Contrastive analysis of snow load value and influence factors among Chinese and foreign building load codes

Based on a review of recent building load codes, a comparative analysis of the values of snow load of the existing codes and the corresponding controlled factors were conducted in this paper in order to identify deficiencies for improvement. The comparative results show that the systematic frameworks of the codes in different countries are similar. They all adopts the ground snow loads (basic snow pressure) multiplied by a series of controlled factor coefficients for the roof snow loads, while the latter can be divided into three categories as basic one, drift one and slide one;different codes adopt different values of these three categories. Therefore, it is suggested that in the development of next generation of Chinese load code for the design of building structures, the basic and drift roof snow loads should be inherited and improved while the slide one should be ***, the corresponding controlled factors can be classified into two categories as the external environment and the building itself by summarizing different load codes. The controlled factors which have high influence but have not been considered in the Chinese code are then discussed based on the statistical weight of them in the foreign codes. As a result, the following factors are proposed in this paper to achieve the goal of systematic framework optimization of the snow load for the development of the next generation of the Chinese load code for the design of building structures: the rain-on-snow factor which considers the characteristics of rainfall and slope roofs, the exposure factor which considers the marco landform climate and meso building surrounding, the thermal factors which considers the building heated temperature and roof thermal resistance, and the material factor which considers the smoothness of roof. © 2019, Editorial Office of Journal of Building structures. Compared with traditional financing mode of construction, public-private-partnership (PPP) mode has the great opportunity that private enterprises develop rapidly and solved the shortcomings that the amount of infrastructure investment is large and governments lack funds. Thus PPP mode is being adapted extensively. The keys to successfully implement PPP mode are effectively identifying and analyzing risks in PPP projects, in order to achieve the risk management of PPP projects. The research is aimed to establish a risk analysis model of PPP projects combining the sensitive analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. Then it uses a real case "Shijiazhuang International Exhibition Center" to verify this model and proposes strategies to deal with the main risks. The result of this case study proved effectiveness of the proposed model, which can be used in further risk analysis of PPP projects. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The production and transportation capabilities of a precast concrete (PC) component supplier have great impact on the construction of a PC building project. In China, the production and transportation capabilities of different PC suppliers can vary greatly, which will influence contractors' selection of PC supply chain strategies. However, previous studies often considered the capabilities of PC suppliers to be ideal and failed to compare different PC supply chain strategies under different levels of suppliers capabilities. This study collects detailed data from a PC building project and uses discrete event simulation (DES) to compare different supply chain strategies under different production and transportation capability levels of PC suppliers. Construction duration, construction cost, and greenhouse gas emissions are selected as indicators to compare three different supply chain strategies: just-in-time, on-site storage, and off-site storage. The strengths and weaknesses of each strategy under different capabilities of PC suppliers are found. The results provides guidance for contractors in selecting supply chain strategies when considering PC suppliers' production and transportation capabilities. © 2019 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is an advanced generation of concrete having superior qualities than traditional types of concretes. However, fire may severely affect its quality and strength. In this paper mechanical properties of RPC containing polypropylene (PP) fibers were studied experimentally after exposure to high temperature. The quality of concrete was also assessed by non-destructive testing (NDTs) such as ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method and resonance frequency (RF) method. dynamic elastic modulus has been determined by available equation from NDTs measurements. The results show that an initial increase in strength was observed up to 300℃. However, a gradual decrease in strength occurred for temperature higher than 300℃. Constitutive relationships have been proposed for structural strength assessment through NDTs. © 2018 Czech Technical University in Prague. All rights reserved.

Swivel technique has been vividly recognized and generally adopted for the T-rigid frame bridge in practice, and this has been achieved by tensioning the prestressed stranding via the ball hinge at the centre of the rigid frame bridge. Although the technique has been adopted and used, very limited study has been devoted to the feasibility of synchronous swivel for double-swing synchronous swivel T-rigid frame bridges to date. This study aims at analysing the construction control of a synchronous swivel T-rigid frame bridge with the self-weight of 12,000 ton for each wing, and providing simplified procedures to determine the unbalanced weight and friction coefficient of the rotating bridge. This study will provide guidance for the future similar projects.

Second order hierarchical partial least squares regression-polynomial chaos expansion for global sensitivity and reliability analyses of high-dimensional models

To tackle the curse of dimensionality and multicollinearity problems of polynomial chaos expansion for analyzing global sensitivity and reliability of models with high stochastic dimensions, this paper proposes a novel non-intrusive algorithm called second order hierarchical partial least squares regression-polynomial chaos expansion. The first step of the innovative algorithm is to divide the polynomials into several groups according to their interaction degrees and nonlinearity degrees, which avoids large data sets and reflects the relationship between polynomial chaos expansion and high dimensional model representation. Then a hierarchical regression algorithm based on partial least squares regression is devised for extracting latent variables from each group at different variable levels. The optimal interaction degree and the corresponding nonlinearity degrees are automatically estimated with an improved cross validation scheme. Based on the relationship between variables at two adjacent levels, Sobol’ sensitivity indices can be obtained by a simple post-processing of expansion coefficients. Thus, the expansion is greatly simplified through retaining the important inputs, leading to accurate reliability analysis without requirements of additional model evaluations. Finally, finite element models with three different types of structures verified that the proposed method can greatly improve the computational efficiency compared with the ordinary least squares regression-based method. © 2019, CC BY-NC-SA.

