Photonic technologies continue to drive the quest for new optical materials with unprecedented responses. A major frontier in this field is the exploration of nonlocal (spatially dispersive) materials, going beyond the local, wavevector-independent assumption traditionally made in optical material modeling. On one end, the growing interest in plasmonic, polaritonic and quantum materials has revealed naturally occurring nonlocalities, emphasizing the need for more accurate models to predict and design their optical responses. This has major implications also for topological, nonreciprocal, and time-varying systems based on these material platforms. Beyond natural materials, artificially structured materials—metamaterials and metasurfaces–can provide even stronger and engineered nonlocal effects, emerging from long-range interactions or multipolar effects. This is a rapidly expanding area in the field of photonic metamaterials, with open frontiers yet to be explored. In the case of metasurfaces, in particular, nonlocality engineering has become a powerful tool for designing strongly wavevector-dependent responses, enabling enhanced wavefront control, spatial compression, multifunctional devices, and wave-based computing. Furthermore, nonlocality and related concepts play a critical role in defining the ultimate limits of what is possible in optics, photonics, and wave physics. This Roadmap aims to survey the most exciting developments in nonlocal photonic materials, highlight new opportunities and open challenges, and chart new pathways that will drive this emerging field forward–toward new scientific discoveries and technological advancements. It is expected that managing process variations and organizing process domain knowledge in a reusable way can provide support to handle complexity in software process definition. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to describe a systematic software process reuse methodology, by combining process reuse techniques, such as Software Process Line and Component Based Process Definition, aiming to increase reuse possibilities. SPrL approach manages the variability aspect inherent to software process domain and CBPD focuses on modularizing the domain process information into process components. The proposed SPrL modelling metamodel and notation address reusable process elements, explicitly representing the variability concept in both process domain structure and behaviour. Based on the results of the evaluation studies, it was possible to get evidences of the approach feasibility, with a higher expressiveness when using the process variability notation proposed, which allow that more semantic concepts inherent to SPrL scenarios can be graphically described. Also, the set of heuristics to support mappings among artefacts in distinct abstraction levels was considered useful to keep the traceability of variability properties, relationships and restrictions. Further research is being conducted to explore ways to support project managers during the decision-making in new software process definitions. © 2018 by SCITEPRESS - science and Technology Publications, Lda.

This manuscript introduces a Matlab computational framework for a multiagent system simulation of financial markets. The main motivation of using Matlab is that this platform is very familiar among researches in the area of engineering. This could motivate that researchers to investigate this area. The aim of our platform is to replicate the interactions among agents through a double auction environment, leading to an artificial market. Every agent is assigned with unlimited credit, and short selling is allowed. These two degrees of freedom might ensure that a particular agent is able to trade whenever it becomes active. Agents should be able to take their own decisions. The key innovative aspect of this work is the development of a computational platform which integrates such heterogeneous financial agents. This framework intends to mimic behavioral patterns followed by the market practitioners. Even though the proposed framework uses a simplified version of the financial market, the time series resulted from the interactions of those agents reproduces some of the financial stylized facts. Therefore, at least some market dynamics are successfully emulated by the proposed approach.

Machine learning algorithms are in the fastest-growing fields of interest in recent years. In this work, a semi-supervised learning algorithm based on complex networks is adapted to exploit distributed processing of vertices. This is an algorithm based on the propagation of particles generated by labeled vertices to other edges of this complex network. Particles are absorbed at the edges and provide a dominance relationship between the vertices of the network and how the classes make up the problem. However, this algorithm is formulated by some sums that are performed throughout the database, which decreases the speed-up in parallel implementation due to underutilization. Our work focuses on stipulating an estimator of these values of this sum that decreases the need of the reduction. We demonstrate the formulation of the estimator and we show that the modification increases the classification performance of the original algorithm while increasing the parallelization potential of the algorithm.

This work intends to replicate the interactions among intelligent agents in a double auction environment, leading to an artificial market. Aiming at making agents able to take their own decisions, different methodologies for agents intelligence are proposed, ranging from zero intelligence agents to reinforcement learning. Regarding the study of financial markets, agents can rely on a myriad of techniques in their making-decision process. In this manuscript, the Fundamental and/or Technical Analysis are the tools used by the agents to take their own decisions. A different set of parameters is assigned to each agent, thereby heterogeneity is included within each strategy. Based on these simple strategies some agents can also learn with their past experience, updating the probability to select a trading strategy according to switching rules as a function of the previous result. Several experiments are carried out. Results show that the time series produced by the interactions of those agents resembles to financial time series, reproducing some stylized facts encountered thereof. The performance of different methods for agent design are also compared.

