Standardising the representation of biomedical knowledge among all researchers is an insurmountable task, hindering the effectiveness of many computational methods. To facilitate harmonisation and interoperability despite this fundamental challenge, we propose to standardise the framework of knowledge graph creation instead. We implement this standardisation in BioCypher, a FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) framework to transparently build biomedical knowledge graphs while preserving provenances of the source data. Mapping the knowledge onto biomedical ontologies helps to balance the needs for harmonisation, human and machine readability, and ease of use and accessibility to nonspecialist researchers. We demonstrate the usefulness of this framework on a variety of use cases, from maintenance of task-specific knowledge stores, to interoperability between biomedical domains, to on-demand building of task-specific knowledge graphs for federated learning. The study of white matter (WM), grey matter (GM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) regions in the brain magnetic resonance (MR) images can be useful for determining different brain disorders, assisting brain surgery, post-surgical analysis, saliency detection and for studying regions of interest. In this paper, a novel hybrid region-based multiphase (four-phase) active contours method is proposed to partition a brain MR image into three distinct regions i.e., GM, WM and CSF. The proposed energy functional is formulated by combining local and global fitted images in a multiplicative fashion. Both fitted images are defined by integrating two-phase global and local intensity from Chan-Vese (CV) and local binary fitted (LBF) models, respectively. In this paper, a post processing (pixel correction) method is also devised which improves the accuracy of the segmented WM, GM and CSF regions in a brain MR image. Different thresholds are decided based on averages of all three regions. According to the computed thresholds, a binary value (0 or 1) is then assigned to each pixel. Experimental results using both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) brain MR images show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art both qualitatively and quantitatively. © 2018 The authors and IOS Press.

The previous studies of centrifuged reinforced concrete structures, aimed at the supports of contact lighting networks, poles of power transmission lines, columns of single-stage buildings and overpasses, piles-shells were studied. A number of experimental studies were carried out in the technology of binders, concretes and construction ceramics laboratory of Don State Technical university Academy of Construction and Architecture. An experimental laboratory unit-centrifuge TsSRL-1 with a DC motor with thyristor power units was developed and applied. It was noted that number of rotations is the most essential parameter to regulate the average density and, correspondingly, the wall thickness of the centrifuged product. It is confirmed that the final sealing of the walls by centrifugation happens when the maximum compressive pressure is applied on the walls complied with the rotation speed of the mold at the sealing number of the shape revolutions. The main parameters of centrifugation during this period are the sealing speed of the shape and the duration of centrifugation. The result of the experiments allowed finding the optimal ratio between sand and granite crushed stone, which ensures a minimum cement consumption for centrifuged concrete B40 and a minimum yield of cement to the slurry. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Microgrids composed of solemnly AC-coupled distributed energy resources can be found in many real-life applications while their control has not been researched nearly enough to address some fundamental challenges, the most important of which is overall system reliability and fault tolerance. This paper proposes a droop-based coordinated control scheme for microgrids with AC-coupled units, a method that enables distributed energy resources units to hot swap between current source and voltage source grid-supporting control modes for satisfying load demand and ensuring energy storage systems will constantly be able to form the grid during islanded operation. The proposed control scheme has been realised in MATLAB/Simulink simulation model of a small-scale microgrid of AC-coupled units that corresponds to a real testbed in Northern Greece. Preliminary simulation results, in islanded mode, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme regarding power-sharing accuracy among the resources and state-of-charge balancing among storage units.

This paper investigates a secure wireless-powered device-to-device (D2D) communication network in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, where a hybrid base station (BS) in a cellular network not only provides power wirelessly for the D2D transmitter to guarantee power efficiency for the D2D network, but also serves as a cooperative jammer to interfere with the eavesdroppers. The cellular and D2D networks can belong to different service providers, which means that the D2D transmitter would need to pay for the energy service released by the hybrid BS to guarantee secure D2D communication. In order to exploit the hierarchical interaction between the BS and the D2D transmitter, we first formulate a Stackelberg game based energy trading scheme, where the quadratic energy cost model is considered. Then, a nonenergy trading based Stackelberg game is investigated to study the reversed roles of the BS and the D2D users. For comparison, we also formulate and resolve the social welfare optimization problem. We derive the closed-form Stackelberg equilibriums of the formulated games and the optimal solutions for the social welfare optimization problem. Simulation results are provided to validate our proposed schemes to highlight the importance of energy trading interaction between cellular and D2D networks. © 2017 IEEE.

