This article describes the results of one of the ten pilot programmes under the Integrated Manufacturing and Service Systems (IMSS) initiative pursued by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore. The objective of this particular programme is to investigate how design, analysis, enhancement and implementation of critical business processes in a manufacturing and service network can be realised using one single simulation/application framework. The overall architecture of the framework outlines how commercial simulation packages and web-service based business process application components would have to be connected through a commercial application framework to achieve maximum leverage and re-usability of the applications involved. In the pilot phase of this programme, research issues were also addressed with regard to mechanisms for interoperation between commercial simulation packages, symbiotic interaction between simulation-based decision support components and physical systems, and simulation speed-up through multiobjective optimal computing budget allocation techniques on a grid infrastructure.

Optimization of due-date objectives in scheduling semiconductor batch manufacturing

This paper presents look-ahead batch scheduling for the real-time control of due-date objectives, such as average tardiness, maximum tardiness, and number of tardy jobs in batch processes. These due-date objectives play an important role in several production industries such as semiconductor manufacturing, aircraft industry, metalworking industry, etc. In look-ahead batching, the scheduling decisions are based on the arrival epochs and due-dates of incoming lots at each work station which are easily predictable in a computer integrated manufacturing environment. The steady state performance of the developed control strategy is compared to the steady state performance of the theoretically optimal control strategy (i.e. a Minimum Batch Size strategy). The experimental results indicate that the developed look-ahead batch scheduling strategy improves the performance of due-date objectives under wide conditions of arrival pattern, due-date distribution and traffic intensity. Time synchronization has always been a critical deciding factor of whether interoperating simulation models using the High Level Architecture (HLA) is achievable efficiently. In this paper, we propose a conservative time synchronization algorithm that makes use of the manufacturing process flow information (a sequence of steps production lots flow through) in the computation of the request time. This time is used by the simulation federate to issue requests to advance time to the HLA Runtime Infrastructure (RTI). The proposed algorithm monitors the simulation events that potentially trigger external times tamp messages at the exit step and j processing steps before this exit step as well as simulation events that extend the timestamp of external messages. We evaluated the performance of this algorithm using a Borderless Fab simulation model on the AutoSched AP. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs much better than a straightforward use of the RTI's time synchronization, and the further back we went in looking at the processing steps, the better the execution time that was achieved. © 2005 IEEE.

With the ever-increasing price erosion of wafers and the variation of product mix, we are faced with the challenge of increasing our capacity through productivity improvement and fab expansion. Our priority is to first optimize the efficiency of critical tools in order to minimize investment cost in expansion. In this study, we focused on the efficiency improvement for the wet benches through the adoption of an enhanced dispatching rule. The dispatching rule attempts to minimize efficiency loss. Using simulation, we observed that it improved the capacity by 8%. Our model managed to achieve an accuracy of at least 95%.

This paper presents a simulation based approach to improve on the mean cycle time performance of dispatching rules. The method applies recursive simulation technique on dispatching rules to search for new improved solutions for a set of job shop problems. due to the nature of the recursive heuristic, performance criteria other than mean cycle time and various dispatching rules can be implemented into the recursive simulation framework without requiring too much effort. The performance of the proposed approach is compared to the underlying dispatching rules as well as a published tabu search procedure. The preliminary results show that the approach outperforms the underlying dispatching rules and is comparable to the tabu search procedure.

In this paper, we present how a solution framework developed for (a special case of) the multi-objective simulation-optimization problems can be applied to evaluate and optimally select the non-dominated set of inventory policies for two case study problems. Based on the concept of Pareto optimality, the solution framework mainly includes how to evaluate the quality of the selected Pareto set by two types of errors, and how to allocate the simulation replications according to some asymptotic allocation rules. Given a fixed set of inventory policies for both case study problems, the proposed solution method is applied to allocate the simulation replications. Results show that the solution framework is efficient and robust in terms of the total number of simulation replications needed to find the nondominated Pareto set of inventory policies.

Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Simulation Packages (CSPs) are widely used to facilitate the creation of simulation models using some kind of visual interactive interface. CSPs have "evolved" over the years and are well used to support modeling demands in different market niches and domains. However, in terms of distributed simulation, there is almost a complete lack of support for interoperability. The advent of the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard makes it possible to connect distributed model components together. The model components can be developed using specific CSPs best suited to the application area. In this paper, a CSP Emulator (CSPE) is proposed to investigate the interfaces between the CSPs and the HLA Runtime Infrastructure. In addition to support for standalone models as provided by current CSPs, the CSPE has some new features needed for building distributed models. An evaluation is conducted between CSPE and Simul8, one of the popular CSPs.
