In the era of antibiotic resistance, exploring novel nanomaterials offers a promising avenue for combating infections. This study investigates the antibacterial effects of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) combined with gold nanoparticles, synthesized in situ via gamma irradiation of GQDs with chloroauric acid and isopropyl alcohol at doses of 1, 5, 10, and 20 kGy. The composites were analyzed using several characterization methods, including photoluminescence and infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurements, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of gold in all samples, with the highest concentration of 11.14 μg/mL. Hemolytic assays confirmed excellent biocompatibility with hemolysis below 2%, while MTT assays revealed that cell viability exceeded 80% for most samples, confirming their non-toxic nature. The findings showed that these materials have antibacterial activity against the MRSA strain. These results demonstrate that gold nanoparticles significantly contribute to the antibacterial properties of GQDs, indicating their potential for biomedical applications.

Spatial information helps improve the performance of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification. Some existing methods have combined the spatial information and polarimetric features by the third-order tensor representation for feature extraction. They describe a pixel with the patch centered on this pixel. But they neglect the spatial heterogeneity, which may influence the classification performance. Therefore, we firstly seek k nearest samples based on the polarimetric feature similarity for each pixel to construct the second-order tensor, whose first order denotes the nearest samples and the second order denotes the polarimetric features. Moreover, k nearest samples are searched in a spatial local region rather than the full image, which can exploit the spatial information and reduce the computational burden. Then we employ tensor principal component analysis (TPCA) to extract low-dimensional features. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the classification performance compared with other methods.

This work presents a practical evaluation of an Android app developed for grounding resistance estimation of typical transmission line (TL) towers arrangement. Such arrangements, composed by counterpoise cables, are evaluated for a two-layered soil model by a trained artificial neural network (ANN), which derives in a significative low computational cost for the solution problem. The developed algorithm is evaluated with measurements made in TL towers and compared to the solution provided by a rigorous numerical routine. The results indicate a good accuracy, with median and standard deviation lower than 7%, of the developed app for conditions where the input parameters have values within the range used to training ANN. Values outside the specified range can reach significative errors up to 5 and 17 times, respectively, for median and standard deviation.

The intricate coupling relationship among the used parts make the reuse-oriented redesign process very complex, leading to the incompatible optimization between the used parts and used mechanical equipment. To this end, a dynamic information transfer and feedback method is proposed. In this method, the structure coupling model is established to characterize the relationship of parts. Remanufacturing cost, energy consumption and material consumption are taken as the redesign objectives. In accordance with these objectives and its constraints, a dynamic information transfer and feedback model (DITF) is adopted to achieve collaborative optimization between used mechanical equipment and used parts. An adaptive Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (A-TLBO) algorithm is used to solve this model. Finally, a case in point is that a used machine tool (model C6132) is adopted to validate feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Distributed cooperative guidance for maneuvering targets with directed conmunication topologies

This paper studies the distributed cooperative guidance for maneuvering targets with directed communication topologies. First, a guidance system model is established based on the geometric relationship between the aircraft and the target, in which the nonlinear problem is solved by feedback linearization. In this design, the unknown maneuver of the target is observed by the extended state observer, and the estimation of the unknown maneuver of the target is applied to the design of the guidance law. In this process, the influence of the target maneuvering on the time-to-go is eliminated by means of direct compensation. Then, the designed guidance law is brought into the guidance model, transforming the problem of cooperative guidance into the problem of consensus. Next, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the designed cooperative guidance law are obtained by conducting the pole analysis. Finally, the designed cooperative guidance law and the method of the parameter selection are analyzed by adopting the simulation analysis. © 2020, Beihang University Aerospace Knowledge Press. Accurately diagnosing sleep disorders is essential for clinical assessments and treatments. Polysomnography (PSG) has long been used for detection of various sleep disorders. In this research, electrocardiography (ECG) and electromayography (EMG) have been used for recognition of breathing and movement-related sleep disorders. Bio-signal processing has been performed by extracting EMG features exploiting entropy and statistical moments, in addition to developing an iterative pulse peak detection algorithm using synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SSWT) for reliable extraction of heart rate and breathing-related features from ECG. A deep learning framework has been designed to incorporate EMG and ECG features. The framework has been used to classify four groups: healthy subjects, patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), patients with restless leg syndrome (RLS) and patients with both OSA and RLS. The proposed deep learning framework produced a mean accuracy of 72% and weighted F1 score of 0.57 across subjects for our formulated four-class problem. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

We report an experimental demonstration of resonance fluorescence in a two-level superconducting artificial atom under two driving fields coupled to a detuned cavity. One of the fields is classical and the other is varied from quantum (vacuum fluctuations) to classical one by controlling the photon number inside the cavity. The device consists of a transmon qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional transmission line and a coplanar waveguide resonator. We observe a sideband anti-crossing and asymmetry in the emission spectra of the system through a one-dimensional transmission line, which is fundamentally different from the weak coupling case. By changing the photon number inside the cavity, the emission spectrum of our doubly driven system approaches to the case when the atom is driven by two classical bichromatic fields. We also measure the dynamical evolution of the system through the transmission line and study the properties of the first-order correlation function, Rabi oscillations and energy relaxation in the system. The study of resonance fluorescence from an atom driven by two fields promotes understanding decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits and may find applications in superconducting quantum computing and quantum networks. Background: In insulin therapy, the blood glucose level is constrained from below by the hypoglycemic threshold, that is, the blood glucose level must remain above this threshold. It has been shown that this constraint fundamentally limits the ability to lower the maxima of the blood glucose level predicted by many mathematical models of glucose metabolism. However, it is desirable to minimize hyperglycemia as well. Hence, a desirable insulin input is one that minimizes the maximum glucose concentration while causing it to remain above the hypoglycemic, or higher, threshold. It has been shown that this input, which we call optimal, is characterized by glucose profiles for which either each maximum of the glucose concentration is followed by a minimum or each minimum is followed by a maximum. Methods: We discuss the implication of this inherent control limitation for clinical practice and test, through simulation, the robustness of the optimal input to a number of different model and parameter uncertainties. We further develop guidelines on how to design an optimal insulin input that is robust to such uncertainties. Results: The optimal input is in general not robust to uncertainties. However, a number of strategies may be used to ensure the blood glucose level remains above the hypoglycemic threshold and the maximum blood glucose level achieved is less than that achieved by standard therapy. Conclusions: An understanding of the limitations on the controllability of the blood glucose level is important for future treatment improvements and the development of artificial pancreas systems. © 2018 Diabetes Technology Society.

VRSTC: Occlusion-free video person re-identification

Video person re-identification (re-ID) plays an important role in surveillance video analysis. However, the performance of video re-ID degenerates severely under partial occlusion. In this paper, we propose a novel network, called Spatio-Temporal Completion network (STCnet), to explicitly handle partial occlusion problem. Different from most previous works that discard the occluded frames, STCnet can recover the appearance of the occluded parts. For one thing, the spatial structure of a pedestrian frame can be used to predict the occluded body parts from the unoccluded body parts of this frame. For another, the temporal patterns of pedestrian sequence provide important clues to generate the contents of occluded parts. With the spatio-temporal information, STCnet can recover the appearance for the occluded parts, which can be leveraged with those unoccluded parts for more accurate video re-ID. By combining a re- ID network with STCnet, a video re-ID framework robust to partial occlusion (VRSTC) is proposed. Experiments on three challenging video re-ID databases demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