Energy and performance of parallel systems are an increasing concern for new large-scale systems. Research has been developed in response to this challenge aiming the manufacture of more energy efficient systems. In this context, this paper proposes optimization methods to accelerate performance and increase energy efficiency of geophysics applications used in conjunction to algorithm and GPU memory characteristics. The optimizations we developed applied to Graphics Processing Units (GPU) algorithms for stencil applications achieve a performance improvement of up to 44.65% compared with the read-only version. The computational results have shown that the combination of use read-only memory, the Z-axis internalization and reuse of specific architecture registers allow increase the energy efficiency of up to 54.11% when shared memory was used and increase of up to 44.53% when read-only was used. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Action recognition in videos has gained substantial attention from the computer vision community due to the wide range of possible applications. Recent works have addressed this problem with deep learning methods. The main limitation of existing approaches is their difficulty to learn temporal dynamics due to the high computational load demanded for processing huge amounts of data required to train a model. To overcome this problem, we propose a Compressed Video Convolutional 3D network (CV-C3D). It exploits information from the compressed representation of a video in order to avoid the high computational cost for fully decoding the video stream. The speed up of the computation enables our network to use 3D convolutions for capturing the temporal context efficiently. Our network has the lowest computational complexity among all the compared approaches. Results of our approach in the task of action recognition on two public benchmarks, UCF-101 and HMDB-51, were comparable to the baselines, with the advantage of running at faster inference speed.

This article presents an investigation about the performance of classification algorithms used for predicting payments’ default. Classifiers used for modelling the data set include: Logistic Regression;Naive-Bayes;Decision Trees;Support Vector Machine;k-Nearest Neighbors;Random Forests;and Artificial Neural Networks. These classifiers were applied to both balanced and original data using the Weka data mining tool. Results from experiments revealed that Logistics Regression and Naive Bayes classifiers had the best performance for the chosen data set. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

In this article, we investigate which features are required to enhance a credit scoring model for a Brazilian retail enterprise. In order to find attributes that can improve the performance of classifier algorithms for credit granting, a national and an international survey were carried out. A logistic regression classifier was used and the main result has improved the performance of data mining classifiers. The main contribution of this article was the verification that additional financial and behavioral data increase defaulting prediction performance on credit granting. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Context. We present the wavelength-resolved reverberation mapping (RM) of combined Mg II and UV Fe II broad-line emissions for two intermediate redshifts (z ∼ 1), luminous quasars - HE 0413-4031 and HE 0435-4312, monitored by the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and 1-m class telescopes between 2012 - 2022. Aims. Through the wavelength-resolved technique, we aim to disentangle the Mg II and Fe II emission regions and to build a radius-luminosity relation for UV Fe II emission, which has so far remained unconstrained. Methods. Several time delay methodologies have been applied to constrain the time delays for total Mg II and Fe II emissions. In addition, wavelength-resolved RM is performed to quantify the inflow or outflow of broad-line region (BLR) gas around the supermassive black hole and to disentangle the emission/emitting regions from lines produced in proximity to each other. Results. The mean total FeII time delay is nearly equal to the mean total MgII time delay for HE 0435-4312 suggesting a co-spatiality of their emission regions. However, in HE 0413-4031, the mean FeII time delay is found to be longer than the mean MgII time delay, suggesting that FeII emission is produced at longer distances from the black hole. The UV FeII R-L relation is updated with these two quasars (total four) and compared with the optical FeII relation (20 sources), which suggests that the optical FeII emission region is located further than the UV FeII region by a factor of 1.7-1.9 i.e. RFeII−opt ∼ (1.7 − 1.9)RFeII−UV. Conclusions. Wavelength-resolved reverberation is an efficient way to constrain the geometry and structure of the BLR. We detected a weak pattern in the time delay vs. wavelength relation, suggesting that the MgII broad line originates a bit closer to the SMBH than the UV FeII pseudo continuum, however, the difference is not very significant. Comparison of MgII, UV, and optical FeII R-L relations suggests that the difference may be larger for lower-luminosity