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a τ-lepton and a neutrino using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV is presented. The full run 2 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015–2018 is analyzed. The τ-lepton is reconstructed in its hadronic decay modes and the total transverse momentum carried out by neutrinos is inferred from the reconstructed missing transverse momentum. The search for new physics is performed on the transverse mass between the τ-lepton and the missing transverse momentum. No excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper exclusion limits are set on the W′→τν production cross section. Heavy W′ vector bosons with masses up to 5.0 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming that they have the same couplings as the Standard Model W boson. For nonuniversal couplings, W′ bosons are excluded for masses less than 3.5–5.0 TeV, depending on the model parameters. In addition, model-independent limits on the visible cross section times branching ratio are determined as a function of the lower threshold on the transverse mass of the τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum.

Modern AI and robotic systems are characterized by a high and ever-increasing level of autonomy. At the same time, their applications in fields such as autonomous driving, service robotics and digital personal assistants move closer to humans. From the combination of both developments emerges the field of AI ethics which recognizes that the actions of autonomous machines entail moral dimensions and tries to answer the question of how we can build moral machines. In this paper we argue for taking inspiration from Aristotelian virtue ethics by showing that it forms a suitable combination with modern AI due to its focus on learning from experience. We furthermore propose that imitation learning from moral exemplars, a central concept in virtue ethics, can solve the value alignment problem. Finally, we show that an intelligent system endowed with the virtues of temperance and friendship to humans would not pose a control problem as it would not have the desire for limitless self-improvement. Nonconvex relaxation based matrix regression for face recognition with structural noise and mixed noise

For face recognition, sparse coding based classification methods have demonstrated the inspiring attraction in dealing with the pixel-level based sparse or gaussian noise, and nuclear norm based matrix regression (NMR) methods have shown the robustness in handling with the image-level based structural noise (e.g., occlusions, illuminations). Such regression methods have two limitations: one is that both ignore the label information of training samples and the similarity relationship between the training samples and the testing ones, the other is that nuclear norm as the rank relaxation can make the obtained solution deviate from the original matrix since its over-relaxations to the larger singular values. To overcome both limitations, this paper presents nonconvex relaxation based matrix regression (NRMR) methods: one is called locality-constrained group sparsity regularized nonconvex matrix gamma norm regression model for the structural noise (NRMRS), and the other extends it to the locality-constrained group sparsity regularized matrix gamma and minimax concave plus (MCP) regression model for the mixed noise (NRMRM), i.e., structural noise plus sparse noise. Two variants of inexact augmented Lagrange multiplier (IALM) algorithms including nonconvex IALM (NC-IALM) and majorization–minization IALM (MM-IALM) are devised to solve the proposed models, respectively. Finally, experiments on Extended Yale B, AR and CUHKFS databases can show the superiority of our methods to face recognition with structural noise and mixed noise. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

The role of climate can be affected by plants. The weather can accelerate and multiply the existence of various plant pests and diseases, accelerate the growth and development of grass among plants, and encourage the emergence of infection and significant damage to plants. The elements of climate that affect the growth of plants are one of them is rainfall. In this paper, we performed the simulation using the non-parametric penalized spline (PSPLINE) method and studied the effect on rice production in Lampung. It can be concluded that the increasing fluctuation, frequency, and intensity of climate anomalies in the last decade caused by the ENSO phenomenon have an impact on changes in distribution patterns, intensity, and period of the wet season so that the start of the rainy season and the dry season becomes too late. As a result, there is a seasonal shift from normal average conditions that can ultimately have severe implications for food crops. In a nutshell penalized spline gives high accuracy with R 2 = 96.227% and MAPE = 1.62%. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Training deep neural networks requires an exorbitant amount of computation resources, including a heterogeneous mix of GPU and CPU devices. It is critical to place operations in a neural network on these devices in an optimal way, so that the training process can complete within the shortest amount of time. The state-of-the-art uses reinforcement learning to learn placement skills by repeatedly performing Monte-Carlo experiments. However, due to its equal treatment of placement samples, we argue that there remains ample room for significant improvements. In this paper, we propose a new joint learning algorithm, called Post, that integrates cross-entropy minimization and proximal policy optimization to achieve theoretically guaranteed optimal efficiency. In order to incorporate the cross-entropy method as a sampling technique, we propose to represent placements using discrete probability distributions, which allows us to estimate an optimal probability mass by maximal likelihood estimation, a powerful tool with the best possible efficiency. We have implemented Post in the Google Cloud platform, and our extensive experiments with several popular neural network training benchmarks have demonstrated clear evidence of superior performance: with the same amount of learning time, it leads to placements that have training times up to 63.7% shorter over the state-of-the-art.
