This paper presents a comparative analysis of the application of Variational Autoencoders (VAE) and Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks (WGAN) for detecting anomalous images. The performance evaluation of the models is conducted using metrics such as AUC, Precision, Recall, and F1-Score. The results indicate that VAEs provide high Recall in anomaly detection but with low Precision, whereas WGANs demonstrate more balanced results with fewer false positives. Recommendations are proposed for selecting an appropriate model depending on the specific task requirements and the need to minimize false alarms or achieve high detection completeness. © 2024 IEEE.

Effective Image Representation using Double Colour Histogram for Content-Based Image Retrieval

Image representation is critical to the successful realisation of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems. The choice of features to represent the image affects retrieval performance. Nowadays, image databases are heterogeneous and different feature types can be used for appropriate descriptions. This paper proposes an image representation for CBIR that combines Stacked Colour Histogram (SCH) and Conventional Colour Histogram (CCH) to improve image retrieval precision. This presented technique is designed to capture the colour and texture information of the image. The colour properties of an image are represented by CCH and that of texture by SCH. The weighted similarity measure is used to estimate the proportion of similarity values in the retrieval task. The novel descriptor has been widely tested on four standard image datasets, namely Batik, Coil100, Corel10K and Outext. Batik, Coil100 and Outext are used to assess texture discrimination. Corel10K is used to assess the discrimination of heterogeneous images. Experimental results and comparisons with SCH, CMTH, MTH, TCM, CTM and NRFUCTM demonstrate that the proposed descriptor has superior retrieval performance. © 2021 Slovene Society Informatika. Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is becoming one of the most frequent degenerative and irreversible diseases in elderly people. Its early detection and diagnosis is also a difficult and time-intensive task. The recent advances in Machine Learning (ML) and computer Vision (CV) created new paths to automatically detect KOA in the early stages. Detecting and grading the severity of KOA requires a dedicated ML model. This paper proposes a Side-by-Side Additive Network (SSANet)-based model for detecting and grading the severity of KOA. Since KOA affects the knee joint space by narrowing the gap between the joints, we preprocess the X-ray images to detect the Region of Interest (ROI) before the training of the model. From experimental results, it is evidenced that the ROI selection is really improving the detection accuracy of the model. Unlike sequentially connected convolution layer-based deep learning models, the proposed SSANet is based on a parallel convolution layer to reduce the degradation of feature quality. Again, to enhance the edge feature maps, we apply an additive layer that couples the previous layers’ convolutional output. SSANet captures both high-level and low-level features to predict the KOA severity effectively. The presence of a smaller number of layers and fewer numbers of learnable parameters than the existing popular deep learning models, make SSANet a time and space-efficient network. Moreover, the performance of the proposed SSANet in detecting KOA severity is significantly superior to that of other popular state-of-the-art networks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

This paper investigates the secure transmissions in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) communication network facilitated by a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS). In this network, the RIS acts as a relay, forwarding sensitive information to the legitimate receiver while preventing eavesdropping. We optimize the positions of the UAV at different time slots, which gives another degree to protect the privacy information. For the proposed network, a secrecy rate maximization problem is formulated. The non-convex problem is solved by optimizing the RIS's phase shifts and UAV trajectory. The RIS phase shift optimization problem is converted into a series of subproblems, and a non-linear fractional programming approach is conceived to solve it. Furthermore, the first-order taylor expansion is employed to transform the UAV trajectory optimization into convex function, and then we use the deep Q-network (DQN) method to obtain the UAV's trajectory. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme enhances the secrecy rate by 18.7% compared with the existing approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

Depressive symptoms are evident in how individuals behave in their day-to-day lives, yet these signs can easily go unnoticed and treatment can be avoided due to social stigma or lack of awareness. To enhance the accessibility and efficiency of identifying depressive symptoms, there have been proposals to utilize measurements from mobile devices and wearables. However, these proposals often consolidate their focus on a single feature or measurement. In this research paper, we present a pioneering methodology for detecting depressive symptoms through the collection and analysis of multimodal measurements reflecting daily activities, including location, sleep patterns, phone usage, and duration of phone calls. Our approach involves the development of a discreet mobile application, which gathers data from participants, including location, sleep patterns, phone usage, and duration of phone calls. Additionally, our research delves into the integration of chatbot technology to address early-stage depression assessment. In addition to acquiring data from test participants, we also employed a benchmark dataset, subjecting both datasets to analysis using several anomaly detection algorithms. Our findings revealed a negative correlation between the number of visited locations and the severity of depression while using the application, and a positive correlation with the results of the PHQ-9 questionnaires and chatbot use, indicating the potential of the chatbot as a reliable tool for preliminary assessment of depressive symptoms.

