Terrestrial glacial records from the Patagonian Andes and New Zealand Alps document quasi-synchronous Southern Hemisphere-wide glacier advances during the late Quaternary. However, these records are inherently incomplete. Here, we provide a continuous marine record of western-central Patagonian ice sheet (PIS) extent over a complete glacial-interglacial cycle back into the penultimate glacial (~140 ka). Sediment core MR16-09 PC03, located at 46°S and ~150 km offshore Chile, received high terrestrial sediment and meltwater input when the central PIS extended westward. We use biomarkers, foraminiferal oxygen isotopes, and major elemental data to reconstruct terrestrial sediment and freshwater input related to PIS variations. Our sediment record documents three intervals of general PIS marginal fluctuations, during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 (140 to 135 ka), MIS 4 (~70 to 60 ka), and late MIS 3 to MIS 2 (~40 to 18 ka). These higher terrigenous input intervals occurred during sea-level low stands, when the western PIS covered most of the Chilean fjords, which today retain glaciofluvial sediments. During these intervals, high-amplitude phases of enhanced sediment supply occur at millennial timescales, reflecting increased ice discharge most likely due to a growing PIS. We assign the late MIS 3 to MIS 2 phases and, by inference, older advances to Antarctic cold stages. We conclude that the increased sediment/meltwater release during Southern Hemisphere millennial-scale cold phases was likely related to higher precipitation caused by enhanced westerly winds at the northwestern margin of the PIS. Our records complement terrestrial archives and provide evidence for PIS climate sensitivity.

We represent a joint X-ray, weak-lensing, and optical analysis of the optically-selected merging cluster, HSC J085024+001536, from the Subaru HSC-SSP survey. Both the member galaxy density and the weak-lensing mass map show that the cluster is composed of southeast and northwest components. The two-dimensional weak-lensing analysis shows that the southeast component is the main cluster, and the sub- and main-cluster mass ratio is 0.32+0.75-023. The northwest subcluster is offset by ∼ 700 kpc from the main cluster center, and their relative line-of-sight velocity is ∼ 1300kms−1 from spectroscopic redshifts of member galaxies. The X-ray emission is concentrated around the main cluster, while the gas mass fraction within a sphere of 1' radius of the subcluster is only fgas = 4.0+2.3−33%, indicating that the subcluster gas was stripped by ram pressure. X-ray residual image shows three arc-like excess patterns, of which two are symmetrically located at ∼ 550 kpc from the X-ray morphological center, and the other is close to the X-ray core. The excess close to the subcluster has a cold-front feature where dense-cold gas and thin-hot gas contact. The two outer excesses are tangentially elongated about ∼ 450 − 650 kpc, suggesting that the cluster is merged with a non-zero impact parameter. Overall features revealed by the multi-wavelength datasets indicate that the cluster is at the second impact or later. Since the optically-defined merger catalog is unbiased for merger boost of the intracluster medium, X-ray follow-up observations will pave the way to understand merger physics at various phases. BACKGROUND:The neutral amino acid transporter SLC7A8 (LAT2) has been described as a key regulator of metabolic adaptation. LAT2 mutations in human populations have been linked to the early onset of age-related hearing loss and cataract growth. As LAT2 was previously found to be highly expressed in skeletal muscle, here we characterised its role in the regulation of skeletal muscle amino acid flux and metabolic adaptation to fasting. METHODS:Wild-type (WT) and LAT2 knock-out (LAT2KO) mice were exposed to short- and long-periods of fasting (16 and 48 h). The impact of the absence of LAT2 on amino acid content, gene expression, proteolysis activity, muscle tone, and histology was measured. To characterise the impact on muscle degradation, we tested LAT2 KO mice in cancer-associated cachexia, streptozocin-induced Type-1 diabetes, and ageing models. RESULTS:LAT2KO mice experienced a notable reduction in body weight during fasting (WT:14% and LAT2KO:18%, p = 0.02), with a greater reduction in fat mass (0.5-fold, p = 0.013) and a higher relative retention of muscle mass (1.3-fold, p = 0.0003) compared with WT. The absence of LAT2 led to increased intramuscular glutamine (Gln) accumulation (6.3-fold, p < 0.0001), accompanied by a reduction in skeletal muscle proteolysis during fasting (0.61-fold, p = 0.0004) primarily due to decreased proteasomal and autophagic activity (0.45-fold, p = 0.016 and 0.7-fold, p = 0.002, respectively). Ex vivo incubation of LAT2KO muscle with rapamycin recovered proteolysis function, demonstrating a mTORC1-dependent pathway. Decreased proteolysis in LAT2KO animals was associated with increased mTORC1 translocation to the lysosome (mTORC1-Lamp1 colocalization in fasted LAT2KO muscles was 1.23-fold, p < 0.0001). Of the three muscle loss models tested, differences were observed only during ageing. Young LAT2KO mice (3 M) exhibited muscle tone and MurF1 expression levels comparable to those of older WT mice (12 M) (0.44-fold, p = 0.02 and 0.48-fold,

It has long been speculated that many starburst or compact dwarf galaxies are resulted from dwarfdwarf galaxy merging, but unequivocal evidence for this possibility has rarely been reported in the literature. We present the first study of deep optical broadband images of a gas-dominated blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) VCC848 (M∗2×108Mo) which hosts extended stellar shells and thus is confirmed to be a dwarf-dwarf merger. VCC848 is located in the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. By analyzing the stellar light distribution, we found that VCC848 is the result of a merging between two dwarf galaxies with a primary-to-secondary mass ratio 5 for the stellar components and 2 for the presumed dark matter halos. The secondary progenitor galaxy has been almost entirely disrupted. The age-mass distribution of photometrically selected star cluster candidates in VCC848 implies that the cluster formation rate (CFR, ∝ star formation rate) was enhanced by a factor of ∼ 7 - 10 during the past ∼ 1 Gyr. The merging-induced enhancement of CFR peaked near the galactic center a few hundred Myr ago and has started declining in the last few tens of Myr. The current star formation activities, as traced by the youngest clusters, mainly occur at large galactocentric distances ( 1 kpc). The fact that VCC848 is still (atomic) gas-dominated after the period of most violent collision suggests that gas-rich dwarf galaxy merging can result in BCD-like remnants with extended atomic gas distribution surrounding a blue compact center, in general agreement with previous numerical simulations. Images document scientific discoveries and are prevalent in modern biomedical research. Microscopy imaging in particular is currently undergoing rapid technological advancements. However for scientists wishing to publish the obtained images and image analyses results, there are to date no unified guidelines. Consequently, microscopy images and image data in publications may be unclear or difficult to interpret. Here we present community-developed checklists for preparing light microscopy images and image analysis for publications. These checklists offer authors, readers, and publishers key recommendations for image formatting and annotation, color selection, data availability, and for reporting image analysis workflows. The goal of our guidelines is to increase the clarity and reproducibility of image figures and thereby heighten the quality and explanatory power of microscopy data is in publications. © 2023, CC BY-SA.
