Sulfadiazine(SD)is a common antibiotic administered to treat bacterial infections in livestock,and its fate andmigration are greatly affected by dissolved organicmatter(DOM).The soil infiltration system[a typical low-impact development(LID)facility]can significantly alterDOMproperties during runoff pollution,thus affecting the complexation of ***,the binding characteristics of different DOM components and SD in the soil infiltration system were explored using spectroscopic techniques(excitation–emission matrices,parallel factor analysis,and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy).Combined with the weakening of DOM fluorescence intensity and 78.63%reduction in mean SD concentration following treatment,synchronous degradation may have *** binding sequence of SD and DOM fluorophores was further explored using two-dimensional correlation *** DOM showed greater sensitivity to SD and more binding sites than influent ***,hydrophobic protein-like substances exhibited higher log K_(M) values than other fluorescent components,indicating that protein-like components play significant roles in SD *** soil percolation system improved the complexation stability and binding sequence of fulvic-like ***,SD–DOM can be intercepted and degraded using LID facilities to reduce the risk of SD in aquatic environments.

Computer vision based visual inspection systems are gaining enormous importance for manufacturing quality control in recent years due to the advent of Convolutional neural networks (CNN) and transformer-based (vision) models. CNN based models attempt to extract global features by gradually increasing the receptive field, while long-range dependencies are ignored. Therefore, CNN recognizes objects based on the texture instead of the shape. Transformer models, on the other hand, enable modeling long range dependencies using self-attention mechanism. But learning ability of spatial information inside each patch is limited, which means it can disregard a significant spatial local pattern, such as texture. In this work, we propose to combine transformer-based and CNN-based models to take advantage of the strengths of both methods. To meet inference time constraints of real time defect classification tasks, we exploit knowledge distillation method (KD) using softened logits of ensemble model as supervision to train a lightweight CNN model (Resnet18). The study showed that the proposed vision transformer-based KD approach overcome the requirements of limited computational resources and can be deployed on low-power and resource limited devices. The experimental results also showed that proposed framework outperforms in terms of mean accuracy on the test datasets compared to stand-alone CNN methods. © 2022 IEEE.

In recent years, the local structural damages on forward structures of Container ships have been reported by accidents. During the initial design stage, global direct strength analyses are generally performed for evaluation of yield and buckling strength using net dimensions of primary structure of container ship. Generally, the seakeeping and stochastic analysis are performed for the target ship to calculate the linear external wave and dynamic loads based on 3D linear potential theory. However, this method calculates external loads only on the wetted surface of the ship and thus additional strength evaluation is required to ensure the safety of the forward part of the container ship located above the draught line. In this study, the strength analysis considering the max. bow pitching case and bow impact effect are performed to evaluate the primary structures of forward holds of a container ship in addition to traditional global strength analysis. The max. bow pitching analysis is based on nonlinear external wave loads and considers the maximum bow pitching acceleration condition, while bow impact analysis is based on rule-based patch loads. Both analyses are performed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and applying Korean Register classification rules. The strength is evaluated in terms of yield and buckling capacity. The analyses procedures are thoroughly analyzed and presented with applied examples. The insights of this study will be helpful for the safe design of a container ship. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Implanted neural probes can detect weak discharges of neurons in the brain by piercing soft brain tissue,thus as important tools for brain science research,as well as diagnosis and treatment of brain ***,the rigid neural probes,such as Utah arrays,Michigan probes,and metal microfilament electrodes,are mechanically unmatched with brain tissue and are prone to rejection and glial scarring after implantation,which leads to a significant degradation in the signal quality with the implantation *** recent years,flexible neural electrodes are rapidly developed with less damage to biological tissues,excellent biocompatibility,and mechanical compliance to alleviate *** them,the mechanical modeling is important for the optimization of the structure and the implantation *** this review,the theoretical calculation of the flexible neural probes is firstly summarized with the processes of buckling,insertion,and relative interaction with soft brain tissue for flexible probes from outside to ***,the corresponding mechanical simulation methods are organized considering multiple impact factors to realize minimally invasive ***,the technical difficulties and future trends of mechanical modeling are discussed for the next-generation flexible neural probes,which is critical to realize low-invasiveness and long-term coexistence in vivo.

