In this study, the effect of processing parameters such as roll speed and initial rolling temperature on surface irregularities of low carbon steel during multi-pass hot bar rolling process was experimentally investigated. The experiments were carried out under various roll speeds and initial rolling temperatures by using the laboratory rolling mill. The rolled bars were cut and examined by optical microscopy to check the surface quality. Finite element analyses were also conducted for given conditions to validate the experimental results. For this, an instability map developed based on the specific plastic work approach was used to determine occurrence of instability during the process. From the current study, it was found that the increase of the rolling temperature and speed is important in reducing formation of surface irregularities in the process investigated. © 2008 Verlag Stahleisen GmbH, Düsseldorf.

The control schemes that are related to visual servoing systems are often done through trial and error. Based on the classical control concept, it is necessary to have a mathematical model of the plant before designing the controller. Therefore, this research focuses on producing a mathematical model of the pan-tilt system. We propose the combination of the computer vision method with the classic system identification method, namely N4SID to obtain the dynamics model of a pan-tilt system. In this research, the system identification procedure was successful in producing a state-space model of a visual servoing system using a pan-tilt system and a single camera. This study merged traditional system identification techniques with computer vision to create a discrete-time linear state-space model. When the system order value equals three, the approximation with the minimum MSE value is obtained. © 2023 IEEE.

A new approach to the cross-layer design of wireless networked control systems under limited computing and energy resources is presented. The idea is to provide a methodology that jointly takes the aspects of control e.g. control algorithms, Communication e.g. communication protocols, and Computation e.g. energy consumption into consideration. The design objective is the predictability and optimization of the control performance for a given control application. The control performance is a complex function of network parameters e.g. delay, packet loss, network throughput and control system parameters e.g. sampling period, control algorithm. control performance predictability and optimization can only be achieved by imposing requirements on the wireless network design. A cross-layer design methodology is shown to be very useful for this purpose. To illustrate the methodology, an inverted pendulum system with low-energy wireless network is used for the cross-layer design of control algorithms and communication protocols under computing and energy constraints. © 2009 EUCA.

A control method for small domestic power plants using renewable energy is described in this paper. This method is not only capable of optimizing the working point of the plant but also implements active power factor correction and lowers the extant harmonic distortion in the line. The novel element in the proposed complex controller structure is the upper harmonic controller that minimizes the amplitudes of the 3rd, 5th 7th, 9th, and the 11th upper harmonic component in the output voltage. The proposed controller has been investigated by simulation in Matlab environment, and as a result, substantial improvement of the output voltage and current waveform could be achieved. Robustness of the method against nonlinear loads has also been tested. 0 © 2010 IEEE.

Many discrete time anti-windup schemes for input saturated stable systems to achieve certain stability and performance criteria have been proposed in the literature. It has been shown as well that an anti-windup scheme that involves directionality compensation (in the form of multivariable nonlinear algebraic loop) has an excellent transient performance. As in continuous time, however, implementation problems may arise due to the formation of an algebraic loop. In discrete time, an iterative algorithm to solve the algebraic loop that converges within a prescribed time sampling may be employed while preserving the stability and performance. Consequently, the speed of convergence may limit the application of anti-windup schemes. Alternatively, a closely related explicit static anti-windup scheme may be adopted, in which no iterative solution at each time step is required, but with a minor degradation in performance. To achieve both simple implementation and stability-performance preservation, two possible stable-multirate implementations are designed in this paper. Unlike an iterative algorithm, solving the algebraic loop is now executed only by finite number of iterations. Simulation result shows that a typical undershoot response of the explicit anti-windup scheme is now absent by allowing several iterations in this stable multirate implementation. © 2012 IEEE.

The rapid development of the Internet and cloud computing are giving people high quality online services, which are usually deployed in cloud data centers. While the clouds are not always failure-free, in case of a power failure in a cloud data center, it is important to reduce the cost of disaster recovery meanwhile ensuring cloud service performance. To solve the service recovery problem of cloud data center under a power outage, in this paper, we propose an online solution based on hybrid cloud framework, which resolves the service workload management optimization between private cloud and public one. By using Lyapunov optimization technology, the long-term online optimization problem can be transformed into a general one. Besides, we present a power-aware on-line control algorithm (POCA) which achieves a trade-off between power consumption and cost, and the simulation results show that the proposed POCA algorithm can give a better and efficient performance. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The paper presents a fault tolerant reconfigurable control method for vehicles driven by four in-wheel electric motors and a steering system. The aim of the design is to realize robust velocity and road trajectory tracking even under challenging driving conditions or actuator failures. The vehicle is operated solely with the in-wheel motors, thus steering intervention is only applied in case of skidding or a failure of an electric motor. The reconfigurable control is realized based on Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) framework, using the specific characteristics of the in-wheel motors of fast and accurate torque control. The operation of the designed control system is demonstrated in a CarSim simulation environment. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. New algorithms are presented for the computation of good upper and lower bounds on the structured singular value μ, for high order plants subject to purely real or mixed real/complex uncertainty. A geometric form of the Hahn-Banach theorem is used to develop an algorithm for computing an upper bound on μ, involving a linear program and a symmetric eigenvalue problem at each iteration. A proof of convergence to a convex upper bound on μ is presented. The new lower bound algorithm formulates the search for a worst-case real (or mixed) destabilising perturbation as a constrained non-linear optimisation problem. The new algorithms are compared with currently available software tools for computing μ on a large scale stability robustness analysis problem for an experimental V/STOL aircraft configuration. © 2001 EUCA.

Earlier investigations show that the results of hazard identification (HAZID) and analysis (e.g. HAZOP or FMEA) can effectively be used for knowledge-based diagnosis of complex process systems in their steady-state operation. In order to extend this approach for transient operating conditions controlled by operating procedures, the notion of nominal input-output event sequences of qualitative signals has been introduced, and the deviations used in the procedure HAZID analysis have been defined therefrom. The diagnosis can then be performed algorithmically by matching the deviation sequences of the observed input-output event sequences and the nominal ones generated by qualitative dynamic models. The concepts and methods are illustrated using a simple case study consisting of a simple tank, controlled by an operating procedure. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

when recognizing partially visible objects in a scene, a good global decision should be made based on locally gathered features for their recognition, since global information is corrupted. This local to global nature of occlusion recognition leads us to spectral matching technique. Unfortunately, spectral matching algorithms are not desirable for noisy data set from cluttered scene. In this paper, a top- down procedure is introduced into spectral matching for the recognition of occluded objects. Based on the two-stage strategy, both appearance and geometric information are taken into consideration. It is shown that the improvement has been made for spectral algorithms to recognize occluded objects.
