This paper focuses on the energy transition as a social transition and highlights the importance of understanding individual and collective behaviors, aspirations and perceptions regarding energy consumption. The conceptual framework of energy cultures serves as a basic tool for investigating energy behavior, facilitating a deeper understanding of the factors influencing energy consumption. The study, carried out within the ENERGEIA project, focuses on assessing energy culture and energy efficiency awareness in both private entities and public institutions in Romania. Using a comprehensive questionnaire tool, the research aims to uncover the main challenges and barriers faced by organizations in implementing energy efficiency measures. The paper presents a quantitative analysis of the survey data aiming to gather information about the energy culture of companies and public bodies to identify common opportunities for action to improve energy culture and awareness levels.

IEEE 802.11ax defines a new channel access scheme of OFDMA-based random access (UORA) for varying number of associated stations (STAs) to send their requests or data to the access point (AP) in a contention manner. This letter presents an analytical model to investigate the performance of UORA in transient condition under bursty arrivals with arbitrary distribution. The key performance metrics of access success probability;average access delay;cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the number of transmissions;and utilization of random access resource units (RA-RUs) were derived. Simulation results verified the accuracy of the proposed analytical model. © 2019 IEEE.

In this paper, we analyze the indirect source coding problem with side information at both the encoder and decoder, as well as only at the decoder. We first derive structural properties of the two rate distortion functions (RDFs) for general abstract spaces and identify conditions under which the RDFs coincide. For multivariate jointly Gaussian random variables with square-error fidelity, we establish structural properties of the optimal test channels, show that side information at both the encoder and decoder does not reduce compression, and provide water-filling solutions using parallel Gaussian channel realizations. This paper uses a novel realization theory approach to establish achievability of the converse coding theorem lower bounds of the two RDFs.

Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) is a fundamental technique for improving the efficiency of 5G wireless networks. At the base station, it calls for the use of numerous antennas—usually in the dozens or even hundreds. In addition to better coverage and less interference, this enables a large increase in the amount of data that can be delivered and received simultaneously. By enabling more precise signal transmission and reception, Massive MIMO can also result in significant energy savings. The use of optimization techniques can further improve the performance of 5G networks. The aim of this paper is to investigate a signal quality optimization technique for MIMO in which users are allocated to antennas according to different algorithms. For our research, the DeepMIMO simulator produced a dataset that sets up all necessary parameters. In our study, we examine different techniques for user allocation in 5G MIMO Networks. We conclude that transforming the problem of user allocation to a linear assignment problem in order to find the most efficient connection between the users and the base stations is one of the best ways to optimize user allocation.

PPG signal is a valuable resource for continuous heart rate monitoring;however, this signal suffers from artifact movements, which is particularly relevant during physical exercise and makes this biomedical signal difficult to use for heart rate detection during those activities. The purpose of this study was to develop learning models to determine heart rate using data from wearables (PPG and acceleration signals) and dealing with noise during physical exercise. Learning models based on CNNs and LSTMs were developed to predict the heart rate. The PPG signal was combined with data from accelerometers trying to overcome the noise movement on the PPG signal. Two datasets were used on this work: the 2015 IEEE Signal Processing Cup (SPC) dataset was used for training and testing, and another dataset was used for validation of the learning model (PPG-DaLiA dataset). The predictions obtained by the learning model represented a mean average error of 7.033±5.376 bpm for the SCP dataset, while a mean average error of 9.520±8.443 bpm for the validation set. The use of acceleration data increases the performance of the learning models on the prediction of the heart rate, showing the benefits of using this source of data to overcome the noise movement problem on the PPG signal. The combination of PPG signal with acceleration data could allow the learning models to use more information regarding the motion artifacts that affect the PPG and improve performance on the physiological event detections, which will largely spread the use of wearables on the healthcare applications for continuous monitor the physiological state allowing early and accurate detection of pathological events. © 2023 IEEE.

Online Vehicle Routing with Pickups and Deliveries under Time-Dependent Travel-Time Constraints

The Vehicle Routing Problem with pickups, deliveries and spatiotemporal service constraints (VRPPDSTC) is a quite challenging algorithmic problem that can be dealt with in either an offline or an online fashion. In this work, we focus on a generalization, called VRPPDSTCtd, in which the travel-time metric is time-dependent: the traversal-time per road segment (represented as a directed arc) is determined by some function of the departure-time from its tail towards its head. Time-dependence makes things much more complicated, even for the simpler problem of computing earliest-arrival-time paths which is a crucial subroutine to be solved (numerous times) by VRPPDSTCtd schedulers. We propose two online schedulers of requests to workers, one which is a time-dependent variant of the classical Plain-Insertion heuristic, and an extension of it trying to digest some sort of forecasts for future demands for service. We enrich these two online schedulers with two additional heuristics, one targeting for distance-balanced assignments of work loads to the workers and another that makes local-search-improvements to the produced solutions. We conduct a careful experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithms on a real-world instance, with or without these heuristics, and compare their quality with human-curated assignments provided by professional experts (human operators at actual pickup-and-delivery control centers), and also with feasible solutions constructed from a relaxed MILP formulation of VRPPDSTCtd, which is also introduced in this paper. Our findings are quite encouraging, demonstrating that the proposed algorithms produce solutions which (i) are significant improvements over the human-curated assignments, and (ii) have overall quality pretty close to that of the (extremely time-consuming) solutions provided by an exact solver for the MILP formulation. © 2024, CC BY.

Software project management plays an important role in producing high-quality software, and effort estimation can be considered as a backbone for successful project management. Size is a very significant attribute of software by being the only input to perform early effort estimation. Even though functional size measurement methods showed successful results in effort estimation of traditional data-centric architectures such as monoliths, they were not designed for today's architectures which are more service-based and decentralized such as microservices. In these new systems, the event concept is highly used specifically for communication among different services. By being motivated by this fact, in this study, we looked for more microservice-compatible ways of sizing microservices using events and developed a method accordingly. Then, we conducted an exploratory case study in an organization using agile methods and measured the size of 17 Product Backlog Items (PBIs) to assess how this proposed method can be useful in effort estimation in microservices. The implication from the case study is that despite performing a more accurate effort estimation using the proposed size measurement than COSMIC, we were unable to significantly outperform using the total number of events. However, our suggested approach demonstrated to us a different way to use software size in terms of events, namely, to determine the coupling complexity of the project. This finding can be beneficial specifically when evaluating the change requests. © 2023 IEEE.

The deployment of 5G networks has led to a significant increase in demand for high-speed data rates and improved overall network performance. HetNets are a promising solution for providing coverage and capacity enhancements for 5G networks. However, one of the key challenges in HetNets is the optimization of bandwidth allocation. Traditional resource allocation techniques are limited in their ability to provide efficient and effective solutions for 5G networks. To address this challenge, a novel technology called DUDe (Downlink/Uplink Decoupling) has been proposed. DUDe optimizes bandwidth allocation in HetNets by dynamically adjusting the allocation of network resources to user demand and network conditions. The motivation of this paper is to highlight the importance of DUDe technology in macro cell offloading in 5G HetNets. The paper evaluates the performance of DUDe in comparison to traditional resource allocation techniques and provides insights into the key factors that influence its effectiveness. Moreover, this paper presents a detailed analysis of simulations results and provides recommendations for future research. The findings of this study will be useful for network operators and researchers in developing more efficient and effective resource allocation strategies for 5G networks.
