We introduce and analyse the problem of encoding classical information into different resources of a quantum state. More precisely, we consider a general class of communication scenarios characterised by encoding operations that commute with a unique resource destroying map and leave free states invariant. Our motivating example is given by encoding information into coherences of a quantum system with respect to a fixed basis (with unitaries diagonal in that basis as encodings and the decoherence channel as a resource destroying map), but the generality of the framework allows us to explore applications ranging from super-dense coding to thermodynamics. For any state, we find that the number of messages that can be encoded into it using such operations in a one-shot scenario is upper bounded in terms of the information spectrum relative entropy between the given state and its version with erased resources. Furthermore, if the resource destroying map is the twirling channel over some unitary group, we find matching one-shot lower bounds as well. In the asymptotic setting where we encode into many copies of the resource state, our bounds yield an operational interpretation of resource monotones such as the relative entropy of coherence and its corresponding relative entropy variance. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is a common and powerful tool to study heart function and diagnose several abnormal arrhythmias. While there have been remarkable improvements in cardiac arrhythmia classification methods, they still cannot offer acceptable performance in detecting different heart conditions, especially when dealing with imbalanced datasets. In this paper, we propose a solution to address this limitation of current classification approaches by developing an automatic heartbeat classification method using deep convolutional neural networks and sequence to sequence models. We evaluated the proposed method on the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, considering the intra-patient and inter-patient paradigms, and the AAMI EC57 standard. The evaluation results for both paradigms show that our method achieves the best performance in the literature (a positive predictive value of 96.46% and sensitivity of 100% for the category S, and a positive predictive value of 98.68% and sensitivity of 97.40% for the category F for the intra-patient scheme;a positive predictive value of 92.57% and sensitivity of 88.94% for the category S, and a positive predictive value of 99.50% and sensitivity of 99.94% for the category V for the inter-patient scheme.). This paper is the result of a collaboration between the university of Genoa and Middle East Technical university Northern cyprus Campus about the enhancement of a recommender system that supports academics to integrate social networking and Web 2.0 tools for language education. Starting from a survey about current usage of social media in education and language teaching, the paper describes the extension of the L-Max Ontology to support teachers in building learning activities using Twitter, in relation to specific competences to be developed, specific learning goals and contextual constraints. To test the extended version of the recommender we performed a mockup evaluation based on the L-Max Ontology. © 2017 ACM.

In this work, we attempt to ameliorate the impact of data sparsity in the context of session-based recommendation. Specifically, we seek to devise a machine learning mechanism capable of extracting subtle and complex underlying temporal dynamics in the observed session data, so as to inform the recommendation algorithm. To this end, we improve upon systems that utilize deep learning techniques with recurrently connected units;we do so by adopting concepts from the field of Bayesian statistics, namely variational inference. Our proposed approach consists in treating the network recurrent units as stochastic latent variables with a prior distribution imposed over them. On this basis, we proceed to infer corresponding posteriors;these can be used for prediction and recommendation generation, in a way that accounts for the uncertainty in the available sparse training data. To allow for our approach to easily scale to large real-world datasets, we perform inference under an approximate amortized variational inference (AVI) setup, whereby the learned posteriors are parameterized via (conventional) neural networks. We perform an extensive experimental evaluation of our approach using challenging benchmark datasets, and illustrate its superiority over existing state-of-the-art techniques. We give a polynomial-time algorithm to decide whether a connected bipartite graph admits a two-layer drawing in the plane such that a specified subset of pairs of disjoint edges cross. We consider the problem of deciding whether there exists such a drawing in which a specified subset of triples of pairwise crossing edges are concurrent. We give a necessary condition for the same and conjecture that it is sufficient. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

In this research we propose a new clustering scheme based on a combination of a well known stochastic, population-based Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and the k-means algorithm to select optimal reference nodes in a Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In the proposed scheme the process of grouping sensors into clusters reference nodes is based on a K-means clustering algorithm to divide the initial population and select the best position in the neighbourhood to exchange information between clusters. In cases when sensor nodes receive multiple synchronization messages from more than one reference node a weighted average method is used. In this paper we limit our research on a number of benchmark functions which are used to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with other important meta-heuristic algorithms to show its superiority. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of b quarks into b hadrons are measured using 36 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic tt¯ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary pp interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the b hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with p values varying from 5×10−4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from e+e− collider experiments in which the b quarks originate from a color singlet Z/γ*.

Measurements of differential and double-differential cross sections of top-quark pair (tt¯) production are presented in the lepton+jets channels with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The analysis combines for the first time signatures of top quarks with low transverse momentum pT, where the top-quark decay products can be identified as separated jets and isolated leptons, and with high pT, where the decay products are collimated and overlap. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. The cross sections are presented at the parton and particle levels, where the latter minimizes extrapolations based on theoretical assumptions. Most of the measured differential cross sections are well described by standard model predictions with the exception of some double-differential distributions. The inclusive tt¯ production cross section is measured to be σtt¯=791±25 pb, which constitutes the most precise measurement in the lepton+jets channel to date.

The first observation of the electroweak (EW) production of a Z boson, a photon, and two forward jets (Zγjj) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. A data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016–2018 is used. The measured fiducial cross section for EW Zγjj is σEW=5.21±0.52(stat)±0.56(syst) fb=5.21±0.76 fb. Single-differential cross sections in photon, leading lepton, and leading jet transverse momenta, and double-differential cross sections in mjj and |Δηjj| are also measured. Exclusion limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are derived at 95% confidence level in terms of the effective field theory operators M0 to M5, M7, T0 to T2, and T5 to T9.

A flexible orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing op- tical network enables the bandwidth to be flexibly changed by changing the number of sub-carriers. We assume that users request to dynamically change the number of sub-carriers. Dynamic bandwidth changes allow the network resources to be used more efficiently but each change takes a signif- icant amount of time to complete. Service centric resource allocation must be considered in terms of the waiting time needed to change the number of sub-carriers. If the user demands drastically increase such as just after a disaster, the waiting time due to a chain-change of bandwidth becomes ex- cessive because disaster priority telephone services are time-critical. This paper proposes a Grouped-elastic spectrum allocation scheme to satisfy the tolerable waiting time of the service in an optical fiber link. Spectra are grouped to restrict a waiting time in the proposed scheme. In addition, the proposed scheme determines a bandwidth margin between neighbor spectra to spectra to prevent frequent reallocation by estimating real traffic behavior in each group. Numerical results show that the bandwidth requirements can be minimized while satisfying the waiting time constraints. Additionally measurement granularity and channel alignment are discussed. © 2017 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.
