Enhancing the main characteristics of active methodologies: A case with micro flip teaching and teamwork

All active methodologies have common objectives and processes. Their mission is to ensure that students participate actively in the learning process, cooperating with other students, reflecting, making decisions and creating knowledge. For this purpose, groups that work in a timely manner to carry out an activity or in a more stable way through work teams are usually formed. In both cases, active learning takes place within the groups. This work proposes fostering an active inter-team learning;that is, forming a meta-team where active learning takes place. The aim is checking if students who follow an active methodology, have the active habit;that is, if the work teams share knowledge among themselves and use it to improve their own knowledge. The proposed model contains a virtual layer that all teams can access, making possible the cooperation, the creation of new knowledge, reflection and decision making. This model is applicable to any active methodology and the proposed model has been applied to the Micro Flip Teaching methodology. This quasi experimental research methodology, based on quantitative and qualitative assessment, shows how the work teams, in an Engineering context, in this case, use this virtual layer and how that use impacts the academic performance of their members. Another conclusion of this work is that feedback must be included in active methodologies. © 2019 TEMPUS Publications.

In this work, we have developed a supervised and unsupervised based classification system to classify the animals. Initially, the animal images are segmented using maximal region merging segmentation algorithm. The Gabor features are extracted from segmented images. Further, the extracted features are reduced based on supervised and unsupervised methods. In supervised method, we have used Linear Discriminate Analysis (LDA) dimension reduction technique to reduce the features. The reduced features are fed into symbolic classifier for the purpose of classification. In unsupervised method, we have used Principle component analysis (PCA) dimension reduction technique to reduce the features. The reduced features are fed into K-means algorithm for the purpose of grouping. Experimentation has been conducted on a dataset of 2000 animal images consisting of 20 different categories of animals with varying percentages of training samples. From the proposed model, it is observed that supervised classification system performs better compared to unsupervised method. © 2016 IEEE.

Image processing techniques are being widely developed for helping specialists in analysis of histological images obtained from biopsies for diagnoses and prognoses determination. Several types of cancer can be diagnosed using segmentation methods that are capable to identify specific neoplastic regions. The use of these computational methods makes the analysis of experts more objective and less time-consuming. Thus, the progressive development of histological images segmentation is an important step for modern medicine. This study presents the progress of recent advances in methods for segmentation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, follicular lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma images. The paper shows the main techniques of image processing employed in the stages of preprocessing, detection/segmentation and post-processing of published approaches and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. This study presents the most often used segmentation techniques for these images segmentation, such as thresholding, region-based methods and K-means clustering algorithm. The addressed cancers are also described in histological details as well as possible variations in the tissue preparation and its digitization. Besides, it includes a review of validation techniques and discusses the potential future directions of research in the segmentation of these neoplasias. © 2017

The writer identification task by using manuscripts became a very important research topic in forensics analysis of documents. It happens because the writing can be considered as an identifying characteristic of a person. There are different databases of writers through the use of manuscripts and containing different alphabets. In this paper, the CVL database will be used to address the writer identification problem with the focus of using manuscripts taken from different languages (i.e. English and German), but using the same alphabet (Latin). To that end, the texture generation is created starting from the original documents and textural features are extracted by using some well-known texture descriptors presented in the literature: Local Binary Pattern (LBP), and Local Phase Quantization (LPQ). Furthermore, a Convolutional Neural Networks is used to perform the same classification task also starting from the original documents after the texture generation is performed. In both approaches, a zoning scheme which divides the image in smaller parts is used, and one classifier is created for each zone. After that, the outputs of classifiers from different zones are combined using some well-known (i.e. max rule, sum rule, and product rule) in order to get the final decision. © 2017 IEEE.

