A Demands-Matching Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Method for Reverse Logistics

A demand matching oriented Multi-Criteria Decision-Making method is presented to identify the best collection mode for used components. In this method, the damage condition and remaining service life are incorporated into the evaluation criteria of reuse mode, then a hybrid method (AHP-EW) integrating Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Entropy Weight (EW) is used to derive the criteria weights and the grey Multi-Attributive Border Approximation Area Comparison (MABAC) is adopted to rank the collection modes. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is used to test the stability of the method and a demands-matching method is proposed to validate the feasibility of the optimal alternative. The method is validated using the collection of used pressurizers as case study. The results of which show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The management of I/O resources is an important part of virtualization. Although the traditional management is complex, it becomes more challenging in virtualization. There has been many researches on how to improve I/O performance or fairness on Linux using extra semantic data, unfortunately many of them are not proper for virtualization. Because of the limitation of I/O protocol, such extra data can not be transferred along with device data. This forms a semantic gap between VM and hypervisor. In this paper, we proposed Xen on Turnout (XoT), a flexible block I/O data transfer protocol for Xen. XoT makes it possible to transfer extra important I/O data across the gap. We also develop a prototype to prove the effectiveness of our protocol. Our result shows that preferential effect are well achieved for user to manage block I/O with the transferred extra data, with little performance lost. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are freely accessible materials for teaching, learning, and research that have been made available such that they can be freely used, modified, and shared. Prompted by the potential positive impact that OERs can have, a growing community of OER enthusiasts has been advocating for their adoption in higher education, and elsewhere. The growing demand for computer science education and training (especially in areas related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data) has led to speculation as to how OERs may be best leveraged to support such teaching and learning. The recent occasion of an international OER workshop at the 2019 IEEE Conference on Computers, Software and Applications (COMPSAC) allowed for six OER enthusiasts, all with extensive OER experience, to reflect on the status of OER adoption and understanding. These reflections, addressing misconceptions and challenges, form the basis for this paper.

Subgradient-free stochastic optimization algorithm for non-smooth convex functions over time-varying networks

In this paper we consider a distributed stochastic optimization problem without the gradient/subgradient information for the local objective functions, subject to local convex constraints. The objective functions may be non-smooth and observed with stochastic noises, and the network for the distributed design is time-varying. By adding the stochastic dithers into the local objective functions and constructing the randomized differences motivated by the Kiefer-Wolfowitz algorithm, we propose a distributed subgradient-free algorithm to find the global minimizer with local observations. Moreover, we prove that the consensus of estimates and global minimization can be achieved with probability one over the time-varying network, and then obtain the convergence rate of the mean average of estimates as well. Finally, we give a numerical example to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the beginning of research in connection with the development of a pipeline inspection robot. The authors aimed to describe and present a structure and behavior model of a robot designed for inspecting the interior of pipelines to be used for gas distribution. The robot structure comprises a driving section and a driven section, where each has three legs with two ankles. The driven section contains a group of wheel sets adaptable by pressing against the interior wall of the pipeline, thus maintaining balance and stability of the robot, especially when passing through brackets and T-branches in the pipeline. The driven section of the robot is powered by an electric motor and a planetary gearbox where torque is transmitted to the legs with wheels, thus moving the robot based on the screw principle through the interior of the pipeline. In addition, a robot behavior model (mathematical model) was made for the structure presented, including its kinematic and dynamic models. © 2017 National Technical University of Athens. With stable development of container transportation in shipping industry, the transit shipment from road to railway of inland ports plays a significant role in multimodal transport. This paper presents the method of inland port location planning based on user equilibrium. In the study, the virtual connection simulating the process of transfer in inland ports is conducted to measure the fitness of inland port location through the cargo volume on virtual connection. At last, the methodology was applied into practical experiment with the results showing that the method can locate the suit inland port location. © ASCE.

This paper addresses the problem of receiving a timetable for a settled network with maximal synchronization. In this paper, a model has been developed to solve the problem which attaches importance to creating a timetable for maximizing their synchronization and enables the transfer of passengers from one route to another with least waiting times at transfer nodes. Next, this problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, and a new algorithm based on the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been developed to solve the problem in a short time. Finally, the relationship of iterative time and the complexity of the given network is qualitatively established. © ASCE.

Human intention estimation based on hidden Markov model motion validation for safe flexible robotized warehouses

With the substantial growth of logistics businesses the need for larger warehouses and their automation arises, thus using robots as assistants to human workers is becoming a priority. In order to operate efficiently and safely, robot assistants or the supervising system should recognize human intentions in real-time. Theory of mind (ToM) is an intuitive human conception of other humans' mental state, i.e., beliefs and desires, and how they cause behavior. In this paper we propose a ToM based human intention estimation algorithm for flexible robotized warehouses. We observe human's, i.e., worker's motion and validate it with respect to the goal locations using generalized Voronoi diagram based path planning. These observations are then processed by the proposed hidden Markov model framework which estimates worker intentions in an online manner, capable of handling changing environments. To test the proposed intention estimation we ran experiments in a real-world laboratory warehouse with a worker wearing Microsoft Hololens augmented reality glasses. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate the scalability of the approach to larger warehouses, we propose to use virtual reality digital warehouse twins in order to realistically simulate worker behavior. We conducted intention estimation experiments in the larger warehouse digital twin with up to 24 running robots. We demonstrate that the proposed framework estimates warehouse worker intentions precisely and in the end we discuss the experimental results. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A New control Strategy Integrated into the Desired Safety Margin Car-Following Model Considering the Disturbance Level

A vehicular communication system can provide motion information based on various sensors. Thus, adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems based on a reliable communication system can relieve traffic congestion in a platoon. However, acquiring vehicle information entails uncertainties because the disturbance of traffic environment and vehicular communication systems influences vehicle control performance. In this study, the desired safety margin (DSM) model is employed to investigate the influence of uncertainty on car-following performance, such as starting, emergency braking, and car-following processes. Based on the DSM model, the disturbance level on perceived safety margin is introduced to characterize the uncertainty of vehicle information. The stability criterion of the DSM model with the disturbance level is derived via linear stability theory. Analytical results indicate that a negative value of disturbance level will enlarge the stable region. By contrast, a positive value is conducive for maintaining the consensus state and achieving the high acceleration and deceleration of following vehicles in the starting process. Findings show that disturbance in the vehicular system significantly influences car-following performance. To enhance the smoothness and stability of traffic flow evolution, a new control strategy is proposed in this study. Numerical experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in stabilizing traffic flow. This study highlights the need to resolve the stability of sensors and vehicular communication systems, and develop a vehicular controller to help ACC system improve vehicle control performance in the car-following process. © 2018, National Academy of Sciences: Transportation Research Board 2018.
