This paper presents a fire alarm vision system based on flame detection algorithm of infrared image. The presented flame detection algorithm measures the luminance variation of candidate flame blocks of the IR image and it determines existence of the fire according to the amount of variation of luminance. By using the test images, the simulation of flame detection algorithm was performed and implemented fire alarm vision system was tested. As a result, the evaluated correct detection ratio was 85.7%. © 2011 AICIT.

Based on a set of requirements identified for photonic crystals intended for use in optoelectronic devices, we have developed a method of fabricating three-dimensional photonic crystals that involves stacking air/semiconductor gratings by wafer fusion approach. Precise alignment of the stacked layers is achieved through the use of a laser beam assisted very precise alignment system, and three-dimensional photonic crystal has been successfully fabricated for the infrared and optical communication wavelength regions. We have also developed a photonic crystal waveguide providing sharp 90° bend.

Structure of Frilled Carbon Nanowires Synthesized by Sulfur-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition

Effects of hydrogen sulfide on the structure of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The CNTs were synthesized with an iron thin-film catalyst by microwave plasma-assisted CVD on the diamond substrate. The HRTEM images revealed that essentially all of the CNTs obtained in this study were multiwall (MWCNT). The addition of H2S resulted in nanotubes with split skins as cornhusks and/or frills. Electron energy loss spectra of the cornhusks indicated that they consist of sp2, sp3 and amorphous carbon phase. The spectra revealed that the sp3 to sp2 ratio at the points where cornhusks divide from the main stem was more than that at the edge of the cornhusks. No evidence of sulfur incorporation into the MWCNTs grown with the H2S addition was found. We speculate that the chemical nature of sulfur on the CNT growth yields such anomalous structure.

Multifunctional Hyper-Structured Molecules

To fill the gap between molecular design and the architecture of three-dimensional functional structures, we propose novel hyper-structured molecules (HSMs) based on welldefined and topologically controlled molecular systems. To this end we have developed carbazole dendrimers, trimers, cyclic oligomers and chromogenic calix[4]arenes as HSMs. Photorefractivity was selected as the primary target function of these HSMs. Oligomers developed in our laboratory exhibit intrinsic photocarrier generation, transport, electro-optic, film-forming and poling properties. These multifunctional properties allow us to demonstrate optical image processing using optical phase conjugation. The topological shapes of indoaniline-derived calix[4]arenes were studied by hyper-Rayleigh scattering. The two indoaniline moieties in calix[4]arene derivatives were pre-aligned so as to enhance the net molecular hyperpolarizability. Besides dendric oligomers, cyclic oligomers can be used as a molecular platform which allows molecular level tuning of shape, size and topology for superior opto-electronic functions.

Agile parallel bioinformatics workflow management using Pwrake

Background: In bioinformatics projects, scientific workflow systems are widely used to manage computational procedures. Full-featured workflow systems have been proposed to fulfil the demand for workflow management. However, such systems tend to be over-weighted for actual bioinformatics practices. We realize that quick deployment of cutting-edge software implementing advanced algorithms and data formats, and continuous adaptation to changes in computational resources and the environment are often prioritized in scientific workflow management. These features have a greater affinity with the agile software development method through iterative development phases after trial and error. Here, we show the application of a scientific workflow system Pwrake to bioinformatics workflows. Pwrake is a parallel workflow extension of Ruby's standard build tool Rake, the flexibility of which has been demonstrated in the astronomy domain. Therefore, we hypothesize that Pwrake also has advantages in actual bioinformatics workflows. Findings. We implemented the Pwrake workflows to process next generation sequencing data using the Genomic Analysis Toolkit (GATK) and Dindel. GATK and Dindel workflows are typical examples of sequential and parallel workflows, respectively. We found that in practice, actual scientific workflow development iterates over two phases, the workflow definition phase and the parameter adjustment phase. We introduced separate workflow definitions to help focus on each of the two developmental phases, as well as helper methods to simplify the descriptions. This approach increased iterative development efficiency. Moreover, we implemented combined workflows to demonstrate modularity of the GATK and Dindel workflows. Conclusions: Pwrake enables agile management of scientific workflows in the bioinformatics domain. It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

Strong Mechanoluminescence from Oxynitridosilicate Phosphors

We successfully developed a novel Mechanoluminescence (ML) material with water resistance, oxynitridosilicate; BaSi2O2N2: Eu2+. The crystal structure, photoluminescence (PL) and ML properties were characterized. The ML of BaSi2O2N2: Eu2+ is so strong that the blue-green emission can be observed by the naked eyes clearly. In addition, it shows superior water resistance property. No changes were found in the ML intensities during the total water treatment test.

To elucidate whether tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) resistancein chronic myeloid leukemia is associated with characteristicgenomic alterations, we analyzed DNA samples from 45 TKI-resistantchronic myeloid leukemia patients with 250K single nucleotidepolymorphism arrays. From 20 patients, matched serial samplesof pretreatment and TKI resistance time points were available.Eleven of the 45 TKI-resistant patients had mutations of BCR-ABL1,including 2 T315I mutations. Besides known TKI resistance-associatedgenomic lesions, such as duplication of the BCR-ABL1gene (n= 8) and trisomy 8 (n = 3), recurrent submicroscopic alterations,including acquired uniparental disomy, were detectable on chromosomes1, 8, 9, 17, 19, and 22. On chromosome 22, newly acquired andrecurrent deletions of the IGLC1 locus were detected in 3 patients,who had previously presented with lymphoid or myeloid blastcrisis. This may support a hypothesis of TKI-induced selectionof subclones differentiating into immature B-cell progenitorsas a mechanism of disease progression and evasion of TKI sensitivity.

Functional interactions between steroid hormones and neurotrophin BDNF

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),a critical neurotrophin,regulates many neuronal aspects including cell differentiation,cell survival,neurotransmission,and synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system(CNS) .Though BDNF has two types of receptors,high affinity tropomyosin-related kinase(Trk) B and low affinity p75 receptors,BDNF positively exerts its biological effects on neurons via activation of TrkB and of resultant intracellular signaling cascades including mitogenactivated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase,phospholipase Cγ,and phosphoinositide 3-kinase ***,it is possible that alteration in the expression and/or function of BDNF in the CNS is involved in the pathophysiology of various brain diseases such as stroke,Parkinson's disease,Alzheimer's disease,and mental *** the other hand,glucocorticoids,stress-induced steroid hormones,also putatively contribute to the pathophysiology of ***,in addition to the reduction in BDNF levels due to increased glucocorticoid exposure,current reports demonstrate possible interactions between glucocorticoids and BDNF-mediated neuronal functions. Other steroid hormones,such as estrogen,are involved in not only sexual differentiation in the brain,but also numerous neuronal events including cell survival and synaptic ***,it is well known that estrogen plays a role in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease,Alzheimer's disease,and mental illness,while serving to regulate BDNF expression and/or ***,we present a broad overview of the current knowledge concerning the association between BDNF expression/function and steroid hormones(glucocorticoids and estrogen).
