In modern agriculture, the capability to promptly detect and respond to specific events is crucial. This study centres on the transformative potential of TinyML for enhancing event detection in Smart Agriculture, particularly when integrated with LoRa-based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this work, we underscore the unique advantages of utilizing TinyML at the edge-bypassing the latency and overhead associated with cloud-centric models and ensuring immediate, on-site analytical insights. Employing LoRa WSNs as the backbone provides a seamless, low-power, and expansive data communication framework. Detailed experiments demonstrate TinyML's efficacy in accurately predicting agricultural events while reducing computational and energy consumption. In conclusion, the synergy between TinyML and LoRa WSNs offers a promising approach for fine-tuned, real-time event detection, aiming for sustainable and high-yield agricultural practices. © 2023 IEEE.

This study investigated the predictive ability of ten different machine learning (ML) models for diabetes using a dataset that was not evenly distributed. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of two oversampling and undersampling methods, namely the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and the Near-Miss algorithm. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques were employed to enhance the interpretability of the model's predictions. The results indicate that the extreme gradient boosting (XGB) model combined with SMOTE oversampling technique exhibited the highest accuracy and an F1-score of 99% and 1.00 respectively. Furthermore, the utilization of XAI methods increased the dependability of the model's decision-making process, rendering it more appropriate for clinical use. These results imply that integrating XAI with ML and oversampling techniques can enhance the early detection and management of diabetes, leading to better diagnosis and intervention. © 2023 IEEE.

In today's world, where digital threats are on the rise, one particularly concerning threat is the Mirai botnet. This malware is designed to infect and command a collection of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The use of Mirai attacks has intensified in recent times, thus threatening the smooth operation of numerous devices that are connected to a network. Such attacks carry adverse consequences that include interference with services or the leakage of confidential information. To fight this growing threat, smart and flexible detection techniques are required to counter the new methods cyber attackers use. The aim of this research is to develop a resilient defense against Mirai botnet attacks. The Long Short Term Memory term (LSTM) and XGBoost combined have the best performance of 97.7% accuracy score. With this combination, the aim is to strengthen our cyber defenses against sophisticated and dynamically operating Mirai botnets to further enhance the security of our digital world. © 2024

As World Health Organization reports show more than 1.3 million people die each year from traffic accidents and more than twenty to fifty million people are harmed by non-fatal accidents. Understanding and identifying the major factors of road traffic accidents can help the stakeholders to take appropriate measures to minimize the accidents. Support Vector Machine (SVM), J48, and Naïve Bayes (NB) classification techniques are implemented to build a model that predicts accident severities and to identify road traffic accident factors. As experimental findings showed weather conditions, number of lanes, road lighting conditions, and speed limit are the determinant factors that cause more accident severity. Finally, the classification and prediction performance of the models are compared using various performance evaluation techniques. J48 classifier has better classification performance than Support Vector Machine and Naïve Bayes classifiers. Naïve Bayes is the classifier that showed the lowest performance than others, but it has good performance in classifying fatal accident severities rather than serious and slight accident severities. © 2023 IEEE.

Stochastic bilevel optimization (SBO) has been integrated into many machine learning paradigms recently including hyperparameter optimization, meta learning, reinforcement learning, etc. Along with the wide range of applications, there have been abundant studies on concerning the computing behaviors of SBO. However, the generalization guarantees of SBO methods are far less understood from the lens of statistical learning theory. In this paper, we provide a systematical generalization analysis of the first-order gradient-based bilevel optimization methods. Firstly, we establish the quantitative connections between the on-average argument stability and the generalization gap of SBO methods. Then, we derive the upper bounds of on-average argument stability for single timescale stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and two timescale SGD, where three settings (nonconvex-nonconvex (NC-NC), convex-convex (C-C) and strongly-convex-strongly-convex (SC-SC)) are considered respectively. Experimental analysis validates our theoretical findings. Compared with the previous algorithmic stability analysis, our results do not require the re-initialization of the inner-level parameters before each iteration and are suited for more general objective functions. © 2024 International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence. The paper focuses on the problem of technical social engineering attacks that encompass the manipulation of individuals to reveal sensitive information, execute actions, or breach security systems. These exploits frequently capitalize on human psychology, trust, and a lack of vigilance to attain unauthorized entry to networks, systems, or data. In contrast to traditional social engineering tactics that center on psychological manipulation, technical social engineering attacks employ technological means and strategies to manipulate and beguile individuals. The paper presents an attempt to detect social engineering attacks. The approach utilized four machine learning algorithms (decision tree, random forest, K-nearest neighbor, and extreme gradient boosting). The analysis is centered on data collected from network hosts, which may serve as indicators of a potential social engineering attack. The empirical results demonstrated high detection accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper develops a methodology based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to disaggregate distinct baseline electricity, heating and cooling components from the daily total electricity consumption data of 68 houses in cyprus over the course of one year. The results show that the electricity data involves several principal components, with the two main ones accounting for 52.27% and 14.83% of the total variance, representing cooling and heating, respectively. The findings highlight the potential of using PCA for effective energy disaggregation, which could be extended to various building types and communities. By analyzing energy consumption patterns, targeted energy-saving and improved energy efficiency measures can be identified. Future research will compare PCA results with physics-driven building models, explore alternative disaggregation methods, and apply the methodology to broader datasets.
