A comparison of three differential evolution strategies in terms of early convergence with different population sizes

Differential Evolution (DE) is a popular population-based continuous optimization algorithm that generates new can-didate solutions by perturbing the existing ones, using scaled differences of randomly selected solutions in the population. While the number of generation increases, the differences between the solutions in the population decrease and the population tends to converge to a small hyper-volume within the search space. When these differences become too small, the evolutionary process becomes inefficient as no further improvements on the fitness value can be made - unless specific mechanisms for diversity preser-vation or restart are implemented. In this work, we present a set of preliminary results on measuring the population diversity during the DE process, to investigate how different DE strategies and population sizes can lead to early convergence. In particular, we compare two standard DE strategies, namely “DE/rand/1/bin” and “DE/rand/1/exp”, and a rotation-invariant strategy, “DE/current-to-random/1”, with populations of 10, 30, 50, 100, 200 solutions. Our results show, quite intuitively, that the lower is the population size, the higher is the chance of observing early convergence. Furthermore, the comparison of the different strategies shows that “DE/rand/1/exp” preserves the population diversity the most, whereas “DE/current-to-random/1” preserves diversity the least.

As computation migrates to the edge, energy efficiency is becoming even more critical in the design of electronic devices. Therefore, new applications for the Internet of Things pose a challenge for designers to find the optimal balance between performance and energy consumption. While Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRA) have been an alternative to provide the required acceleration, they are far from being the most energy-efficient, since their functional units may be underutilized by some applications. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to handle these CGRA resources, which leverages the variable usage of functional units due to the application program phases. By using our new approach and performing power-gating of under-utilized parts of the CGRA, we demonstrate that it is possible to achieve reductions of up to 52.3% in power dissipation and 75% in energy consumption.

This paper presents the colMOOC project perspective for integrating a conversational agent service in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to facilitate peer dialogue during chat-based activities. Furthermore, it provides high level system architecture to highlight key aspects of the technology infrastructure and the functionality of the software system. The rationale of the approach follows the tenets of several converging theoretical perspectives emphasizing the value of learners' dialogue and constructive argumentation as knowledge building processes during collaborative activities. The MOOC teacher (domain expert) is expected to play a key role by entering in the system conceptual links that guide the agent to make relevant questioning interventions. Thus, the agent tool is mediating group-teacher interactions in a MOOC environment aiming to increase the transactive quality of peer dialogue. The paper discusses also the 'Academically Productive Talk' model that provides the basis for the agent interventions and the major software components of the system, including the colMOOC Editor and the colMOOC Player. © 2018 IEEE.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sNN=5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72 nb−1 and 257 pb−1 of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. The large-radius jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm using a radius parameter of R=1.0, by reclustering anti-kt R=0.2 jets, and are measured over the transverse momentum (pT) kinematic range of 158

A search is presented for a heavy resonance Y decaying into a Standard Model Higgs boson H and a new particle X in a fully hadronic final state. The full Large Hadron Collider run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 is used and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The search targets the high Y-mass region, where the H and X have a significant Lorentz boost in the laboratory frame. A novel application of anomaly detection is used to define a general signal region, where events are selected solely because of their incompatibility with a learned background-only model. It is constructed using a jet-level tagger for signal-model-independent selection of the boosted X particle, representing the first application of fully unsupervised machine learning to an ATLAS analysis. Two additional signal regions are implemented to target a benchmark X decay into two quarks, covering topologies where the X is reconstructed as either a single large-radius jet or two small-radius jets. The analysis selects Higgs boson decays into bb¯, and a dedicated neural-network-based tagger provides sensitivity to the boosted heavy-flavor topology. No significant excess of data over the expected background is observed, and the results are presented as upper limits on the production cross section σ(pp→Y→XH→qq¯bb¯) for signals with mY between 1.5 and 6 TeV and mX between 65 and 3000 GeV.

Ancient scripts are not only multi oriented, but they also require enormous efforts to be recognized in real-time manner. This problem is typical for Single Layer Hierarchical Graph Neuron (SLHGN) to be solved. The SLHGN is already known that it implements a single cycle memorization and recall operation. The scheme also utilizes small response time that is insensitive to the increases in the number of stored patterns. In this improved approach, the architecture is not only suitable for scrutinizing incomplete patterns, it can also accommodate multi oriented patterns. As the result, the architecture is able to recognize patterns that are not at the same orientation. Such capability can contribute to recognize ancient scripts that are multi oriented, yet the same, patterns. Since SLHGN architecture still encompasses a lightweight in-network processing algorithm which does not require expensive floating point computations, it is suitable for such a real-time process.
