In this paper, we present and validate an analytical expression for the induced current on a long terminated line, under the thin wire approximation. The coefficients of the analytical expression are determined using a procedure based on the knowledge of the exact solutions for a short line. The length of the short line is independent of the original line length, and therefore the method is very efficient when considering the electromagnetic coupling to very long lines. © 1998 University of Rome a La Sapienza.

This paper presents a progressive image transmission technique based on fractal surface interpolation (FSI). This technique is an extension of our previous work, and relies on the extraction and reconstruction of self-affine fractal surfaces with specified Hurst exponents, H/sup */. Fractional Brownian motion (fBm) through midpoint displacement (MPD) provides the basis for generating these surfaces between interpolation points. Progressive transmission is achieved by ordering increasing levels of detail within the FSI representation. This allows for quicker recognition of the transmitted or reconstructed image within the first 5 percent of the transmission process.

Using a spectrum analyzer and synthesized signal generator, several measurements for the frequency-domain characterization of the radio channel in the 60 GHz band were performed. In the experiments, a carrier wave (CW) was swept with a constant amplitude across the 100 MHz band, centered around 59.9 GHz. The channel frequency response was measured at the receiver side. The results can be used for the design of an OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplex) system. The measurement environments were a corridor and a big college room in a high-rise office building (indoor) and a parking site and a grassfield at the side of that building (outdoor). The spectrum samples were taken in each of the environments. From such samples, it is possible to calculate the Rice parameter k and the path loss coefficients. It was necessary to the develop an appropriate measurement analysis, stemming from the fact that the spectrum analyzer gives no information on the phase, only amplitude. Measurement analysis method and results are explained.

A grey box model-based method for fault diagnosis is proposed in this paper. The method is based on a first principle model of the process unit: a heat exchanger, and on a grey box model of the faults: the deterioration of the heat transfer surface by aging and the leaking of the outer container. The deterioration of the heat transfer surface is due to material settling, and in old heat exchangers pieces of this material can break off and cause damage in the equipment. A recursive least squares estimator with forgetting factor is used to track both the heat transfer coefficients and the cold side volume. The heat transfer coefficients are estimated both from the hot and cold side equations. The settled material breakage fault is detected via detection of abrupt positive jumps in the estimated heat transfer coefficients using a detector based on a cumulative sum (CUSUM) test. The proposed method enables simultaneous detection of the two fault types considered. Fault localization along the equipment length is also possible when temperature measurements are available along the length.

In this paper we present some final results from a research project focused on introducing automatic control to the operation of cupola iron furnaces. The main aim of this research is to improve the operational efficiency and performance of the cupola furnace, an important foundry process used to melt iron. Previous papers have described the development of appropriate control system architectures for the cupola. In this paper experimental data is used to calibrate the model, which is taken as a first-order multivariable system with time delay. Then relative gain analysis is used to select loop pairings to be used in a multiloop controller. The resulting controller pairs meltrate with blast volume, iron temperature with oxygen addition, and carbon composition with metal-to-coke ratio. Special (nonlinear) filters are used to compute meltrate from actual scale readings of the amount of iron produced and to smooth the temperature measurement. The temperature and meltrate loops use single-loop PI control. The composition loop uses a Smith predictor to discount the deadtime associated with mass transport through the furnace. Experiments conducted at the Department of Energy Albany research Center's experimental research cupola validate the conceptual controller design and provide proof-of-concept of the idea of controlling a foundry cupola. © 1998 AACC.

Proposes a robust visual servoing scheme for robot manipulator with eye-in-hand camera configuration. To perform the tasks defined in the image plane, the velocity Jacobian matrix is used to transform the camera motion to the object position change. In addition, a dynamic learning controller is designed to improve the tracking performance of robotic system. The proposed control scheme is implemented for tasks of tracking moving objects and shown to outperform the conventional visual servo system without the dynamic control loop in convergence and robustness to parameter uncertainty, disturbances, low sampling rate, etc.

We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.
