Automatic system for stitching microscopic images using OpenPano

Analyzing pap smear images by manual reading through a microscope is a challenge for doctors especially in distinguishing epithelial cells from inflammatory cells. A computer-based application is required for cervical cancer screening and displaying the results of reading automatically pap smear images using a microscope. This study aims to develop a module for stitching microscopic images including pap smear images which are collected from a microscope. A module for automatically stitching pap smear images is an important component in pap smear images management system. There are three tasks in stitching several pap smear images which were implemented in this study. Those three tasks include 1) feature extraction with scale-invariant feature transform, 2) estimation of homography or affine transformation by random sample consensus and 3) optimization of connection between images with bundle adjustment and blending. We use OpenPano to implement those three tasks. The system has successfully stitched the pap smear images with the feature overlap among the images greater than 10%. The stitched pap smear image has good quality after smoothing using the vertical blending step. In addition, blurry pixels on in some spots disappeared after performing the stitching error. The image quality has been improved after the multiband blending using 16-band and 128-band which shows the significant improvement on the 128-band. The system is expected to assist doctors in pap smear image identification.

Rich dynamics and anticontrol of extinction in a prey-predator system

This paper reveals some new and rich dynamics of a two-dimensional prey-predator system and to anticontrol the extinction of one of the species. For a particular value of the bifurcation parameter, one of the system variable dynamics is going to extinct, while another remains chaotic. To prevent the extinction, a simple anticontrol algorithm is applied so that the system orbits can escape from the vanishing trap. As the bifurcation parameter increases, the system presents quasiperiodic, stable, chaotic and also hyperchaotic orbits. Some of the chaotic attractors are Kaplan-Yorke type, in the sense that the sum of its Lyapunov exponents is positive. Also, atypically for undriven discrete systems, it is numerically found that, for some small parameter ranges, the system seemingly presents strange nonchaotic attractors. It is shown both analytically and by numerical simulations that the original system and the anticontrolled system undergo several Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. Beside the classical numerical tools for analyzing chaotic systems, such as phase portraits, time series and power spectral density, the’0-1’ test is used to differentiate regular attractors from chaotic attractors. The recent surge in Deep Learning (DL) research of the past decade has successfully provided solutions to many difficult problems. The field of quantitative analysis has been slowly adapting the new methods to its problems, but due to problems such as the non-stationary nature of financial data, significant challenges must be overcome before DL is fully utilized. In this work a new method to construct stationary features, that allows DL models to be applied effectively, is proposed. These features are thoroughly tested on the task of predicting mid price movements of the Limit Order Book. Several DL models are evaluated, such as recurrent Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Finally a novel model that combines the ability of CNNs to extract useful features and the ability of LSTMs' to analyze time series, is proposed and evaluated. The combined model is able to outperform the individual LSTM and CNN models in the prediction horizons that are tested. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Technological developments have enabled the use of vehicle number plate recognition in various fields such as parking systems, e-toll payments, handling motor vehicle theft cases, traffic violations and so on. Vehicle number plate characteristics in each country have characteristics that are not the same. Each country has a standard numbering system in its writing method, colour, language and size of the license plate, so that to take the research standards for license plate numbers from other countries is not effective. Special research is needed in accordance with the format of the number plate used by the country, in this case Indonesia. This research applies simple method, morphological operations in detecting vehicle plates in Indonesia. Morphological results will be segmented to get the image of the plate character separately. The test results show that the method applied can provide a maximum accuracy of up to 100% on taking plate images with a distance of 1.5 meters.

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ*→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11 GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

We present an algorithm for synthesising a controller (supervisor) for a discrete event system (DES) based on the property-directed reachability (PDR) model checking algorithm. The discrete event systems framework is useful in both software, automation and manufacturing, as problems from those domains can be modelled as discrete supervisory control problems. As a formal framework, DES is also similar to domains for which the field of formal methods for computer science has developed techniques and tools. In this paper, we attempt to marry the two by adapting PDR to the problem of controller synthesis. The resulting algorithm takes as input a transition system with forbidden states and uncontrollable transitions, and synthesises a safe and minimally-restrictive controller, correct-by-design. We also present an implementation along with experimental results, showing that the algorithm has potential as a part of the solution to the greater effort of formal supervisory controller synthesis and verification. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

There is limited evidence supporting the feasibility of using omics and functional technologies to inform treatment decisions. Here we present results from a cohort of 116 melanoma patients in the prospective, multicentric observational Tumor Profiler (TuPro) precision oncology project. Nine independent technologies, mostly at single-cell level, were used to analyze 126 patient samples, generating up to 500 Gb of data per sample (40,000 potential markers) within 4 weeks. Among established and experimental markers, the molecular tumor board selected 54 to inform its treatment recommendations. In 75% of cases, TuPro-based data were judged to be useful in informing recommendations. Patients received either standard of care (SOC) treatments or highly individualized, polybiomarker-driven treatments (beyond SOC). The objective response rate in difficult-to-treat palliative, beyond SOC patients (n = 37) was 38%, with a disease control rate of 54%. Progression-free survival of patients with TuPro-informed therapy decisions was 6.04 months, (95% confidence interval, 3.75-12.06) and 5.35 months (95% confidence interval, 2.89-12.06) in ≥third therapy lines. A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon’s coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, αDϵ2, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in decays of standard model (SM) Higgs bosons is presented. The data sample consists of 137 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, recorded at the LHC in 2016–2018. A novel technique is employed to reconstruct decays of LLPs in the end cap muon detectors. The search is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decay modes and to masses as low as a few GeV. No excess of events above the SM background is observed. The most stringent limits to date on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to LLPs subsequently decaying to quarks and τ+τ− are found for proper decay lengths greater than 6, 20, and 40 m, for LLP masses of 7, 15, and 40 GeV, respectively.
