Demand side management (DSM) and solar-plus-storage systems are enabling technologies that facilitate consumers to increase self-consumption (SC), while reducing electricity costs through efficient and intelligent electricity usage. Even though many demand response (DR) strategies have been presented for the residential sector, a major challenge remains the joint optimal utilization and synergies of DR and the battery systems flexibility scheduling. This paper explores how the optimization of DR and battery energy storage systems (BESS) scheduling can notably improve the net load profile of residential users. The obtained results indicate that the optimized DR model and battery storage effectively support load shifting and peak energy utilization. Specifically, the analysis suggests that the combination of DR and an 8kWh battery storage system increased the SC from 55.04% to 95.84% and the SS from 37.50% to 66.88%, compared to a baseline scenario (without battery storage and DR actions). Ultimately, the proposed optimization achieved a higher degree of energy autonomy for the yearly profile of a median household by minimizing the sum of absolute values of the net load with load shifting and BESS charging/discharging. Finally, the optimization model can be used by aggregators and system operators for scheduling and optimizing flexibility actions. © 2024 IEEE.

technology has influenced the hospitality industry, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a focus for sustainability, revenue growth, and problem-solving. This systematic review examined the opportunities and challenges of implementing IoT technology for a sustainable hospitality. Through a thorough analysis of 28 studies, we found that IoT technology has great potential to address sustainability issues in the hospitality industry. However, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed for the successful implementation of IoT technology in the hospitality industry. Overall, this study highlights the potential of IoT technology to revolutionize the hospitality industry and make it more sustainable. Further research is needed to address the challenges of IoT implementation in the hospitality industry and to evaluate the effectiveness of IoT technology in achieving sustainability goals. © 2023 IEEE.

We extend a recent model of temporal random hyperbolic graphs by allowing connections and disconnections to persist across network snapshots with different probabilities ω1 and ω2. This extension, while conceptually simple, poses analytical challenges involving the Appell F1 series. Despite these challenges, we are able to analyze key properties of the model, which include the distributions of contact and intercontact durations, as well as the expected time-aggregated degree. The incorporation of ω1 and ω2 enables more flexible tuning of the average contact and intercontact durations, and of the average time-aggregated degree, providing a finer control for exploring the effect of temporal network dynamics on dynamical processes. Overall, our results provide new insights into the analysis of temporal networks and contribute to a more general representation of real-world scenarios.

With the increasing availability of DC consumer appliances as well as the increasing penetration of direct current (DC) Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as photovoltaics (PV) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS), the concept of DC and hybrid AC-DC distribution systems and microgrids attract more and more attention. This paper presents the advantages of DC and hybrid AC-DC microgrids over the AC systems, based on the literature and proposes a methodology for identification of the optimal structure of a hybrid AC-DC microgrid and micro energy hub (mEH) to achieve high efficiency with lower losses and lower cost. In addition, a real test case was used as a case study in order to examine and validate the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is that the implementation of a hybrid AC-DC microgrid can bring a lot of benefits to consumers and system operators and play an important role in reducing losses and increasing the overall system performance in terms of energy efficiency and power quality. © 2023 IEEE.

Swarm of UAVs (S-UAVs) refers to an assembly of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) working together to accomplish prearranged missions. In emergency scenarios, such as a fire, any UAV is susceptible to damage. Among the routing algorithms that S-UAVs utilize the most frequently is clustering, where UAVs are divided into clusters. Each cluster consists of a cluster head (CH) and cluster members (CM). The selection of the CH is a topic of continuous research because of its crucial significance in inter-cluster communication. We propose a clustered weighted method with dynamic weight modification and redundancy to ensure end-to-end communication despite non-functional CH. Interspace, speed, and performance indicators are combined into a weighted metric that is used to select the CH, redundant CHs, and CMs. The suggested technique optimizes UAV role selection by dynamically and autonomously adjusting the weights. Based on the results of the executed simulation, this is a promising strategy that minimizes data loss in an emergency situation and minimizes delay. © 2024 IEEE.

Emotion recognition in text has become an essential research area within artificial intelligence and natural language processing due to its applications in sentiment analysis, human-computer interaction, and social media analysis. This paper introduces an approach for emotion recognition in social networks using transformer models enhanced with explainability techniques. By leveraging the advanced capabilities of transformers to analyze and classify emotions in written content, our finetuned models achieves high accuracy in identifying emotions according to the Ekman emotional model. The integration of LIME and SHAP provides transparency and interpretability to our model, making it more trustworthy for practical applications. Our findings indicate that models like XLNET report an exceptional performance in emotion recognition tasks. The explainability techniques illustrate the transformer model decision-making processes and the way that they utilize words and their continual information in sentences. © 2024 IEEE.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths worldwide along with detrimental socioeconomic consequences. Existing evidence suggests that the rate of indoor transmission is directly linked with the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) conditions. Most of the existing methodologies for virus transmissibility risk estimation are based on the well-known Wells-Riley equation and assume well-mixed, uniform conditions;so spatiotemporal variations within the indoor space are not captured. In this work, a novel fine-grained methodology for real-time virus transmission risk estimation is developed using a 3D model of a real office room with 31 occupants. CONTAM-CFD0 software is used to compute the airflow vectors and the resulting 3D CO2 concentration map (attributed to the exhalations from the occupants). Simulation results are also provided that demonstrate the efficacy of using CO2 sensors for estimating the infection risk in real-time in the 3D office environment. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. This paper presents the basics of non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and a system that could support the learning process in an e-learning environment. More specifically, we focus on the user's mental state and how this can be detected and captured using EEG in order to provide a positive user experience through appropriate adaptation. Mental state is a multidimensional term that includes among else relaxation and concentration, which, in this paper, are captured using a low-cost EEG device that the users wear throughout the interaction with the online environment. The accurate identification of these states is made with the aid of Machine Learning (ML) and enables notifications and proper adaptation to automatically match the detected mental state. Finally, the results from the user experience during the system usage are presented assuming 10 participants. The evaluation showed that such a system would provide a positive user experience. © 2023 IEEE.

Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) can contribute to airborne viruses remaining viable for longer time periods with the increased risk of infecting more people. Various methodologies, usually by considering CO2 concentrations and well-mixed zones, have been proposed for the indirect assessment of the virus transmission risk. However, IAQ conditions can vary significantly within a room and the position of sensors is crucial to ensure real-time estimation of the virus transmission risk. In this work, a novel sensor placement methodology is presented for the prompt identification of increased virus transmission risk conditions, through the early detection of increased CO2 concentrations in the exhaled air. Specifically, the 3D airflow vectors for multiple ventilation scenarios are used to compute the impact of each possible sensor placement, and the optimal sensor positions are computed using multi-objective optimization. Simulation results are provided for calculating the optimal positions for 1-3 CO2 sensors in a real office-room. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022.
