The recommendation and assignment of reviewers and articles is an emerging topic in the academic community and is known as the Reviewer Assignment Problem (RAP). This problem can be seen as a version of the well-known Generalized Assignment Problem (GAP), while the Conference Paper Assignment Problem (CPAP) is a specific case of RAP. The thesis proposal presented is centred on CPAP. The main objective of the doctoral thesis proposal is the development and validation of multi-information recommendation systems (extracting information from the content of articles and reviewers) capable of efficiently assigning expert reviewers to scientific articles submitted to a conference. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Knowledge engineering has become essential in the fields of Medical and Health Care with emphasis for helping citizens to improve their health and quality of life. This includes individual methods and techniques in health-related knowledge acquisition and representation and their application in the construction of intelligent systems capable of using the acquired information to improve the patients' health and/or quality of life. Haemato-oncological diseases can provide significant disability and suffering, with severe symptoms and psychological distress. They can create difficulties in fulfilling professional, family and social roles, affecting an individual's quality of life. Health related quality of life (HRQoL) is a subjective concept but there is also an objective component related to physiological indicators. Some of these physiological indicators can be easily assessed by wearable technology such heart rate variability (HRV). This paper introduces an intelligent system to assess, in real-time, potential HRV indices, that can predict HRQoL in lymphoma patients throughout chemotherapy treatment and to account the individuals' variability. The system is based on wearable technology and intelligent processing of the patients' biometric information to assess some quality of life related parameters. A longitudinal study was conducted among 16 lymphoma patients using this intelligent system. Mixed-effect regression models were performed to investigate predictors for and time effects on HRQoL. There were no significant changes in all HRQoL domains over time. Some quality of life domains revealed similar time trends as HRV indices. These HRV indices also have a significant effect on the domains of quality of life. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) have seen a steady increase in popularity in the last decades among urban users. By providing travellers with relevant information, these systems have the ability to considerably improve traffic flow, but are limited by their penetration rate among the city's population. In this work we put forward HERMES 1 , a tool to facilitate the evaluation of road networks through simulation with different ATIS and with different levels of information percolation among users. The usefulness of such a tool stems from the quantification of the extent to which an ATIS can improve total travel time and road utilisation by means of experimenting with simulation scenarios. This tool operates at a mesoscopic level, in which single users may be represented independently from each other, nonetheless are rather considered to operate at their macroscopic interactions with the network. We also illustrate example use cases for the tool on the motorway network between the Portuguese cities of Lisbon and Porto.

Pedestrian behaviour modelling and simulation play a fundamental role in reducing traffic risks and new policies implementation costs. However, representing human behaviour in this dynamic environment is not a trivial task and such models require an accurate representation of pedestrian behaviour. Virtual environments have been gaining notoriety as a behaviour elicitation tool, but it is still necessary to understand the validity of this technique in the context of pedestrian studies, as well as to create guidelines for its use. This work proposes a proper methodology for pedestrian behaviour elicitation using virtual reality environments in conjunction with surveys or questionnaires. The methodology focuses on gathering data about the subject, the context, and the action taken, as well as on analyzing the collected data to finally output a behavioural model. The resulting model can be used as a feedback signal to improve environment conditions for experiment iterations. A concrete implementation was built based on this methodology, serving as an example for future studies. A virtual reality traffic environment and two surveys were used as data sources for pedestrian crossing experiments. The subjects controlled a virtual avatar using an HTC Vive and were asked to traverse the distance between two points in a city. The data collected during the experiment was analyzed and used as input to a machine learning model capable of predicting pedestrian speed, taking into account their actions and perceptions. The proposed methodology allowed for the successful data gathering and its use to predict pedestrian behaviour with fairly acceptable accuracy.

When compared with their single-agent counterpart, multi-agent systems have an additional set of challenges for reinforcement learning algorithms, including increased complexity, non-stationary environments, credit assignment, partial observability, and achieving coordination. Deep reinforcement learning has been shown to achieve successful policies through implicit coordination, but does not handle partial-observability. This paper describes a deep reinforcement learning algorithm, based on multi-agent actor-critic, that simultaneously learns action policies for each agent, and communication protocols that compensate for partial-observability and help enforce coordination. We also research the effects of noisy communication, where messages can be late, lost, noisy, or jumbled, and how that affects the learned policies. We show how agents are able to learn both high-level policies and complex communication protocols for several different partially-observable environments. We also show how our proposal outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms that don't take advantage of communication, even with noisy communication channels.

