In the evolving landscape of smart cities, optimizing energy consumption and enhancing cybersecurity in Internet of Things (IoT) networks are crucial. This study leverages LoRa (Long Range) technology, Bayesian Inference, and Extreme Learning Machines (ELMs) to advance cyber threat intelligence and energy efficiency in large-scale IoT deployments. The proposed algorithms address key challenges within LoRa networks by implementing a novel energy consumption model, kernel-based ELM fine-tuning, Bayesian parameter tuning, and data fusion. Through Bayesian Inference, our approach dynamically adjusts network parameters to optimize packet transmission and collision rates, ultimately reducing power consumption across smart city applications. The Kernel-ELM algorithm fine-tunes LoRa network applications by adapting kernel parameters to the unique demands of IoT environments. Additionally, our Anomaly Detection and Fusion Algorithm (ADFA) integrates data from multiple sources to detect potential cyber threats, enhancing network security. Experimental results validate these algorithms on various datasets, demonstrating improvements in both energy optimization and threat detection. Ultimately, this study provides actionable insights into the deployment of scalable, energy-efficient, and secure IoT networks for smart city infrastructure. © 2024 IEEE.

Automatic Grammar Error Correction (GEC) models identify and correct a wide range of grammatical errors. Various strategies have been proposed for GEC, with the Neural Machine Translation (NMT) approach being the most effective. However, NMT-based GEC models with encoder-decoder layers rely heavily on the highest layer, leading to potential inaccuracies. Additionally, during inference, exposure bias can cause the model to substitute previously targeted words with incorrect alternatives. Another challenge is data scarcity. This paper introduces a GEC model leveraging the seq-to-seq Transformer framework, specifically designed for low-resource languages like Arabic. We propose a method to generate noise in the text to create synthetic parallel data, addressing the data constraints. Inspired by Capsule Networks (CapsNet), we incorporate CapsNet in GEC to dynamically aggregate information from multiple layers. In order to mitigate exposure bias, we incorporated a bidirectional training approach and a regularization term using Kullback-Leibler divergence to align left-to-right and right-to-left models. Experiments on two benchmarks demonstrate that our model outperforms current Arabic GEC models, achieving the highest scores. A network with critical data streams, where the timing of incoming and outgoing data is a necessity, is called a deterministic network. These networks are mostly used in association with real-time systems that use periodic hard-real-time data which need to be scheduled. The algorithm proposed in this paper is focused on achieving the lowest possible latency within the specified network topology depending on the physical parameters of the network and the periodic requirements of the communicating nodes. The algorithm allows to add priorities to the data flow between nodes and also the option to specify if preemption is allowed within the network, since not all devices support it. The result is a schedule of hard-real-time data communication within a specified network topology where all requirements of communicating nodes are met if such a solution is possible. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

The fuzzy broad learning system (FBLS) has received increasing attention due to its ability to quickly train from broad learning systems (BLS) and interpretability with fuzzy inference. However, the randomness of BLS brings instability to the training performance of the model, so the hyperparameters of the model are crucial for its performance. Currently, many FBLS use grid search to determine hyperparameters. However, grid search brings longer search time and the parameters obtained have randomness, which may not necessarily be the optimal hyperparameters. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes a fuzzy broad learning system with automatic determination of hyperparameters (ADHFBLS). We construct a novel FBLS based on the interval type-2 fuzzy set and design an incremental learning algorithm for rules and enhancement nodes to support rapid model expansion. Meanwhile, a heuristic hyperparameter automatic optimization algorithm is designed to overcome the randomness and long optimization time of grid search. Experiments have shown that ADHFBLS has higher accuracy and shorter model tuning time compared to some state-of-the-art models based on FBLS. © 1993-2012 IEEE.

Lack of sufficient patient monitoring data patterns and scenarios are among the challenges for accurate traffic modeling and network performance optimization when considering IoT medical devices. This paper examines how health data-traffic models can be used to investigate the capability and proper configuration of Long-Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) for remotely monitoring patients in a hospital environment or at home. For the hospital environment, it is assumed that there are two types of patients at any given time i.e., patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) or surgical wards and those located in the general medical wards. The transmission times of the health data from patients in the ICU/Surgical wards and those in general wards are randomly distributed within one and four-hour periods, respectively. For personal health monitoring devices that people use at their homes, a two-state Markov chain is used to model the generated traffic pattern. Preliminary results indicate that LoRaWAN may be used to support a significant number of nodes with sufficient reliability in both scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Automated incidence reporting requires accurate and timely anomaly detection. This paper considers this in the context of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). BGP is crucial for Internet routing but is vulnerable to attacks due to a lack of widespread authentication. While rare, BGP disruptions can be highly detrimental to Internet performance and security. Detecting BGP anomalies helps network operators protect their networks and improve Internet reliability. In this work, we investigate and develop anomaly detection for BGP using Machine-Learning. We extract relevant features of BGP control plane messages from RIPE RIS and RouteViews public datasets. After extracting features, we employ various feature selection algorithms to extract the most relevant features and explore balancing the datasets. Finally, we explore detection latency, an important operating parameter for automated anomaly detection. The results show that BGP anomalies can be detected in the order of seven minutes when using real attack data and that the observation point for the BGP data has a significant effect on anomaly detection. © 2025 IEEE.

The security of IoT that is based on layered approaches has shortcomings such as the redundancy, inflexibility, and inefficiently of security solutions. There are many harmful attacks in IoT networks such as DoS and DDoS attacks, which can compromise the IoT architecture in all layers. Consequently, cross layer approach is proposed as an effective and practical security defending mechanism. Cross-layer distributed attack detection model (CLDAD) is proposed to enhance security solutions for IoT environments. CLDAD presents a general detection method of DDoS in sensing layer, network layer, and application layer. CLDAD is based on big data analytics techniques, which enable the detection process to be performed in a distributed way, so the model can detect DDoS attacks in any layer on-the-fly and the model support the scalability of the IoT environment. CLDAD is tested based on three datasets, namely artificial jamming attack dataset, BoT-IoT dataset, and BoT-IoT-based HTTP. Based on the achievements regarding the 2020 targets, the Renewable Energy Directive established a new, higher target for 2030, reflecting a significant increase of interest for renewable energy sources (RES). As a result, various new software simulation packages, featuring models of RES, have been developed and being used in academia as well as in industry for research, educational or training purposes. In this paper Wind turbine (WT) characteristics and wind speed data obtained from a commissioned wind farm in cyprus are used to implement a simulation model in two different software programs featuring RES simulation capabilities. Power System computer Aided Design (PSCAD) is used to investigate the electrical power output of a WT model, and KYAMOS software is used to investigate the modelling of the blades, the resulting primary torque and the resulting rotor rotational speed. The investigation result novelty is the establishment of the ability of the proposed, under development, software program to satisfy the three required characteristics. Therefore, Deviation from measured values of the turbine characteristics is observed for both programs, user interface and blade modelling, and the potential of integrating results of one software into the other is investigated. © 2023 IEEE.
