Memory of the natural environment corresponds to the complex alignments of objects and changes in their locations. We hypothesized that the neural dynamics of theta phase precession observed in the rat hippocampus should contribute to the memory of object-place associations because of its high selectivity in synaptic plasticity of an on-line process. Our computer experiments have demonstrated that object-place associations can be instantaneously stored in the hippocampus as a hierarchical associative network, where object-relocation is stored by rewiring its part in the network. It indicates an advantage of theta phase coding in the memory of the natural environment.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of circular flow modes in a ring array of Bose-Einstein condensates

We numerically investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a circular flow mode in a ring array of Bose-Einstein condensates, which consists of M identical Bose-Einstein condensates that couple to the nearest-neighbor sites by tunneling. Introducing a rotational potential in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a series of circular flow modes is resonantly excited. For the initial conditions with uniform density and one-round phase difference of 2πℓ(l=0,1,…,M−1), two circular flow modes are excited for each circulation-quantized number l. It is shown that these circular flow modes periodically appear in time in the presence of the rotational field and persistently survive with a constant shape even after the external potential is removed, the transitions between the circular flow modes with different quantized number l can be realized by applying the phase-imprinting optical pulses, and the rotational velocity of the circular flow mode can be continuously modulated by adiabatically tuning the scattering length in a magnetic field, i.e., by use of the Feshbach resonance.

Origin of metal-insulator transition temperature enhancement in La0.8Ba0.2MnO3 thin films as determined by structural analysis

The structure and electrical transport properties of La0.8Ba0.2MnO3+δ thin films prepared on SrTiO3 (100) substrates are studied in an effort to clarify the origin of the metal-insulator transition temperature enhancement observed in this system. The unit-cell symmetry of the film is transformed from rhombohedral to pseudotetragonal concomitant with a decrease in thickness. Thinner films possessing a tetragonal structure always yield higher transition temperatures than thicker films possessing a rhombohedral structure, and the temperature difference is larger than 30K. Investigation of the unit-cell volume shows that the metal-insulator transition temperature varied with the unit-cell symmetry transformation even when the oxygen content remains unchanged. We posit that the origin of the transition temperature enhancement of La0.8Ba0.2MnO3+δ is essentially structural, and that the variation in carrier concentration induced by the variation in oxygen content generates only a minor effect.

One target of a ubiquitous computing environment is to aid users in getting necessary information and services in a situation-dependent form. We proposed a location-and orientation-based information support system using the compact battery-less information terminal (CoBIT). The CoBIT is a small, low cost communication terminal that uses only energy from the information carrier and the user. We realized an example of CoBIT, which downloads sound information and uploads users' positions and orientations along with signs from users. We emphasize the importance of focusing on event space as a first step toward realizing ubiquitous information support. We propose the use of CoBIT as a common terminal. Thereby, service embedded interactive map supported by various types of sensors and displays proposed to enhance benefits of the CoBIT.

In situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) was used to examine the zinc-terminated ZnO(0001)-Zn surface in electrolyte solution. Atomically-flat terrace-step structures were consistently observed on the surface which was prepared by chemical etching in alkaline solutions. Steps observed on the surface were composed of bilayers with a step height of 0.26 nm. Atomic images obtained by in situ EC-STM revealed that the surface has a (1×1) structure with hexagonal lattice. Etching was observed to proceed at step edges.

Ordinary applications mainly use application-specific binary data and XML has been widely used to exchange, integrate and manage data. When we expand the scope of XML technologies to cover binary data, it becomes possible for the data to be shared by many areas beyond that of the original application. We propose a scheme to achieve XML views over binary data, which are produced dynamically and partially based on address calculation. A DOM API supporting updates and XPath query optimization scheme for the XML views are then possible prototype. This paper presents experimental results using the implementation.

We have previously reported that concanavalin A-immobilized polystyrene nanospheres (Con A-NS) could efficiently capture HIV-1 particles and that intranasal immunization with inactivated HIV-1-capturing nanospheres (HIV-NS) induced vaginal anti-HIV-1 IgA antibody response in mice. In this study, to evaluate the protective effect of immunization, each three macaques was intranasally immunized with Con A-NS or inactivated simian/human immunodeficiency virus KU-2- capturing nanospheres (SHIV-NS) and then intravaginally challenged with a pathogenic virus, SHIV KU-2. After a series of six immunizations, vaginal anti-HIV-1 gp120 IgA and IgG antibodies were detected in all SHIV-NS-immunized macaques. After intravaginal challenge, one of the three macaques in each of the Con A-NS- and SHIV-NS-immunized groups was infected. Plasma viral RNA load of infected macaque in SHIV-NS-immunized macaques was substantially less than that in unimmunized control macaque and reached below the detectable level. Thus, SHIV-NS-immunized macaques exhibited partial protection to vaginal challenges with SHIV KU-2. © 2004 IEEE.

Recently, DNA properties have been investigated to realize new functional biodevices. However, there are few reports on DNA nanopatterning to make bionanodevices. Therefore, we have attempted DNA nanopatterning by using a nanoimprint method. On a glass substrate coated with poly-L-lysine, which is known as a material for DNA immobilization by UV radiation, about 100 μl of a 1μg∕μl DNA solution was applied and was dried at 60 °C for an hour, and was irradiated by UV for 2 min. Further 4% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution was coated on the substrate. The substrate was imprinted at 100 °C and 6 MPa for 5 min, and a mold was applied with a SiO2 on Si substrate fabricated by electron-beam lithography and dry etching. Etching of the DNA substrate was done by reactive ion etching in O2 atmosphere. Finally, the PVA layer washed down by water, and the DNA nanopatterning was obtained.

Coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in multilayered high-Tc superconductor HgBa2Ca4Cu5Oy: Cu-NMR study

We report a coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in five-layered compound HgBa2Ca4Cu5Oy (Hg-1245) with Tc=108K, which is composed of two types of CuO2 planes in a unit cell; three inner planes (IP’s) and two outer planes (OP’s). The Cu-NMR study has revealed that the optimally doped OP undergoes a superconducting (SC) transition at Tc=108K, whereas the three underdoped IP’s do an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition below TN∼60K with the Cu moments of ∼(0.3–0.4)μB. Thus bulk superconductivity with a high value of Tc=108K and a static AF ordering at TN=60K are realized in the alternating AF and SC layers. The AF-spin polarization at the IP is found to induce the Cu moments of ∼0.02μB at the SC OP, which is the AF proximity effect into the SC OP.