During the long service period of the transmission tower, the severe environment, material aging and fatigue effects result in the damage accumulation and resistance fading of the transmission tower, which even lead to the structural failure. In this paper, a stochastic subspace-based damage detection algorithm combined with statistical model is proposed for the damage identification of transmission tower structures through processing and analysing its vibration signals. Based on the structural modal parameters identified from the structural vibration response, the nominal modal parameters are defined. Considering that the Hankel matrixes constructed by the system observability matrix and the system output covariance matrix have the same kernel space, the damage index sensitive to the modal parameters is constructed. In the manuscript, firstly, the damage index establishment method and process of the algorithm are presented; and then the vibration data of transmission tower structure simulation under different damage conditions are obtained through numerical simulations; finally, above data are analysed to obtain the damage identification results of transmission tower. The results show that the method proposed in this work can effectively identify the local damage of transmission tower structure.

Experimental research on the seismic performance of reinforced reactive powder concrete frame joints

To study the seismic behavior of frame joints made of reactive powder concrete with ultrahigh strength, toughness and durability, 4 reinforced reactive powder concrete beam-column joints were tested under cyclic loads simulated seismic load conditions. The failure patterns, seismic bearing capacity, hysteretic characteristics, ductility, energy dissipating, strength and rigidity degeneration of the reactive powder concrete frame joints were analyzed. The test results show that, the shear-cracking strength of the reactive powder concrete specimens is higher, and the development of surface crack exhibits the characteristics of multiple fine cracking and a little concrete spalling, and the specimens remain as an integral whole as the loading *** strength and rigidity degeneration rates are small. The deformation capacity and energy dissipation are well. When the failure is occurring, the shear deformation is the double of that under the peak load, and the averaging equivalent viscous damping coefficient of specimens is 0.137, which is higher than the equivalent viscous damping coefficient of normal and high-strength concrete joints. The use of reactive powder concrete can improve the seismic performances of frame joints, including the shear ductility, energy dissipation capacity and so on, and reduce the stirrup ratio in joint core, which is conducive to the construction. © 2018, Editorial Office of Journal of Vibration and Shock. Based on Web of Science and CNKI databases, this paper analyzes the current status of BIM research by using the method of bibliometrics. In order to screen all BIM-related articles, periodicals with search keywords as "Building Information Model" or "Building Information Modeling" or "BIM" are searched respectively in each database, and exported in EndNote and Refworks formats. Besides, VOSviewer, a document mapping software, is used to analyze the search results and make it visualized. Following the map of analysis for co-authors and keywords both at home and abroad, this paper systematically illustrated the well-known experts, hot areas, and research prospects in BIM research as well as the problems and shortcomings in the existing research. Through the analysis, it can be summarized that (1) BIM has gained increasing importance in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry;(2) The hot topic related to BIM research are focused on mobile and cloud computing, laser scan, virtual reality, and big data. This paper provides important guidance for BIM researchers to better learn about BIM research area. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The CFRP/GFRP composite bar is a multilayered cylindrical structure, in which the CFRP bar is embedded in the GFRP. It has some advantages over the single CFRP or GFRP composite bar, however delamination between the CFRP and GFRP may lead to a loss of composite action, resulting in reduction of stiffness and fatigue life of this composite bar. Due to the inaccessibility and invisibility of the interface between CFRP and GFRP, the interfacial performance monitoring using traditional measurement methods have been proved challenging. In this work, the guided ultrasonic wave based method is proposed to detect the delamination in CFRP/GFRP composite bar. Since the guided ultrasonic wave is generated using the circular piezoelectric wafer attached on the end plane of the bar, the shear lag transfer model is presented first for the piezoelectric wafer mounted on the surface of the composite bar. This model can explain the characteristics of the guided wave generated in the core CFRP and outer GFRP. Subsequently, the finite element analyses are implemented to demonstrate the characteristics of the guided wave propagating in CFRP/GFRP composite bar. Finally, a series of experiments are conducted on the real CFRP/GFRP composite bars, which include the pristine and the damaged ones. The guided wave signals obtained in the experiments are used to analyze the degree and location of the delamination. This study provides an appropriate approach for the long CFRP/GFRP composite bar. © APWSHM 2018. All rights reserved.
