The objective of this work was the investigation of multiscale Amplitude Modulation - Frequency Modulation (AM-FM) analysis based on Difference of Gaussians (DoG) filterbanks representations in order to predict the risk of stroke by analysing carotid plaques ultrasound images of individuals with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. We computed the instantaneous amplitude, instantaneous phase and the magnitude of instantaneous frequency to extract histogram features on each plaque region. The Support Vectors Machine classifier was implemented to classify asymptomatic versus symptomatic plaques. A dataset of 100 carotid plaque images (50 asymptomatic and 50 symptomatic) were tested, and showed that the AM-FM features based on DoG filterbanks and simple histograms performed better than the traditional AM-FM features. Best results were obtained when an eight scale filterbank with a combination of scales was used reaching the accuracy of 75%. © 2023 IEEE.

The exploitation of sustainable distributed energy sources is associated with the energy resilience and power optimisation of power grids. This study divides the energy sector of urban areas into isolated and non-isolated topologies and attempts to review the application of microgrids within the two. In addition, it investigates methods to optimise power quality with the integration of multi-renewable generation to the system and discusses on the feasibility towards islanded operating microgrids. The proposed work is a result of a careful evaluation of the current literature on the topic. Consequently, the outcome of the given study is anticipated to facilitate future work on Microgrid implementation functioning in islanded mode. © 2023 IEEE.

Neural network implementations on FPGAs have received significant attention from the research community due to their superior performance in tasks such as computer vision and the need to perform them on edge devices. Most efforts have focused on architecture optimizations such as pruning and operations such as the multiplications and additions with less attention on the ANN activation function. In this paper a hardware implementation of an artificial neural network on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) is presented. A digital system architecture is designed with the purpose of reducing the delay of implementation and minimizing the LUTs in the FPGA. The designed architecture is described using Very High-Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL). The proposed method utilizes a known piecewise linear approximation of the sigmoid function, and additionally exploits properties of fixed-point binary number representation to efficiently reduce delay and the amount of LUTS required Compared with previously published implementations of the same function and FPGA technology, the proposed method is shown to achieve a reduction between 33% and 95% in LUTs with no reduction in accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

The evolution of 5G networks is driving advancements in data rates, latency reduction, and connectivity, with adaptive beamforming emerging as a core technology to enhance spectral efficiency. This study demonstrates how integrating beamforming with spatial filtering can effectively optimize signal quality in 5G MIMO networks. Through simulations, we show that our approach achieves significant improvements in Signal-To-Noise Ratio (SNR) by optimizing beam directions. Specifically, results indicate that optimal beamforming angles can yield SNR values as high as 78 dB, substantially outperforming lower SNRs observed at less favorable angles. These findings underscore the potential of combined beamforming and spatial filtering to enhance communication reliability and network performance, particularly in high-density settings. © 2024 IEEE.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) are used for space heating and cooling. They form a Renewable Energy System (RES), combined with Ground Heat Exchangers (GHEs) to extract or reject heat from/to the ground. GHEs come in various types such as vertical or horizontal. Compared to conventionalAir Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs), GSHPs, although having a higher installation cost, exhibit a higher coefficient of performance (COP). The aim of this paper is to address whether it is economically feasible to install a GSHP as an alternative to an ASHP. In addition, as the environmental impact of a system does not lie in a single aspect, e.g., the cost or COP, it is also useful to identify whether a GSHP system is indeed a sufficiently overall greener solution than an ASHP system. To this end, a case study of a residential building with nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) characteristics, for certain heating and cooling loads is considered in Mediterranean, Central and Northern Europe climate conditions. Using GLD software, a GSHP system is studied for a typical vertical U-tube GHE configuration to estimate the length of the boreholes and the COP of the systems. Then, an environmental impact analysis is presented for different GSHP systems in comparison to ASHP systems. The systems undergo a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), with the annual heating and cooling load as functional unit. The openLCA software is used with the ReCiPe method with a mid-point perspective. The Global Warming Potential impact category is studied. Finally, a cost analysis is presented for the GSHP systems in comparison to ASHP systems and the total energy savings is obtained per case. Hence, the cost breakeven point is estimated per case and is used to assess the viability of each system. The complexity of modern power systems makes predicting and mitigating cascading outages challenging. Quantifying their impact requires extensive simulations, which are computationally expensive and impractical for real-time applications. To address this issue, we introduce a novel methodology that integrates different machine learning regressors to create a stacking ensemble regressor along with a cascading failure model enabling rapid quantification of cascading-driven nodal load shedding through prediction. The effectiveness of the proposed model is evaluated using the R2 metric, with studies conducted on the IEEE 39-bus system. Additionally, the model is tested on the IEEE 24-bus Reliability Test System to demonstrate the effect of network reliability on cascading failures and its impact on model fitness. The outcomes of this study indicate that the proposed model fits better on the IEEE 39-bus system, achieving an R2 of 0.88. In contrast, on the IEEE 24-bus Reliability Test System, the R2 is 0.42;the reasons behind this discrepancy are examined and discussed. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents the development of proof of concept for a low-cost, real-time Cyber Physical System (CPS)/IoT that deals with observed excess braking issues in Formula Student (FS) race cars. The goal is to utilize telemetry aspects through a smart monitoring system under the FS low budget competition restrictions, with low-cost materials, open-source software, Long Range wireless communication (LoRa) and cloud services. The paper also introduces an algorithm for implementing an adaptive sampling rate based on the proximity of monitored parameters to warning levels to minimize unnecessary data transmission. The system prototype was tested under realistic driving conditions, obtaining useful preliminary data that can be used to guide both driving behavior and future vehicle design. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach can be useful for the race team in FS conditions and may be possible to expand it to other similar driving scenarios outside FS. © 2023 IEEE.

