Modern electric power systems with high levels of penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) often present frequency security problems. The lack of inertia due to the reduced number of synchronous generators in these systems, in combination with the usual inability of RES to provide frequency support, leads to system operators having to curtail RES or rely heavily on Under Frequency Load Shedding schemes to ensure frequency security. Fast Frequency Reserves (FFR) have been proposed as a solution to strengthen the frequency support of the system and alleviate security problems. FFR allows mitigating Rate of Change of Frequency, Nadir, and post-fault frequency steady-state problems after an event. In this paper, we present, analyze, implement and compare five FFR controllers to alleviate frequency security problems in low-inertia grids. The low-inertia, islanded, cyprus dynamic model is used to quantify the results and exhibit the impact on a real system.

Optimizing device-to-device (D2D) topologies is pivotal for enhancing the performance and efficiency of 6G networks. This paper introduces a novel approach for forming optimal subnet trees within the 6G networks using BDIx agents and advanced minimum-weight spanning tree (MWST/MST) algorithms augmented by graph neural networks (GNNs), and feedforward neural networks (FFNNs). Our solution aims to significantly boost network performance, particularly in highdemand scenarios such as urban areas, large-scale events, and remote locations. Our approach dynamically adapts to changing network conditions, user movements, and traffic patterns by minimizing the power consumption and maximizing the throughput. We implement various MWST algorithms, including Kruskal's, Prim's, and Boruvka's algorithms, and introduce a GNN model to predict edge weights combined with FFNNs to select parent nodes (called GNN-FFNN model), aiding in the construction of minimum-weight spanning trees (MWST). Additionally, a 'weighted distance' metric is proposed to analyze network performance comprehensively. The proposed AI/MLdriven solution integrates BDIx agents with MWST algorithms, focusing on optimizing subnets under gNodeB in 6G networks, enhancing data transmission efficiency, reducing latency, and increasing throughput. This research contributes to developing scalable and flexible network management solutions suitable for diverse configurations and architectures. © 2024 IEEE.

Opacity is a security and privacy property that guarantees predefined secret behavior of a cyber-physical system will not be inferred with certainty by a malicious entity. If a system is opacity-violating, extended insertion functions that insert fake symbols can be implemented to enforce opacity. By constricting the ways in which the fake symbols are inserted, this paper addresses opacity enforcement under the framework of finite state automata using extended insertion functions under event insertion constraints and limited insertion events constraints, i.e., only a limited number of symbols in a specified set can be inserted before and after an actual system output. The notion of (kb,ka)-EIC-enforceability is proposed to describe how to enforce opacity via extended insertion functions in the presence of both event insertion constraints and limited insertion events constraints. A necessary and sufficient condition to check (kb,ka)-EIC-enforceability is derived by constructing an appropriate verifier. © 2023 IEEE.

A holistic approach was utilized in this work to characterize perovskite mini-modules. Outdoor testing in combination with advanced optoelectronic techniques (spatially resolved Electroluminescence/Photoluminescence) were applied for the testing of the devices. In this way, investigation of the power output evolution of the devices in the field as well as study of their defects and shunts evolution will be performed. A considerable reduction of the power output was obtained from the devices exposed outdoors from the first days of testing. Moreover, reference modules of the same structure were kept indoors in dark storage and measured regularly with means of IV and spatially-resolved EL/PL for the study of their performance degradation under dark and controlled conditions indoors. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, an efficient resource allocation scheme-based nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) Timeslot switching (TS) for single-input-single-output (SISO) SWIPT systems-(ERAS-NETS) is presented. The energy saturation characteristic is considered in the EH model where point-to-point (P2P) single-input single-output (P2P-SISO) SWIPT system is studied. Harvesting energy is based on Timeslot switching (TS) aiming at optimizing the average data rate where the TS ratio is a binary value (0 or 1). Hence, the problem is a nonconvex optimization problem because of the binary factor of the TS ratio. The optimization problem is solved using the Lagrange dual theorem that states that the optimal values of the Primal (P) and Dual (D) linear problem are the same if either solution is a basic feasible solution. Accordingly, the derivation of the optimal solution helps receiver to switch either to EH or information decoding (ID) based on the SNR value. Hence, the receiver will switch to EH in the districts having medium values of SNR, otherwise, the receiver will switch to ID in districts having SNR less than 5 dB or more than 25 dB. Different network performance metrics were considered in evaluating the proposed ERAS-NETS scheme in comparison with traditional state-in-the-art TS resource allocation schemes such as transmission power, distance between source and destination, pathloss exponent, and minimum required harvested energy. Simulations showed that ERAS-NETS improves energy efficiency with respect to different transmission power by 20%, 10%, and 3 % for high SNR, medium SNR, and low SNR districts, respectively. Improvement with respect to average energy efficiency versus other system performance metrics has also been noted for the proposed scheme. © 2023 IEEE.

Our research demonstrates a discrete speech system that empowers those afflicted with speech impairments to convey ideas by internally articulating words without producing audible sound. This method harnesses the minimal movements involved in articulation, making it less arduous than conventional vocalization, especially for individuals facing communication challenges. Silent Speech Interfaces (SSIs) form the foundation of our research, enabling the decoding of neuromuscular signals associated with internal speech articulation to facilitate non-invasive and effective communication for individuals with speech impairments. This research entails the utilization of a multi-electrode configuration to capture subtle, low-voltage electrical signals positioned on the surface area of the subject's neck. These signals emerge as a consequence of neural activation within the speech articulator muscles, signifying the internal articulation of words within the oral cavity, accompanied by minimal physical movement. Subsequent to signal acquisition, a comprehensive analysis of the data is conducted using a biosensing board (Cyton), facilitated by the implementation of the OpenBCI GUI interface and visualization via Python plotting tools. © 2025 IEEE.

A distributed B+Tree indexing method for processing range queries over streaming data

A data stream exhibits as a massive unbounded sequence of data elements continuously generated at a high rate. Stream databases raise new challenges for query processing due to both the streaming nature of data which constantly changes over time and the wider range of queries submitted by the user when compared with the traditional databases. In this paper, we propose a system architecture which includes components for both distributed indexing of streaming data and distributed processing of range queries on streaming data. Instead of creating a large and centralized B+Tree index structure, we create a set of small B+Tree indexes in such a way that a B+Tree index can be created for every partition of streaming data. We also design a distributed range search algorithm which can be used by each individual machine inside a Spark cluster to independently process range queries on each partition of streaming data. By exploiting the proposed system architecture, the process of indexing of streaming data and the process of querying over streaming data can be performed in a distributed and parallel manner. By performing several experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed indexing method is scalable and efficient for processing range queries on streaming data compared to the existing centralized B+Tree indexing methods and therefore, it can be used for applications involving data streams with a large volume of data elements and a large number of range queries. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.

Reliability, efficiency and continuity of power energy supplied is an area which receives increasing attention as the main infrastructure of power transmission and distribution systems in many countries is ageing. Hot spot related cable failures and power interruptions have a big financial impact on the power provider. The operational parameters of a method to identify in real time hot spots on cables is investigated in this paper, which can result to timely fault prevention. This can be achieved through exploiting the optical sensing capabilities of the existing optical fibre on-grid network. The resulting parameters aim to be advantageous for the system as they increase accuracy and will enable the Remote, automated, continuous, and real time monitoring of the grid infrastructure integrity.
