Nonlinear transmission lines -NLTLs are promising as a high-power RF source in radars, battlefield communication disruption, satellites, biomedical instrumentation, and other communication systems [1–2]. Another way to produce the RF signals on NLTL is using nonlinear components such as ceramic capacitors. In this work, we synthesized and characterized a barium zirconium titanate ceramic for use in nonlinear dielectrics. Its application is in NLTLs due to their high permittivity $> 5000$ in the phase temperature transition with low tangent loss $< 0.07$ . The electrical characterization investigated in this work is in temperature, frequency, and DC voltage sweep, which give the nonlinearity factor of ceramic, a key parameter to produce RF in NLTL, and the dielectric strength to know the breakdown voltage in the pulsed power systems.

Motivation: Bulk RNA-Seq is a widely used method for studying gene expression across a variety of contexts. The significance of RNA-Seq studies has grown with the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies. Computational methods have been developed for each stage of the identification of differentially expressed genes. Nevertheless, there are few studies exploring the association between different types of methods. In this study, we evaluated the impact of the association of methodologies in the results of differential expression analysis. By adopting two data sets with qPCR data (to gold-standard reference), seven methods were implemented and assessed in R packages (EBSeq, edgeR, DESeq2, limma, SAMseq, NOISeq, and Knowseq), which was performed and assessed separately and in association. The results were evaluated considering the adopted qPCR data. Results: Here, we introduce consexpressionR, an R package that automates differential expression analysis using consensus of at least seven methodologies, producing more assertive results with a significant reduction in false positives. DO-178C establishes considerations for developers, installers, and users to design software of embedded equipment in the aviation sector. Organizations must define processes and verify that they help to demonstrate that the DO-178C objectives are satisfied. We propose a test case generation method for process evaluation and improvement. The proposed method consists of an adaptation of the CoFI (Conformance and Fault Injection) approach to generate test cases to processes. Test cases verify if the deployed processes comply with their requirements. We applied the innovative approach to a corrective action process for safety-critical software reviews. The results show that the method is helpful to elicit and analyze unexpected behaviors. © 2020 IEEE.

Convolutional Neural Network for Respiratory Mechanics Estimation during Pressure Support Ventilation

In mechanically ventilated patients, some lung injuries can be reduced or avoided with therapy individualization, while the lung function is evaluated continuously, breath by breath. However, obtaining information on respiratory mechanics (respiratory system resistance and compliance) in the presence of respiratory effort is challenging, even if using invasive and complex procedures. The contribution of this work is to predict both respiratory system resistance and compliance over time using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and estimate the respiratory effort profile using the respiratory dynamics. Therefore, the approach used in this work was to generate a large amount of simulated data to feed a CNN so it could learn how to predict the correct values of the respiratory system resistance and compliance. Then, the respiratory effort was estimated by solving a first-order linear model. The main results showed a normalized mean squared error of 5.7% for the respiratory system resistance and 11.56% for compliance from Bland-Altman plots derived from the computational simulator. Finally, the method was validated using real data from an active lung simulator within which respiratory mechanics varied, and some ventilator settings were adjusted to mimic actual patient situations. The active lung simulator effort profile was obtained with a normalized mean squared error of 8.31% considering the use of an active lung simulator. The results have shown that the simulated data were valuable for the CNN training, while the performance over the real data suggested that the network was generalized accordingly for estimating respiratory parameters and effort profile.

According to recent studies, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) can play a game-changing part in terms of cost reduction and speed increase to address the last-mile delivery (LMD) problem and also to attend emergencies. Last-mile delivery services are getting more and more relevant, especially when in times where social distance is required. Given this scenario, our paper introduces a cyber-physical (CPS) system roadmap propose applicable for last-mile delivery drones. The proposed CPS guidelines are based on the concept of system of systems to enable an emerging behavior towards smart cities’ governance. The popular participation in Law-making is an important resource in the evolution of Democracy and Direct Legislation. The amount of legislative documents produced within the past decade has risen dramatically, making it difficult for law practitioners to attend to legislation and still listen to the opinion of the citizens. This work focuses on the use of topic models for summarizing and visualizing Brazilian comments about legislation (bills). In this paper, we provide a qualitative evaluation from a legal expert and compare it with the topics predicted by our model. For such, we designed a specific sentence embedding technique able to induce models for Portuguese texts, and we used these models as topic model, obtaining very good results. We experimentally compared our proposal with other techniques for multilingual sentence embeddings, evaluating them in three topical corpora prepared by us, two of them annotated by a specialist and the other automatically annotated by hashtags. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Open-ended assessments play a pivotal role in enabling instructors to evaluate student knowledge acquisition and provide constructive feedback. Integrating large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 in educational settings presents a transformative opportunity for assessment methodologies. However, existing literature on LLMs addressing open-ended questions lacks breadth, relying on limited data or overlooking question difficulty levels. This study evaluates GPT-4's proficiency in responding to open-ended questions spanning diverse topics and cognitive complexities in comparison to human responses. To facilitate this assessment, we generated a dataset of 738 open-ended questions across Biology, Earth sciences, and Physics and systematically categorized it based on Bloom's Taxonomy. Each question included eight human-generated responses and two from GPT-4. The outcomes indicate GPT-4's superior performance over humans, encompassing both native and non-native speakers, irrespective of gender. Nevertheless, this advantage was not sustained in ’remembering’ or ’creating’ questions aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy. These results highlight GPT-4's potential for underpinning advanced question-answering systems, its promising role in supporting non-native speakers, and its capacity to augment teacher assistance in assessments. However, limitations in nuanced argumentation and creativity underscore areas necessitating refinement in these models, guiding future research toward bolstering pedagogical support. © 2024 The Authors

Internet of things has made significant changes in the real world, penetrates all aspects of human life, and controls on many things. Agriculture plays a considerable role in the development of the agricultural countries. Securing agricultural data is also a challenging issue in the agricultural field. In this paper, we focus on securing agriculture data from hackers. Especially in the agriculture field, due to lack of manpower, farmers are going to remote control devices. So in the future, we need to ensure the security of the devices and the data about the land and control of the precious devices. To strengthen the security of an existing system, in this paper extension of AES 128-bit encryption method has been proposed with additional methods like checksum creation, data segmentation, and shuffling of data to give more security. In this paper, we compare encryption and decryption time and processing time for both with and without using proposed encryption method for securing agriculture data. In this system, we convert the raw data into JSON format, split the data, and also jumbled it. We claim that our method is more secure, reliable, and efficient compared to the existing method. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Effectiveness of Embedded Topology Controllers in a Multi-robot Network

This paper presents analysis and results for several experiments performed to verify the effectiveness of topology control algorithms running on a multiagent network (e-puck robots), in a multi-objective realistic hardware-based scenario. The main goal of such a network can be, for instance, disaster response, wildfire and environment monitoring, security tasks and also exploration and mapping (Scherer and Rinner, 2020). In doing so, the agents should be controlled in such a way that they have to ensure connectivity maintenance and robustness to failures while improving the coverage area. These issues were addressed by Ghedini et al. (2016, 2017, 2018), who proposed topology controllers regarding all these aspects and tested them successfully in a simulated scenario. However, it lacked the validation on a hardware-based domain, accomplished by this work. By running several experiments from different initial topologies, it was possible to analyze and verify the effectiveness of the developed topology controllers proposed in Ghedini et al. (2016, 2017, 2018). The hardware-based experiments shown results compatible with the simulated ones.