In recent years, the artificial intelligence community has taken big strides in the application of reinforcement learning to games or similar environments using deep learning. From Atari to board games, including motor control or riddle solving, fairly generic deep learning algorithms can now achieve great policies by simply learning to play from experience, and minimal knowledge of the specific domain. However, these algorithms are very demanding in terms of time and hardware in order to achieve the results reported in the literature. So much so, that some algorithms would take years to achieve state-of-the-art performance in commodity hardware. Not only that, but even the learning environments can hinder the speed of the learning process, if they have not been performance optimized. In this paper, we evaluate a complex existing environment, and propose a performance-oriented version, which we call GeoFriends2. We describe the motivation behind the creation of our version, and how it is suitable for both single- and multi-agent reinforcement learning. We then use Asynchronous Deep Learning to create complex policies that can act as baselines for future research on this environment. We also describe a set of techniques that speed up the learning process such that tests can be run with commodity hardware in hours, and not weeks, and using much simpler network architectures.

Relevance is usually estimated by search engines using document content, disregarding the user behind the search and the characteristics of the task. In this work, we look at relevance as framed in a situational context, calling it situational relevance, and analyze if it is possible to predict it using documents, users and tasks characteristics. Using an existing dataset composed of health web documents, relevance judgments for information needs, user and task characteristics, we build a multivariate prediction model for situational relevance. Our model has an accuracy of 77.17%. Our findings provide insights into features that could improve the estimation of relevance by search engines, helping to conciliate the systemic and situational views of relevance. In a near future we will work on the automatic assessment of document, user and task characteristics.

The usage of multi-touch interfaces on a tabletop device, has been very explored for elder users in several domains. This interaction technique is an alternative to reducing the obstacles that older adults face in the use of computer systems, e.g., handling of peripherals. Many design guidelines are proposed in the literature for a wide range of products and systems for elders, e.g. websites, TV user interfaces. However, there is a lack of set of design guidelines and design recommendations of multi-touch interfaces that matches elder's needs. This paper presents a set of design guidelines and design recommendations distilled and extracted from most relevant works on design of multi-touch interfaces for elders available in the literature. The results are a set of design guidelines, useful for designers, application developers, usability specialists and researchers. Copyright © IARIA, 2014.

Small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are gaining the attention of researchers around the world, due to their versatility and performance in both indoor and outdoor applications. The whole project aims to specify and implement a symbiotic simulation platform to assist the design, development and testing of UAVs that use a quad-rotor configuration. Additionally, in this paper we firstly discuss the integration of two software components to build the simulation environment: Jason, an agent-oriented platform for the development and simulation of multi-agent systems and the jME3 game engine, used for 3-dimensional simulations of the models. Further, we describe the implementation of the physical multi-rotor system and present some preliminary results, as well as the description of the symbiotic simulation platform.

The dynamics of pedestrians have received less attention in transportation systems when compared to cars and other transportation means. However, its importance is inarguable and, recently, a lot of effort on research was put into this field. The use of Agent-Based Models (ABM) and known techniques such as the Social Forces Model (SFM) has fostered this most recent application field. Several models are already available for crowd simulation, but the validation of such models is a critical issue. Methodologies for behaviour elicitation and validation in social simulation models are needed. In this paper, a new framework to tackle these problems is proposed. Based on research made for more specific applications, concerned with buildings' evacuation, a methodological approach to develop a simulator for pedestrian's dynamics consisting of five main tasks is proposed hereafter. The tasks are: 1) "Reference Models and Benchmarks";2) "Pedestrian Sensor Fusion";3) "Serious Games for Pedestrian Behaviour Elicitation;" 4) "Behaviour Mining," and 5) "Agent-Based Modelling and Simulation of Pedestrian Elicitation of Emergent Dynamics," a Decision Support Tool aimed at the study and analysis at pedestrian dynamics in the urban context, specifically for helping planners to develop the new generation of buildings and cities.
