In recent times, it was made a great investment in transfer from physical ancient Portuguese texts to digital support. This support transfer allows not only the access to the texts, bringing them to the public in general, but also the possibility of texts to be readable and processed by machines. NLP tools are addressed, mainly, to contemporary Portuguese and the application of NLP to classic texts has several difficulties. The elaboration of big lexical corpora of forms previous to modern Portuguese is an opportunity for multidisciplinary field of studies allowing the enlargement of linguistic studies and also the possibility of obtaining, by NLP, validated corpora, collections and ontologies, that can be input in NLP tools for ancient Portuguese texts. In this work we will present, briefly, the problem of lexical variation of forms in processing classic Portuguese texts, the challenges that emerge from them and future perspectives of work. This paper proposes an architecture approach for automated self-assembly of 3D structures by a team of actuated parts. In our approach, we consider that all parts are able to move by themselves and connect to each other during the execution of the assembly task. In order to deal with this problem, we present a high level framework and concept for coordinating the mobile agents. It enables the autonomous assembly of structures into arbitrary shapes. Furthermore, we also discuss the impact of the use of multiple agents in the planning of the construction task, control, and sensing of the robots. To validate the proposed architecture, we present the results from simulations using autonomous quadrotors as the building parts, assembled in bricklike patterns. © 2019 IEEE.

This research explores the use of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation as a reference signal for Initial Orbit Determination (IOD). By leveraging the unique properties of CMB, this study introduces a novel method for estimating spacecraft velocity and position with minimal reliance on pre-existing environmental data, offering significant advantages for space missions independent of Earth-specific conditions. Using Machine Learning (ML) regression models, this approach demonstrates the capability to determine velocity from CMB signals and subsequently determine the satellite’s position. The results indicate that CMB has the potential to enhance the autonomy and flexibility of spacecraft operations. © 2025, CC BY.

The term Model-Based Development and Verification is typically used to describe system development approaches, in which models are created and systematically transformed into concrete implementations. Many Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC) were created over the years. Although they define different strategies for executing software development, validation, and verification, it is observable that such models differ only in granularity and sequence of processes' executions. As RTCA DO-178C and DO-331 do not enforce a specific SDLC, the main contribution of this paper is to present how objectives and activities can be organized in four traditional Software Development Life Cycles (Waterfall, V, Spiral, and Incremental), when Model-Driven Design (MDD) is used. This paper provides a generic way to organize the SDLC, satisfying the RTCA DO-178C and DO-331 objectives for a Level A software. © 2018 IEEE.

