We prepared mixed films of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) and 4′-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) on water by co-spreading method. The resulting films could be transferred onto mica at various surface pressures ranging from 0 to 4 mN m-1. The morphologies of the transferred films were characterized by atomic force microscope. A highly homogeneous dot array pattern of surface micelles grew with increasing surface pressure from an initially smooth monolayer with monomolecularly expanded polystyrene block. The various compositions of block copolymer segments provided variations of the dot spacing and height in the nano dot array patterns corresponding to the molecular structure of block copolymer.

Porous polyimide (PI) nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by the incorporation of a second polymer as the template into poly(amic acid) (PAA, precursor of PI) via the reprecipitation method. First, porous PAA nanoparticles were generated by the injection of mixed PAA-template solution into cyclohexane. Then PAA was converted to PI by two-step imidization without morphology transformation. The morphology of porous PI nanoparticles, which had superficial pores in the range of 30-100 nm, was affected by the miscibility of PAA and template. The formation mechanism was also discussed.

A new type of gel called topological gel having mobile cross-links can be obtained by using polyrotaxanes as gel components. In the present study, polyrotaxane gels with inverse opal structures were prepared by templating a colloidal crystal of silica. The preparative conditions such as selection of crosslinking reagent, temperature, solvent are investigated in detail. As the consequence, polyrotaxane gels showing a structural color were obtained. The reflection wavelength was exactly correlated with the degree of swelling.

The gene transfection efficacies and cytotoxicity of various block catiomer polyplex micelles were evaluated by using three-dimensional multicellular tumor spheroid models. Poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polyaspartamide carrying 2-(2-aminoethyle) aminoethyl group as the side chain has demonstrated its high transfection efficiency and low toxicity. And this study also showed that a multicellular tumor spheroid model has a high potential as a novel evaluation system for the evaluation of polymeric gene vector.

We present a new program for predicting protein subcellular localization from amino acid sequence. WoLF PSORT is a major update to the PSORTII program, based on new sequence data and incorporating new features with a feature selection procedure. Following SWISS-PROT, we divided eukaryotes into three groups: fungi, plant, and animal. For the 2113 fungi proteins divided into 14 categories;we found that, combined with BLAST, WoLF PSORT yields a cross-validated accuracy of 83%, eliminating about1/3 of the errors made when using BLAST alone. For 12771 animal proteins a combined accuracy of 95.6% is obtained, eliminating 1/4 of BLAST alone errors, and for 2333 plant proteins the accuracy can be improved to 86% from 84%.

A method to recognize human activities captured in video is proposed. The method classifies basic human body activities, such as walking, running, gymnastic exercises and others. Applying Burt-Adelson Pyramid approach, the system extracts useful features consisting of multi-resolutional optical flows. This paper also reports coarseness limit of spatial resolution of optical flow for activity recognition; optical flows of 8 sub-areas covering the human body area are minimum requirement for the recognition. Also, the experiment examines effective weighting of multi-resolutional feature components. These results on recognition of coarse video will be useful for designing surveillance camera system
