more general *** analysis is successfully performed by exploiting the product properties of row-stochastic matrices, which can also provide us with an estimate the convergence rate towards the synchronisation.