New sequencing technologies such as Illumina/Solexa, SOLiD/ABI, and 454/Roche, revolutionized the biological researches. In this context, the SOLiD platform has a particular sequencing type, known as multiplex run, which enables the sequencing of several samples in a single run. It implies in cost reduction and simplifies the analysis of related samples. Meanwhile, this sequencing type requires an additional filtering step to ensure the reliability of the results. Thus, we propose in this paper a probabilistic model which considers the intrinsic characteristics of each sequencing to characterize multiplex runs and filter low-quality data, increasing the data analysis reliability of multiplex sequencing performed on SOLiD. The results show that the proposed model proves to be satisfactory due to: 1) identification of faults in the sequencing process;2) adaptation and development of new protocols for sample preparation;3) the assignment of a degree of confidence to the data generated;and 4) guiding a filtering process, without discarding useful sequences in an arbitrary manner.

A fractional-order robust controller to control a reverse osmosis desalination plant is proposed. The dynamics of this plant was experimentally identified. A multivariable mathematical model was obtained which showed large plant parameter variations. The proposed control system is composed of a decoupler, a diagonal compensator of the less variable dynamics, and a fractional order PI controller in each of the two loops. The fractional orders of these last controllers were optimized in order to improve the phase margin robustness. It was shown that these controllers outperformed the robustness achieved using PI controllers. © 2017

In this paper we are exploring a novel approach to extracting the features from a hand-written offline signature. The experiments are carried out on a user created data base. Which includes 50 classes and each class consists of 15 random forgeries and 5 skilled forgeries;total count of samples in the data base is 1000. Here we are considering and extracting the geometrical distance metric features, end points alignment and pruned projection features, vector of angle and one existing SIFT features. To obtain the similarity matrix we apply the different technique called one-to-one string pattern matching. The simple measure of similarity R itself is serve as a feature. Late the patterns are classified using one supervised classifier like Knn-classifier the results are compared. In biometric experiments accuracy should be measured in terms of equal error rates. We are comparing the results of existing and proposed methods and justifying the results. For verification and identification error rates are 1.2% and 1.4% by novel approach and that of existing SIFT feature is 1.4% and 1.6%. © 2016 IEEE.

High extinction and crowding create a natural limitation for optical surveys towards the central regions of the Milky Way where the gas and dust are mainly confined. Large scale near-IR surveys of the Galactic Plane and Bulge are a good opportunity to explore open scientific questions as well as to test our capability to explore future datasets efficiently. Thanks to the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey it is now possible to explore a large number of objects in those regions. This paper addresses the variability analysis of all VVV point sources having more than 10 observations in VVVDR4 using a novel approach. In total, the near-IR light curves of 288,378,769 sources were analysed using methods developed in the New Insight Into Time Series Analysis project. As a result, we present a complete sample having 44,998,752 variable star candidates (VVV-CVSC), which include accurate individual coordinates, near-IR magnitudes (ZYJHs), extinctions A(Ks), variability indices, periods, amplitudes, among other parameters to assess the science. Unfortunately, a side effect of having a highly complete sample, is also having a high level of contamination by non-variable (contamination ratio of non-variables to variables is slightly over 10:1). To deal with this, we also provide some flags and parameters that can be used by the community to decrease the number of variable candidates without heavily decreasing the completeness of the sample. In particular, we icross-dentified 339,601 of our sources with Simbad and AAVSO databases, which provide us with information for these objects at other wavelegths. This subsample constitutes a unique resource to study the corresponding near-IR variability of known sources as well as to assess the IR variability related with X-ray and Gamma-Ray sources. An autonomic hierarchical reliable broadcast protocol for asynchronous distributed systems with failure detection

Reliable broadcast is a fundamental building block in fault-tolerant distributed systems. It consists of a basic primitive that provides agreement among processes of the system on the delivery of each broadcast message, i.e., either none or all correct processes deliver the message, despite failures of processes. In this work, we propose a reliable broadcast solution on top of VCube, assuming that the system is asynchronous. VCube is an autonomic monitoring layer that organizes processes on a hypercube-like overlay which provides several logarithmic properties even in the presence of processes failures. We consider that processes can fail by crashing, do not recover, and faults are eventually detected by all correct processes. The protocol tolerates false suspicions by sending additional messages to suspected processes but logarithmic properties of the algorithm are still kept. Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed solution compared to an one-to-all strategy. © 2017, The Author(s).