Quercus wood was used for thermal energy production, and wood bottom ash (WDBA) was used as a medium for water purification and soil fertilizer in accordance with the recently proposed food-water-energy nexus concept. The wood contained a gross calorific value of 14.83 MJ kg−1, and the gas generated during thermal energy production has the advantage of not requiring a desulfurization unit due to its low sulfur content. Wood-fired boilers emit less CO2 and SOX than coal boilers. The WDBA had a Ca content of 66.0%, and Ca existed in the forms of CaCO3 and Ca(OH)2. WDBA absorbed P by reacting with Ca in the form of Ca5(PO4)3OH. Kinetic and isotherm models revealed that the results of the experimental work were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. The maximum P adsorption capacity of WDBA was 76.8 mg g−1, and 6.67 g L−1 of WDBA dose could completely remove P in water. The toxic units of WDBA tested using Daphnia magna were 6.1, and P adsorbed WDBA (P-WDBA) showed no toxicity. P-WDBA was used as an alternative P fertilizer for rice growth. P-WDBA application resulted in significantly greater rice growth in terms of all agronomic values compared to N and K treatments without P. This study proposed the utilization of WDBA, obtained from thermal energy production, to remove P from wastewater and replenish P in the soil for rice growth. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Vertical green systems (VGS) are expected to mitigate outdoor heat stress through a transpiration cooling effect. There is a lack of knowledge on how VGS influence outdoor thermal comfort, particularly focusing on energy flux. This study quantifies the outdoor cooling effects of VGS, and distinguishes the energy flux between them and outdoor urban spaces. In addition, we discuss their cooling efficiency. Outdoor experiments were conducted during the hot summer period on building facades in city. Our study on VGS focused on the measurement of climatic variables, surface temperatures of plant leaves (Fatsia japonica), net radiation, and estimating transpiration and evaporation. The surface temperature of VGS were up to 4.3 °C higher than those of high albedo walls, while the reflected radiations (short and long-wave radiation) were 120 w/m2 lower than albedo walls during the day. The mean radiant temperature (MRT) of VGS was 3.02 °C lower than the high albedo wall during daytime, except in the case of shaded areas (0.45 °C). We confirmed that the cooling efficiency of transpiration was 7.38 times more effective than evaporation from soil without plants. Therefore, VGS is efficient in terms of long-term heat reduction and can be an effective strategy to mitigate outdoor heat stress. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Indoor positioning is of great importance to the era of mobile computing. Currently, much attention has been paid to RSS-based location for that it can provide position information without additional equipment. However, this method suffers from many challenges: (1) fingerprint ambiguity;(2) labor-intensive of fingerprint collection;(3) low efficiency of fingerprint matching. To get over these drawbacks, we provide a collaborative WiFi fingerprinting indoor positioning method using near relation. The base idea of this method is that interpolation method is used to enrich sparse Wi-Fi fingerprint. Near relation boundary is provided and Wi-Fi fingerprints is constrained to this region to reduce fingerprint ambiguity, which also can improve the efficiency of fingerprint matching. Extensive experiments show that a positioning accuracy of 3.8m can be achieved with the near relation under 1m interpolation density. © 2020 Authors.

Herein, diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) nanocrystals (NCs) of Gd x TM 0.07 Zn 0.93−x O (TM=Co, Mn) with Gd concentrations of 3 at% and 6 at% and a fixed TM concentration of 7 at% were synthesized using sol-gel technique, and their multifunctional properties were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed a wurtzite hexagonal structure for all synthesized NCs with no detectable impurity peaks. Williamson–Hall (W–H) plots revealed a trend of decreasing crystallite size and increasing lattice strain with higher doping levels. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based morphological analysis showed irregularly shaped NCs with an average crystallite size of 32–40 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the 3 + oxidation state of Gd and 2 + states for Co/Mn, as well as the presence of oxygen defects. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) absorption spectroscopy indicated a reduction in the band gap for the doped samples. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra revealed the formation of defects and oxygen vacancies in the samples. Magnetic characterization demonstrated room-temperature ferromagnetic (RTFM) behavior in all doped NCs, which was further verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Combining with PL and XPS results, the observed ferromagnetism is attributed to interactions between dopant ions and trapped electrons, mediated by magnetic polarons. Dielectric measurements revealed an increase in both the dielectric constant and dielectric loss, suggesting enhanced dielectric polarization. The AC conductivity increased with frequency due to hopping charge carriers. These results show that oxygen vacancies created by Gd 3+ and Co 2+ /Mn 2+ co-doping in the host ZnO lattice have a significant impact on the multifunctional properties of ZnO nanocrystals.

The reuse of existing architectural solutions is a key enabler for the optimization of engineering of industrial production systems with respect to cost, time, and quality. In order to achieve systematic reuse of architectural solutions within the design process of specific systems, the standard “VDI 3695” determines the use of reference architectures as one possible option. Often, within the development of industrial production systems, individual aspects and specific requirements need to be regarded, which may not be fully represented by a reference architecture. In order to create specific system architectures based on reference architectures an approach is needed that considers a mix of existing and newly defined architecture content, which must be integrated in the process of designing system architectures. Therefore, within this paper, an approach for the creation of system architectures based on a reference architecture is presented, with the goal of supporting the engineering of such production systems.

Exploring the spatiotemporal patterns of the relationships between urban indicators and urban temperature is essential to improve the mitigation effectiveness when we intend to adjust built environment for moderating urban thermal environment. In this study, RS, GIS technology and statistical methods were involved to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of the impacts of urban buildings and vegetation on Air Temperature (AT). Building Density (BD) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are the indicators for urban buildings and vegetation respectively. The objectives of this study are: 1) to determine an appropriate scale for examining the building-AT relationships and vegetation-AT relationships;2) to explore the seasonal and daily characteristics of these relationships;and 3) to compare the effects of urban buildings and vegetation. The results show that, for both summer and winter, a scale of 200–250 m is optimal for examining building-AT relationships, and 960–1020 m is the desirable scale for studying vegetation-AT relationships. Based on the optimal scales, we find that for both buildings and vegetation, they only significantly impact night-time temperature in both summer and winter. For seasonal comparison, the building-AT relationships and vegetation-AT relationships are relatively stronger in summer than in winter, which are indicated by R-square of the regression results. When comparing the effects of urban building and vegetation, we find that increasing vegetation is more effective than reduce buildings to achieve the same air temperature reduction. Our findings are conducive to generating space-time targeted Urban Heat Island (UHI) mitigation strategies. © Authors 2019.
