For constructing a tri-dimensional model from range images, they must be registered, i.e., it must be put together into the same coordinate system. There are good algorithms available to perform this, but only after the range images have been brought into positions that are close to the true ones with respect to an arbitrarily chosen reference system. These initial estimates are often provided manually. This paper deals with a technique to compute them automatically. We present a way to determine parameter values that are necessary to control the control flow of a simplified mesh based crude registration, which is characterized by two novel features: drastic data reduction and an expressive shape descriptor.

Register transfer level power macro-modeling is a promising technique for accurate and efficient power estimation. This paper proposes an effective approach based on the table-based method of the RTL power macro-modeling. We propose the accurate table reference method which considers power library unevenness. The proposed method is applicable for various table-based estimation and outputs more proximal power value. The experimental results show the proposed methods reduces max error 46.48% in maximum for 8 benchmark circuits, comparing to conventional method. RMS (Root Mean Square) error is also improved 1.77% in maximum.

Supporting multimedia applications over wireless networks has become a very active research topic recently because video applications are prognosticated to receive high demand in future wireless networks, such as ad hoc networks. However, enabling video transmission over wireless ad hoc networks is more challenging than over other wireless networks due to the node mobility, interference and the absence of supporting infrastructure. This paper addresses the problem of video transmission over ad hoc networks. We propose to combine Multiple Description Coding (MDC) with multiple source transport (Multipoint-to-Point: MP2P) video transmission in order to maintain a smooth video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we perform comprehensive simulation and test bed experiment in order to show the effect of the proposed MP2P video transfer with MDC for two descriptions case on video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks. The results show that the proposed mechanism successfully improves the video transfer performance in terms of video packet reachability and throughput.

The chromatic-dispersion of an ultra-flattened optical fiber and the resonant-wavelength of a microring-filter were computed for several temperatures by using temperature-dependent Sellmeier coefficients in combination with efficient finite-element approaches. Both parameters exhibited linear-dependence with temperature. © 2008 Optical Society of America.

We propose a novel distributed retransmission control method for ad hoc networks. Since ad hoc networks are based on wireless communication to transmit data among terminals, radio interference or obstacles often cause link failures and packet loss. In conventional ad hoc routing protocols, a source terminal must discover and reconstruct a new transmission route when link failures or multiple packet losses are observed on the current route. Such route discovery schemes generally increase network traffic. Various retransmission control mechanisms and multipath routing protocols have been proposed to overcome this problem. In the conventional method, however, the terminal that retransmits the lost packets should be located in the neighborhood of the destination terminal. In other words, only the last hop on the route is retransmittable. Moreover, although multipath routing mechanisms can increase transmission success rate, the terminal overhead increases owing to transmission of extra data stream on the route. The proposed method cooperatively uses neighboring terminals of the route to enable retransmission from any terminal on the route. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated by computer simulation.

We present a crude registration algorithm for two partially overlapping range images acquired from a rigid object. Our proposal is characterized by two novel features: drastic data reduction and expressive shape descriptor. The data reduction is achieved on the basis of the observation that for crude alignments only the overall shape of image is of interest and the enhancement of the expression power of the shape descriptor is accomplished by integrating in it both local and global shape information. Experimental results show that our algorithm delivers good initial estimate to a fine registration program.

The primary factor causing the world to shrink in the 21st century is the Internet. While webenabled services enhance information sharing and facilitate collaboration, the proliferation of the Internet has also led to an erosion of respect for intellectual property. A key contributor to this erosion is the concept of Academic Fair Use. On the surface, Academic Fair Use would appear to be a means of protecting intellectual property. In reality, Fair Use policies can lead to an increase in less-than-ethical practices that are bred in academia and then transfer to the workplace. In this paper, we identify the problems associated with employing Academic Fair Use, and then share techniques that we use to help our students internalize ethical practices. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Two graphs GA and GB with the same number of nodes n and the same number of branches b are said to be isomorphic if these graphs have the same adjacency relations between nodes. We have got many graphs with the same maximum number of trees in the process of continuous branch additions. These graphs have same numbers of nodes n, branches b and trees t. We certified those graphs are isomorphic by a computer algorithm. This algorithm is based on permutations of nodes with the same degree in a sequence of node degrees. Examples of isomorphic graphs are presented in the process of adding branches one by one. If two graphs with same numbers of nodes n and branches b are isomorphic, these graphs have same numbers of trees. The further problem will be to prove the reverse condition. ©ISAROB 2007.

Semi-analytical models are used to simulate the response of periodic-field electro quasistatic dielectrometry sensors. Due to the periodic structure of the sensors it is possible to use Fourier series methods in combination with collocation point numerical techniques to generate accurate sensor simulations much more efficiently than with the more general finite-element methods. Previously, collocation-point models used to compute the response of periodic field dielectric sensors, also known as Interdigitated Electrode Dielectrometers (IDED), have ignored the contribution of the constant (zero-order) term in the Fourier series expansion of the physical quantities. This is justifiable if the top dielectric material layer under test is infinitely thick, with any top ground plane bounding the dielectric removed too far from the sensor to influence its response. This is the assumption generally made until now in the application of these models. In practice, however, it is impossible to eliminate the cumulative effect of objects at ground potential in the vicinity of the sensor, which in general manifests itself as a ground plane electrode positioned at some effective distance within the top dielectric layer (usually air). In order to eliminate this source of uncertainty in the measurements, we suggest that a grounded electrode be explicitly placed at the top of the dielectric layer in the experimental setup, and its presence be accounted for in the models. Furthermore, in many cases, such as measurements on ceramic thermal barrier coatings, a metal layer is already present behind the material under test. In this paper we present how the models must be modified to account for this ground plane, and what effect it has on the dependence of the sensor response on the material properties.
