We study the formation control problem for a group of mobile agents in a plane, in which each agent is modeled as a kinematic point and can only use the local measurements in its local frame. The agents are required to maintain a geometric pattern while keeping a desired distance to a static/moving target. The prescribed formation is a general one which can be any geometric pattern, and the neighboring relationship of the N-agent system only has the requirement of containing a directed spanning tree. To solve the formation control problem, a distributed controller is proposed based on the idea of decoupled design. One merit of the controller is that it only uses each agent's local measurements in its local frame, so that a practical issue that the lack of a global coordinate frame or a common reference direction for real multi-robot systems is successfully solved. Considering another practical issue of real robotic applications that sampled data is desirable instead of continuous-time signals, the sampled-data based controller is developed. Theoretical analysis of the convergence to the desired formation is provided for the multiagent system under both the continuous-time controller with a static/moving target and the sampled-data based one with a static target. Developing control of Cryo-Pump Test Cold-Box System: Some Investigations

Tokamak, a leading contender of practical fusion reactor, is a popular system using powerful superconducting magnets to confine plasma in a toroidal space to conduct controlled thermo-nuclear reactions required for fusion power research. Tokamak uses state-of-the-art superconducting magnet system requiring specialized cryogenic cooling, which is achieved and maintained by a forced-flow of helium at supercritical state. Supercritical helium mass flow rate as high as 2.21 kg/s at the cryogenic temperature of ~ 4.6 K is necessary not only to obtain cryogenic conditions required for these toroidal superconducting magnet system, but also to regulate cryo-conditions against severe thermal shocks and disturbances due to exothermic plasma reactions and other operational variations. In prior work, the largest cryogenic centrifugal pump was developed to meet and obtain such special cryogenic conditions with various normal and off-normal operating modes. However, such special cryo-pump needs to be tested first rigorously in a special, custom-designed cryogenic test set-up before using them in actual Tokamak systems. A dedicated test-system, called Test Cold-Box, is proposed and developed to test such large cryogenic centrifugal pump. The test-system consists of a liquid helium sub-cooler bath, heat-exchangers, control valves, heaters, etc. In our work, a suitable multi-loop control scheme for the Test Cold-Box is also proposed. Classic multi-loop PID control scheme with classic Ziegler-Nichols and modern IMC tuning have been evaluated using ASPEN HYSYS® simulation environment. The paper describes this Test Cold-Box system including cryo-pump along with suitable controls, and its operational analysis in ASPEN HYSYS® simulation environment. © 2018

In this paper, we consider the problem of overvoltage arising in PV residential microgrids due to excessive power injection into the grid by the PV generators. We propose a decentralized switched controller to curtail excess active power in order to avoid overvoltage while considering the active power constraints. Under different power constraints the system will take different forms: LTI, switched or hybrid system. Convergence to the voltage limit is shown for all three cases. © 2017

In this paper, we consider the problem of overvoltage arising in PV residential microgrids due to excessive power injection into the grid by the PV generators. We propose a decentralized optimal integral controller to curtail excess active power in order to avoid overvoltage. Considering the voltage and active power constraints, we show that the proposed controller leads to maximum power injection into the grid. We discuss the objective of fair power curtailment and show that it is in contrast with our objective of maximum power transfer. Finally, we present the performance of the controller through simulation studies. © 2017

In this paper, a reinforcement learning based control law is proposed to solve the attitude synchronization problem of the leader-following multi-quadrotor systems. The overall system is composed of a team of quadrotors, modeled with highly nonlinear and coupled dynamics. An optimal control solution is obtained by solving an augmented HamiltonJacobi-Bellman equation. A reinforcement learning approach is used to learn the optimal control law. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

A hidden Markov model for route and destination prediction

We present a simple model and algorithm for predicting driver destinations and routes, based on the input of the latest road links visited as part of an ongoing trip. The algorithm may be used to predict any clusters previously observed in a driver's trip history. It assumes that the driver's historical trips are grouped into clusters sharing similar patterns. Given a new trip, the algorithm attempts to predict the cluster in which the trip belongs. The proposed algorithm has low temporal complexity. In addition, it does not require the transition and emission matrices of the Markov chain to be computed. Rather it relies on the frequencies of co-occurrences of road links and trip clusters. We validate the proposed algorithm against an experimental dataset. We discuss the success and convergence of the algorithm and show that our algorithm has a high prediction success rate. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) monitoring method is commonly used for non-Gaussian process monitoring. In GMM monitoring method, the final number of Gaussian components and the statistical distribution parameters are estimated through the improved Figueiredo-Jain (F-J) algorithm in the modeling phase. However, the data dimensionality of modern industry is high, the number of initial Gaussian components is large for the accuracy of the algorithm. Under this condition, the relative small number of samplings makes the denominator in the weight estimation formula of the improved F-J algorithm become zero and the algorithm suspends. To make the algorithm work well in an acceptable modeling time, we deduce the Initial-Parameter-Criterion among initial Gaussian components, data dimension, sampling number and propose the Initial-Parameter-Criterion based GMM (IPC-GMM) monitoring method. The proposed monitoring method is used for TE process monitoring, simulation results reveal the effectiveness and necessity of IPC-GMM monitoring method.

In this paper, we consider the problem of vehicular positioning enhancement with emerging connected vehicles (CV) technologies. In order to actually describe the scenario, the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) filter is used for depicting varies of observation models. A CV-enhanced IMM filtering approach is proposed to locate a vehicle by data fusion from both coarse GPS data and the Doppler frequency shifts (DFS) measured from dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) radio signals. Simulation results state the effectiveness of the proposed approach called CV-IMM-EKF. © 2018, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.