Due to intrinsic complexity and uncertainty, decision problems require involvement of stakeholders with distinct backgrounds and points of view. Collaboration among stakeholders is then essential to identify the problem and find solutions. We propose a framework with guidelines to aid decision-makers, together with a facilitator, to structure and solve a problem collaboratively in a virtual environment. The framework points out how collaboration takes place during the whole decision process, including phases to structure the problem, to apply the multi-criteria decision analyses, and to explore the sensitivity analyses in order to reach the final result. We conducted an empirical evaluation, where decision makers reported benefits of the framework to engage stakeholders, to congregate ideas, and to reduce the duration of the decision process. Machine Learning (ML) has been widely applied to cybersecurity and is considered state-of-the-art for solving many of the open issues in that field. However, it is very difficult to evaluate how good the produced solutions are, since the challenges faced in security may not appear in other areas. One of these challenges is the concept drift, which increases the existing arms race between attackers and defenders: malicious actors can always create novel threats to overcome the defense solutions, which may not consider them in some approaches. Due to this, it is essential to know how to properly build and evaluate an ML-based security solution. In this paper, we identify, detail, and discuss the main challenges in the correct application of ML techniques to cybersecurity data. We evaluate how concept drift, evolution, delayed labels, and adversarial ML impact the existing solutions. Moreover, we address how issues related to data collection affect the quality of the results presented in the security literature, showing that new strategies are needed to improve current solutions. Finally, we present how existing solutions may fail under certain circumstances, and propose mitigations to them, presenting a novel checklist to help the development of future ML solutions for cybersecurity. Lead telluride is an important thermoelectric material due to its large Seebeck coefficient combined with its unusually low thermal conductivity that is related to the strong anharmonicity of phonons in this material. Here, we have studied the resonant and nonperturbative coupling of transverse optical phonons in lead telluride with cavity photons inside small-mode-volume metallic metasurface cavities that have photonic modes with terahertz frequencies. We observed a giant vacuum Rabi splitting on the order of the bare phonon and cavity frequencies. Through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy experiments, we systematically studied the vacuum Rabi splitting as a function of sample thickness, temperature, and cavity length. Under the strongest light–matter coupling conditions, the strength of coupling exceeded the bare phonon and cavity frequencies, putting the system into the deep-strong coupling regime. These results demonstrate that this uniquely tunable platform is promising for realizing and understanding predicted cavity-vacuum-induced ferroelectric instabilities and exploring applications of light–matter coupling in the ultrastrong and deep-strong coupling regimes in quantum technology. This paper aims to describe the agile development of an integrated system for accidents and crises management. This academic project prototype was developed at the Brazilian Aeronautics Institute of Technology, on the second Semester of 2015. The project has involved 80 undergraduate and graduate students at the same time from four different electronic and computer engineering courses. The Scrum Framework was combined with Problem-Based Learning (PBL), to develop a prototype within just 17 academic weeks. The prototype was developed as a Proof of Concept (PoC) and applied within a natural disaster scenario management, involving the four segments of: Civil Defense, Health Care, Fire Department, and Police Department. At the end of the project, it was possible to deliver an integrated academic system project prototype, associating a Control Room with Web Applications connected through Cockpit Display Systems (CDSs). Students were able to work geographically dispersed, using free cloud-based tools, and the Safety Critical Application Development Environment (SCADE), from®;ANSYS Esterel Technologies, combining multiple types of hardware like Raspberry Pi and Arduino, and different sets of open-source tools. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

This manuscript introduces a Matlab computational framework for a multiagent system simulation of financial markets. The main motivation of using Matlab is that this platform is very familiar among researches in the area of engineering. This could motivate that researchers to investigate this area. The aim of our platform is to replicate the interactions among agents through a double auction environment, leading to an artificial market. Every agent is assigned with unlimited credit, and short selling is allowed. These two degrees of freedom might ensure that a particular agent is able to trade whenever it becomes active. Agents should be able to take their own decisions. The key innovative aspect of this work is the development of a computational platform which integrates such heterogeneous financial agents. This framework intends to mimic behavioral patterns followed by the market practitioners. Even though the proposed framework uses a simplified version of the financial market, the time series resulted from the interactions of those agents reproduces some of the financial stylized facts. Therefore, at least some market dynamics are successfully emulated by the proposed approach. © 2019 IEEE.

Over the past decade, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance in many computer vision tasks. They can learn robust representations of image data by processing RGB pixels. Since image data are often stored in a compressed format, from which JPEG is the most widespread, a preliminary decoding process is demanded. Recently, the design of CNNs for processing JPEG compressed data has gained attention from the research community. They process DCT coefficients instead of RGB pixels, saving computation for decoding JPEG images, however, at the cost of increasing the computational complexity of the network. In this paper, we examine how spatial resolution and JPEG quality impacts on the performance of a state-of-the-art CNN designed to operate directly on the JPEG compressed domain. To alleviate its computational complexity, we propose a Frequency Band Selection (FBS) technique to select the most relevant DCT coefficients before feeding them to the network. Experiments were conducted on a subset of the ImageNet dataset considering both fine- and coarse-grained image classification tasks. Results show that such networks are resilient to JPEG quality but are susceptible to spatial resolution. Also, our FBS can reduce the computational complexity of the network while retaining a similar accuracy.