Data Augmentation (DA) is an effective strategy to increase model generalisation. In Natural Language Processing (NLP), DA remains in its early stages, primarily due to the inherent sensitivity of textual data, which complicates the augmentation process. These complexities are further increased in multilingual contexts, as DA techniques effective in one language may not yield comparable results in others. As a result, manually identifying optimal DA techniques that preserve semantic integrity and are language agnostic remains a significant challenge. It emphasises the necessity for automating the text DA process with Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which offers a promising approach by calculating word importance scores to effectively guide the augmentation. In this paper, a comprehensive review of existing approaches in auto-text DA is presented, beginning with an exploration of the concept of auto-text DA, followed by a discussion on its cross-lingual applications, and concluding with the integration of XAI for semantic preservation. The paper highlights the critical need for further research to enhance the effectiveness and applicability of XAI in auto-text DA, enabling its use across diverse languages.

A Multivocal Review of MLOps Practices, Challenges and Open Issues

With the increasing trend of Machine Learning (ML) enabled software applications, the paradigm of ML Operations (MLOps) has gained tremendous attention of researchers and practitioners. MLOps encompasses the practices and technologies for streamlining the resources and monitoring needs of operationalizing ML models. Software development practitioners need access to the detailed and easily understandable knowledge of MLOps workflows, practices, challenges and solutions to effectively and efficiently support the adoption of MLOps. Whilst the academic and industry literature on the MLOps has been growing rapidly, there have been relatively a few attempts at systematically synthesizing and analyzing the vast amount of existing literature of MLOps for improving ease of access and understanding. We conducted a Multivocal Literature Review (MLR) of 150 relevant academic studies and 48 gray literature to provide a comprehensive body of knowledge on MLOps. Through this MLR, we identified the emerging MLOps practices, adoption challenges and solutions related to various areas, including development and operation of complex pipelines, managing production at scale, managing artifacts, and ensuring quality, security, governance, and ethical aspects. We also report the socio-technical aspect of MLOps relating to diverse roles involved and collaboration practices across them through the MLOps lifecycle. We assert that this MLR provides valuable insights to researchers and practitioners seeking to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of MLOps. Secure Blockchain Integration Approach for Knowledge Discovery in Industrial Internet of Things

The field of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is now being duly recognized as a revolutionary area in industrial automation. With the budding interest of knowledge discovery that helps the businesses in applying technology on a large scale, researchers are now faced with several major security concerns. Blockchain integration is one of the suggested applications of technology that could help secure the data during transmission, storage, and knowledge discovery. Moreover, by integrating smart contracts, a secure architecture could also assimilate accountability during data exchange. Thus, we propose a four-layer security architecture that isolates IIoT devices from user-oriented layers and maintains a record of all IIoT devices registered in the organization to prevent malicious devices from corrupting the database and discovery process. Further, by choosing proof of authority (PoA), we ensure the fair functioning of the Blockchain nodes. Through proxy re-encryption for clients, PoA consensus for Blockchain nodes, and Whitelist-based access control for IIoT Devices, we ensure the legitimacy of all participating nodes. We also implement a prototype using a private Ethereum network with proof of authority consensus and present the time taken for the entire exchange and the gas (ethereum currency) consumed per exchange by the contracts. Also we implemented the secure knowledge discovery to understand the significance of the developed scheme. The results show that the exchange can be implemented in an IIoT environment and work with a reasonable amount of resource consumption.

Light field visualization commonly provides a single content over the entire field of view. However, the angularly-selective nature of the technology enables the simultaneous visualization of different contents at different viewing angles. Yet segmenting the valid viewing area comes with content interference as well in forms of separation zones, resulting invalid viewing domains. In this paper, we introduce a study on the separation zone of split-domain light field visualization. We created a static-content-based scenario in which we split the valid viewing area into two distinct domains, with a separation zone in between them. This was achieved by merging two light field contents in the middle with an instantaneous switch. The resulting visualization on a light field display was captured by a DSLR camera from two viewing distances, and it was compared to the crosstalk effect caused by insufficient angular resolution. © 2024 IEEE.
