Increasing bus frequency to fulfill the performance requirements of dependable applications may increase the susceptibility of the system to transient faults. This paper describes an integration of protection against transient bus faults into the interface of the Hardisc RISC-V core. The protection is based on information redundancy with spatial redundancy features. It enables uninterrupted execution in the presence of transient faults and provides a hardware-software interface for its reporting. The benchmarking results indicate that most of the applications will be impacted minimally. The protection has a negligible impact on the maximal frequency and 8% area and power consumption overhead.

Autonomous drone racing competitions serve as a testing ground for enhancing the perceptual, planning, and control aspects of micro unmanned aerial vehicles (MAVs). This study thoroughly outlines the strategy, methodology, and technical development of a lightweight collision avoidance module for small drones, employed during our participation in the IMAV 2022 Nanocopter AI Challenge held at TU Delft, The Nether-lands. Tailored for nano-sized drones, this competition presented challenges related to agile maneuvers, obstacle avoidance, and navigation in a dynamic indoor arena. We provide detailed insights into our obstacle avoidance algorithm, employing an AI computer vision approach and showcasing its robust performance in dynamic environments. The accuracy of the proposed strategy was verified through simulation testing, highlighting the effectiveness of our approach in a simulated Webots environment across diverse parameter settings. The shared insights aim to contribute significantly to the ongoing evolution of autonomous drone navigation. Meta-learning in Healthcare: A Survey

As a subset of machine learning, meta-learning, or learning to learn, aims at improving the model’s capabilities by employing prior knowledge and experience. A meta-learning paradigm can appropriately tackle the conventional challenges of traditional learning approaches, such as insufficient number of samples, domain shifts, and generalization. These unique characteristics position meta-learning as a suitable choice for developing influential solutions in various healthcare contexts, where the available data is often insufficient, and the data collection methodologies are different. This survey discusses meta-learning broad applications in the healthcare domain to provide insight into how and where it can address critical healthcare challenges. We first describe the theoretical foundations and pivotal methods of meta-learning. We then divide the employed meta-learning approaches in the healthcare domain into two main categories of multi/single-task learning and many/few-shot learning and survey the studies. Finally, we highlight the current challenges in meta-learning research, discuss the potential solutions, and provide future perspectives on meta-learning in healthcare. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Mission/safety-critical applications rely on the dependability of their semiconductor control systems. The lockstepping is state-of-the-art when it comes to their protection. This paper compares the dual/triple lockstep systems with the Hardisc, which features microarchitecture-level protection. For a fair comparison, each system is based on the same architecture and integrates protection against bit-flips in memory and transient faults in the bus. We analyse how individual structures of the system affect the vulnerability of a system to faults. Our fault injection methodology combines pre-synthesis simulation with synthesis data to scale the fault rate of the structures according to their size. The results show that the Hardisc can withstand fault rates orders of magnitude higher than the dual-core lockstep system while preserving the same area and power consumption. It comes with a 5% frequency penalty. The pipeline logic has the most significant impact on the vulnerability of the lockstep system. On the other hand, the ECC-protected register file constraints the maximum failure rate the Hardisc can withstand due to fault accumulation during specific program sections.

The primary objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the binary information on the presence or absence of gene expression can sufficiently capture the inherent heterogeneity within single-cell RNA se quencing (scRNA-seq) data. This hypothesis posits that even without detailed expression levels, valuable insights about cellular diversity can be obtained. Utilizing this method can be particularly advantageous when analyzing large datasets, a common scenario in the field of scRNA-seq. In this paper, we evaluate clustering performance and cluster separability of a variety of model-based algorithms and distance-based methods to an alyze both expression level data and threshold-encoded binarized data. We examined the performance of the Bernoulli-mixture model and Gaussian-mixture model. These were compared against traditional clustering techniques such as hierarchical clustering, K-means, and the Louvain algorithm on a range of scRNA-seq datasets. Our findings reveal that mixture models exhibit a lower dependence on the specific dataset compared to distance-based methods. Mixture models, particularly, demonstrate greater efficacy in accurately estimat ing the number of clusters present within the data. Among analyzed algorithms, the Bernoulli-mixture model stands out, outperforming distance-based approaches in several key aspects. Binary data, presence/absence of gene expression, seem to be indeed adequate to capture the heterogeneity of scRNA-seq data when clus tering with methods specifically designed for binary datasets. The implications of this finding are significant, as it opens up new possibilities for simplifying data analysis in scRNA-seq studies without compromising the accuracy of the results. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and technology Publications, Lda.

This manuscript presents the design of a polarization converter metasurface (MTS) where Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) methods were used, to enhance its bandwidth. The MTS is implemented with a periodic array of multi-layered cells with chiral geometry that supports asymmetric transmission. Any impingent x-polarized wave is transmitted as a y-polarized wave, and any incident y-polarized wave is effectively reflected. In order to increase the frequency range where the incident $\vert \mathbf{Ex} \vert$ field over the transmitted $\vert \mathbf{Ey} \vert$ field (Tyx) is higher than 90% and the associated Rxx which is the ratio of the incident $\vert \mathbf{Ex} \vert$ over the transmitted $\vert \mathbf{Ex} \vert$ is less than -10 dB, the Rxx plots vs frequency were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN). The trained ANN was used to optimize the cell's geometric dimensions to create a MTS response with more than 90% conversion rate (Tyx>90%), in the frequency range from 6.5 to 12.5 GHz, resulting in more than 60% fractional bandwidth.

HyperSurfaces (HSFs) consist of structurally reconfigurable metasurfaces whose electromagnetic properties can be changed via a software interface, using an embedded miniaturized network of controllers. With the HSF controllers, interconnected in an irregular, near-Manhattan geometry, we propose a robust, deterministic Fault-Tolerant (FT), deadlock-and livelock-free routing protocol where faults are contained in a set of disjointed rectangular regions called faulty blocks. The proposed FT protocol can support an unbounded number of faulty nodes as long as nodes outside the faulty blocks are connected. Simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed FT protocol under various faulty node distribution scenarios. © 2019 IEEE.

Network congestion due to excessive reverse power flow from distributed energy resources is one of the most pressing challenges for power system operators worldwide. There are several methods that can be used to alleviate congestion, however, most of them are either costly or currently not available to operators. RES curtailment strategies are frequently applied to reduce the reverse power flow and alleviate congestion issues. In this paper, we examine three such RES curtailment strategies and analyze their impact on RES penetration, frequency response, and available frequency containment reserves. The islanded electricity grid of cyprus is used to showcase the results and suggestions are derived based on the operator priorities.

Data breach is a serious issue as it leaks the personal information of more than billions of users and their privacy is compromised. More than 77% of organizations do not have a Cyber Security Incident Response plan. So, it is necessary to be informed of network security and ways to store and generate secured passwords. Having different and random passwords for ones digital accounts can exponentially increase the security of user's data. The goal of this project is to build a password manager which can securely store and encrypt passwords and other data. The multifactor authentication will provide increased security to validate the user into password management system. Multifactor authentication system includes physical security key and graphical password authentication. © 2023 IEEE.
