This paper presents a serious game-based system for dance notation training named LabanDance. The system tracks the full body motion via Microsoft Kinect of the user while performing the movement according to the dancing score. The system provides two training modes which a practice mode and an examination mode. The practice mode is designed for users with less knowledge in the notation where movement of a virtual instructor is displayed according to the score for a user to follow. The second mode is the examination mode where users must perform the body movement according to the displayed Labanotation symbols within the provided time frame. The experiment showed that users without knowledge of Labanotation can enjoy the game while learning the fundamental of the Labanotation. © 2017 IEEE.

The power produced from solar systems depends strongly on the prevailing weather conditions and more precisely on solar irradiance. Due to the dependence of such systems on the weather conditions the electricity injected into the grid is intermittent in nature with potentially negative impact on the grid operation. The quality and quantity of the electrical power produced from solar systems is directly related to the available solar irradiance and therefore any disturbances to the latter affect the produced power. In this paper, the characterisation and classification of the daily solar irradiance from 12 locations in mainland USA is presented based on 4 years of ground measurements. The K-POP method used evaluates the quantity and quality of solar irradiance for a day and as a consequence classifies the day based on these two indices. The statistical analysis of the results shows high correlation through the years for each station. This is a strong indication that the sky conditions are predictable and that with the utilisation of mechanisms, such as storage, spinning reserve, etc. solar systems can become a major contributor to the energy mix. Finally, this analysis provides better insight into the solar resource of a given location. © 2017 IEEE.

Technical debt management entails the quantification of principal and interest. In our previous work we had introduced a framework for calculating the Technical Debt Breaking Point (TD-BP), which is a point in time where the accumulated interest becomes larger than the principal; thus the debt of the company is no longer sustainable after this point in time. In this paper, we instantiate this framework and validate its ability to assess the breaking point of source code modules in an industrial setting. The results of the validation suggest that the calculated TD-BP is strongly correlated to experts' opinion on the sustainability of modules, and that it can accurately rank components, based on their maintenance difficulty.

Numerous astrophysical and cosmological observations are best explained by the existence of dark matter, a mass density which interacts only very weakly with visible, baryonic matter. Searching for the extremely weak signals produced by this dark matter strongly motivate the development of new, ultra-sensitive detector technologies. Paradigmatic advances in the control and readout of massive mechanical systems, in both the classical and quantum regimes, have enabled unprecedented levels of sensitivity. In this white paper, we outline recent ideas in the potential use of a range of solid-state mechanical sensing technologies to aid in the search for dark matter in a number of energy scales and with a variety of coupling mechanisms. This letter reports the observation of W(ℓν)γγ production in proton-proton collisions. This measurement uses the full Run 2 sample of events recorded at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb⁻¹. Events with a leptonically-decaying W boson and at least two photons are considered. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with an observed and expected significance of 5.6 standard deviations. The inclusive fiducial production cross section of W(eν)γγ and W(μν)γγ events is measured to be σ_fid=13.8±1.1(stat)+2.1−2.0(syst)±0.1(lumi) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. © 2023 The Author(s)

Measurements of the suppression and correlations of dijets is performed using 3µb−1 of Xe+Xe data at sNN=5.44 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Dijets with jets reconstructed using the R=0.4 anti-kt algorithm are measured differentially in jet pT over the range of 32 to 398 GeV and the centrality of the collisions. Significant dijet momentum imbalance is found in the most central Xe+Xe collisions, which decreases in more peripheral collisions. Results from the measurement of per-pair normalized and absolutely normalized dijet pT balance are compared with previous Pb+Pb measurements at sNN=5.02 TeV. The differences between the dijet suppression in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb are further quantified by the ratio of pair nuclear-modification factors. The results are found to be consistent with those measured in Pb+Pb data when compared in classes of the same event activity and when taking into account the difference between the center-of-mass energies of the initial parton scattering process in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions. These results should provide input for a better understanding of the role of energy density, system size, path length, and fluctuations in the parton energy loss.

Machine learning for forecasting mid price movement using limit order book data

Forecasting the movements of stock prices is one the most challenging problems in financial markets analysis. In this paper, we use Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for the prediction of future price movements using limit order book data. Two different sets of features are combined and evaluated: handcrafted features based on the raw order book data and features extracted by ML algorithms, resulting in feature vectors with highly variant dimensionalities. Three classifiers are evaluated using combinations of these sets of features on two different evaluation setups and three prediction scenarios. Even though the large scale and high frequency nature of the limit order book poses several challenges, the scope of the conducted experiments and the significance of the experimental results indicate that Machine Learning highly befits this task carving the path towards future research in this field. Proteins are macromolecules central to biological processes that display a dynamic and complex surface. They display multiple conformations differing by local (residue side-chain) or global (loop or domain) structural changes which can impact drastically their global and local shape. Since the structure of proteins is linked to their function and the disruption of their interactions can lead to a disease state, it is of major importance to characterize their shape. In the present work, we report the performance in enrichment of six shape-retrieval methods (3D-FusionNet, GSGW, HAPT, DEM, SIWKS and WKS) on a 2 267 protein structures dataset generated for this protein shape retrieval track of SHREC'18. © 2018 The Eurographics Association.

It initially outlines the overall approach adopted by five European Higher Education Institutes (HEI) towards the implementation of a number of Intellectual Outputs in the areas of informatics, Telecommunications and service/network Security, and presents the overall methodology/policy adopted for assessing the quality of the provided modules by external and internal advisory boards. In turn, the paper elaborates on the implementation of two Intensive Courses for assessing the educational/training content by real/actual audience, analyzes the evaluations results and describes the actions taken for enhancing the quality of the provided material, as well as NEREUS learning outcomes. The paper concludes by discussing the next steps within NEREUS and future work.
