Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). We thoroughly investigate the electromagnetic response of intelligent functional metasurfaces. We study two distinct designs operating at different frequency regimes, namely, a switch-fabric-based design for GHz frequencies and a graphene-based approach for THz band, and discuss the respective practical design considerations. The performance for tunable perfect absorption applications is assessed in both cases.

The paper proposes the architecture of distributed multilevel detection system of malicious software in local area networks. Its feature is the synthesis of its requirements of distribution, decentralization, multilevel. This allows you to use it autonomously. In addition, the feature of autonomous program modules of the system is the same organization, which allows the exchange of knowledge in the middle of the system, which, unlike the known systems, allows you to use the knowledge gained by separate parts of the system in other parts. The developed system allows to fill it with subsystems of detection of various types of malicious software in local area networks.

This study aims to determine the level of precision, recall, and accuracy of performance of local binary pattern histogram and image euclidean distance for face image recognition. This research uses local binary pattern histogram method for segmenting face image and euclidean distance image for face image recognition. The proposed method started with the process of converting pixel value into a binary value, which then the value is used as a decimal value and the histogram is calculated, for then saved in the database. The trained facial image histogram will be compared with the histogram of the test data using the euclidean distance image formula. The result of this research shows realtime test result get 0.699 recall value and 0.7 precision value.

Cloud computing is a suitable solution for professionals, companies, and institutions that need to have access to computational resources on demand. Clouds rely on proper management to provide such computational resources with adequate quality of service, which is established by Service Level Agreements (SLAs), to customers. In this context, cloud monitoring is a critical function to achieve such proper management. Cloud monitoring systems have to accomplish requirements to perform its functions properly, and currently, there are plenty of requirements which includes: timeliness, adaptability, comprehensiveness, and scalability. However, such requirements usually have mutual influence, which is positive or negative, among themselves, and it has prevented the development of complete cloud monitoring solutions. This paper presents a mathematical model to predict the mutual influence between timeliness and scalability, which is a step forward in cloud monitoring because it paves the way for the development of complete monitoring solutions. It complements our previous work that identified the monitoring parameters (e.g., frequency sampling, amount of monitoring data) that influence timeliness and scalability. Evaluations present the effectiveness of the mathematical model based on a comparison of the results provided by the mathematical model and the results obtained via simulation. © 2018 IEEE.

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment aτ. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb−1 of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μττ=1.03−0.05+0.06 assuming the standard model value for aτ. To measure aτ, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for aτ is −0.057

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36 nb−1 of p+Pb and 3.6 pb−1 of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with pTch>0.5 GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with pTjet>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, IpPb, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The IpPb values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with pTch>4 GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Results of a measurement of dimuon photoproduction in nonultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV are presented. The measurement uses ATLAS data from the 2015 and 2018 Pb+Pb data-taking periods at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 1.94nb−1. The γγ→μ+μ− pairs are identified via selections on pair momentum asymmetry and acoplanarity. Differential cross sections for dimuon production are measured in different centrality, average muon momentum, and pair rapidity intervals as functions of acoplanarity and k⊥, the transverse momentum kick of one muon relative to the other. Measurements are also made as a function of the rapidity separation of the muons and the angle of the muon pair relative to the second-order event plane to test whether magnetic fields generated in the quark-gluon plasma affect the measured muons. A prior observation of a centrality-dependent broadening of the acoplanarity distribution is confirmed. Furthermore, the improved precision of the measurement reveals a depletion in the number of pairs having small acoplanarity or k⊥ values in more central collisions. The acoplanarity distributions in a given centrality interval are observed to vary with the mean pT of the muons in the pair, but the k⊥ distributions do not. Comparisons with recent theoretical predictions are made. The predicted trends associated with effects of magnetic fields on the dimuons are not observed.

A search is presented for displaced production of Higgs bosons or Z bosons, originating from the decay of a neutral long-lived particle (LLP) and reconstructed in the decay modes H→γγ and Z→ee. The analysis uses the full Run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at an energy of s=13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. Exploiting the capabilities of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter to precisely measure the arrival times and trajectories of electromagnetic objects, the analysis searches for the signature of pairs of photons or electrons which arise from a common displaced vertex and which arrive after some delay at the calorimeter. The results are interpreted in a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model with pair-produced Higgsinos that decay to LLPs, and each LLP subsequently decays into either a Higgs boson or a Z boson. The final state includes at least two particles that escape direct detection, giving rise to missing transverse momentum. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation. The results are used to set upper limits on the cross section for Higgsino pair production, up to a χ˜10 mass of 369 (704) GeV for decays with 100% branching ratio of χ˜10 to Higgs (Z) bosons for a χ˜10 lifetime of 2 ns. A model-independent limit is also set on the production of pairs of photons or electrons with a significant delay in arrival at the calorimeter.