It is a widely accepted fact that state-sponsored Twitter accounts operated during the 2016 US presidential election, spreading millions of tweets with misinformation and inflammatory political content. Whether these social media campaigns of the so-called "troll" accounts were able to manipulate public opinion is still in question. Here, we quantify the influence of troll accounts on Twitter by analyzing 152.5 million tweets (by 9.9 million users) from that period. The data contain original tweets from 822 troll accounts identified as such by Twitter. We construct and analyze a very large interaction graph of 9.3 million nodes and 169.9 million edges using graph analysis techniques and a game-theoretic centrality measure. Then, we quantify the influence of all Twitter accounts on the overall information exchange as defined by the retweet cascades. We provide a global influence ranking of all Twitter accounts, and we find that one troll account appears in the top-100 and four in the top-1000. This, combined with other findings presented in this paper, constitute evidence that the driving force of virality and influence in the network came from regular users - users who have not been classified as trolls by Twitter. On the other hand, we find that, on average, troll accounts were tens of times more influential than regular users were. Moreover, 23% and 22% of regular accounts in the top-100 and top-1000, respectively, have now been suspended by Twitter. As modern power systems become more complex, identifying critical components for their reliable operation is becoming increasingly important, especially in dealing with widespread cascading outages from large-scale disturbances. In this context, this paper introduces a novel method for identifying critical components in terms of their contribution to cascading-induced demand not served (DNS), utilizing feature selection techniques integrated with a machine learning classifier model. While existing methods predominantly identify critical assets using DNS, they often overlook the effects of cascading failures. Furthermore, those that do consider cascading failures typically focus solely on line overloading. This work, therefore, introduces a machine learning-based methodology coupled with a cascading failure model, considering protection mechanisms like excitation limits, under/over frequency, and line overloading. Tested on the IEEE 24-bus system, the validation method exhibits strong sensitivity (80.35%-90.03%) and specificity (80.35%-94.10%). Additionally, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) is used for validation by comparing its results with the proposed method. © The Institution of engineering & technology 2024.

Nowadays, the IoT ecosystem is evolving rapidly, with multiple heterogeneous sources producing high volumes of data and processes transforming this data into meaningful or 'smart' information. These volumes of data, including IoT data, need to be stored in repositories that can host raw, unprocessed, relational and non-relational types of data, such as Data Lakes. Due to the weakness of metadata management, security & access control is one of the main challenges of Big Data storage architectures as Data Lakes can be replaced without oversight of the contents. Recently, the Blockchain technology has been introduced as an effective solution to build trust between different entities, where trust is either nonexistent or unproven, and to address security and privacy concerns. In this paper we introduce DLMetaChain, an extended Data Lake metadata mechanism that consists of data from heterogeneous data sources which interact with IoT data. The extended mechanism mainly focuses on developing an architecture to ensure that the data in the Data Lake is not modified or altered by taking into advantage the capabilities of the Blockchain. © 2022 IEEE.
