Drastic effect of additional Mo on diamond nucleation was observed in the system of Mc60Cc40 (mixture of 60 mol% MgCO3 and 40 mol% CaCO3)-graphite at 7.7 GPa, 1700 and 1800 degrees C for 1 h. The decrease of temperature required for nucleation of diamond by addition of Mo is 200 degrees C, compared with the temperature in the system of Mc60Cc40-graphite (Sato et al., Diamond Related Mater. 8 (1999) 1900). These results indicate that a lower energy barrier is expected for the nucleation in the Mc60Cc40-Mo-graphite system. Therefore, this nucleation process in the system of Mc60Cc40-graphite-Mo can be considered to be different from the spontaneous nucleation in the system of Mc60Cc40-graphite. Two probable models for nucleation can be suggested: (1) heterogeneous nucleation in which nucleation is affected by MoC that is formed by the reaction between the carbonate and Mo and (2) achievement of enough concentration of carbon for formation of nuclei by the reaction between the carbonate and Mo. The patients with ASD characteristically show impaired social skills. Today, many genetic studies identify numerous susceptible genes and genetic loci associated with ASD. Although some genetic factors can lead to abnormal brain function linked to ASD phenotypes, the pathogenic mechanism of ASD is still unclear. A chunking algorithm with a Markov model is extended to accept bracketing constraints. The extended algorithm is implemented by modifying a state-of-the-art Japanese dependency parser. Then the effect of bracketing constraints in preventing parsing errors is evaluated. A method for improving the parser's accuracy is proposed. That method adds brackets according to a set of optimal brackets obtained from a training corpus. Although the method's coverage is limited, the F-measure for the sentences to which the method adds brackets is improved by about 7%.

At present work, we report on the development of fuel generation chip driven by the solar light for portable micro fuel cell devices. In the chip, fuel (H2 and O2) are generated by the integrated photocatalyic water splitting system utilizing bottom up and top down technologies. Generated gases are separated by specially designed hydrophobic modified channels. We describe the device concept and fabrication technologies to integrate the photocatalytic system (which is based on TiO2 brush type nanorods structure) in the microchip. Also we demonstrate the working principle of the H2/O2 generation microchip under the solar light and the maximum of photocurrent density ~35-20 μA/cm2 has been recorded during the gas generation and separation.

A change of mitochondrial membrane permeability is essential for apoptosis, leading to translocation of apoptogenic cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor into the cytoplasm. We recently showed that the Bcl-2 family of proteins regulate cytochrome c release and the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨ) by directly modulating the activity of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) through binding. Here we investigated the biochemical role of the conserved N-terminal homology domain (BH4) of Bcl-xL, which has been shown to be essential for inhibition of apoptosis, with respect to the regulation of mitochondrial membrane permeability and found that BH4 was required for Bcl-xL to prevent cytochrome c release and ΔΨ loss. A study using VDAC liposomes revealed that Bcl-xL, but not Bcl-xL lacking the BH4 domain, inhibited VDAC activity. Furthermore, BH4 oligopeptides of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, but not mutant peptides, were able to inhibit both VDAC activity on liposomes even in the presence of Bax and apoptotic ΔΨ loss in isolated mitochondria. It was also shown that the BH4 domain, fused to the protein transduction domain of HIV TAT protein (TAT-BH4), efficiently prevented apoptotic cell death. These results indicate that the BH4 of Bcl-2/Bcl-xL is essential and sufficient for inhibiting VDAC activity, which in turn prevents apoptotic mitochondrial changes, and for preventing apoptotic cell death. Finally, the data suggest that the TAT-BH4 peptide is potentially useful as a therapeutic agent for diseases caused by accelerated apoptosis.
