The naval surface combatant ship design process can be greatly enhanced by a computerized, knowledge-based designer's aid. Naval surface ship design is a technological challenge to maximize ordnance on target which requires the use of rapidly advancing techniques and systems for surveillance, detection, communication, information processing, ordnance deliverv, and propulsion, among others. This paper discusses the first step in the development of a computerized, knowledge-based (expert svstem) tool to assist ship designers in selecting requirements and incorporating the most appropriate combat svstems and certain hull, machinery and electrical system (HM&E) equipment. This Naval Surface Combatant Ship Designer's Aid (NAVSURF) svstem allows the designer to select the type of ship to be developed and required ship characteristics such as speed. It then suggests a set of requirements for the ship along with a set of combat and HM&E equipment based on the selected requirements. The NAVSURF svstem is an interactive environment that suggests requirements and equipment while allowing the user to select alternatives, ask for reports of selected items, upgrade the databases of available requirements, and upgrade the knowledge-base that makes suggestions.

Applications of model-based fault detection methods in the chemical industry have been limited because of the difficulties posed in theoretically modelling these processes. This paper presents a novel fault detection method based on estimating and monitoring a dynamic process model that is not obtained by theoretical modelling techniques. The method is aimed at detecting incipient faults in a wide range of controlled process units, and is demonstrated, in both simulations and practically on a laboratory test rig, by applications to incipient fault detection in a noisy, nonlinear process under digital computer control.

The documentation needed by users of computer systems is always a problem, particularly if their system is to be applied in real time or interactive applications. The IEE have produced a guide to help users to make sure that they ask for and are provided with the software documentation that they need. The authors consider The Guidelines for the Documentation of Computer Software for Real Time and Interactive Systems which provides users with comprehensive guidelines for the documentation of software over the life cycle of the required system.< >

An industrial process can be regarded as a collection of interconnected subprocesses, and its control problem as a collection of interlinked subproblems of manageable size. Each subprocess has its own local regulatory and optimising decision units, and co-ordination is performed at a supremal level to ensure that overall system objectives and constraints are satisfied. Optimisation of the decomposed system is performed in a two-level structure consisting of the coordinator unit and local optimisation decision units, one of each subprocess. The authors outline the ISOPE (integrated system optimisation and parameter estimation) algorithm which is based on the above optimisation principle. Its performance is evaluated under simulation and on-line application, to a laboratory pilot scale vaporiser system.< >

Two linear programming (LP) algorithms for the integrated state estimation (ISE) for the whole system are formulated and tested. It was found that a direct application of an ISE on a large power system suffers certain limitations. This paper presents an efficient and reliable two-level state estimator (TLSE) based on LP techniques. Both the ISE and the proposed TLSE were tested under different conditions. The results are discussed and comparisons are given which show that the TLSE has many advantages over the ISE.

The ship fire main has undergone considerable development throughout the past 2,000 years, resulting in a system that is critical both for normal ship function and for ship survivability in emergencies. Because of its complexity, the modern firemain system is highly vulnerable to malfunction and to damage during combat. Firemain fault detection and fault recovery are currently conducted manually by damage control teams. The advantages and disadvantages of this method are discussed, and alternative methods of fault detection and recovery are explored. An interactive computer program is introduced which uses central control over remotely situated valves to facilitate fault detection and recovery, significantly reducing recovery-time and manpower requirements. These reductions may result in savings of lives, ship systems, and ships themselves. The computer program is based upon an algorithm which is, in effect, a prescription that can be followed manually by the operator or be completely automated. The color graphic display which is used for monitoring can also be utilized for the training of damage control operators or for the evaluation of other algorithms for firemain control. Alternative firemain hardware and configurations could lead to even more efficient methods of fault detection and recovery as well as improved firemain water supply management in general.
