Many interactive image processing approaches are based on semi-supervised learning, which employ both labeled and unlabeled data in its training process. In the interactive image segmentation problem, a human specialist labels some pixels of an object while the semi-supervised algorithm labels the remaining pixels of the segment. The particle competition and cooperation model is a recent graph-based semi-supervised learning approach. It employs particles walking in a graph to classify the data items corresponding to graph nodes. Each particle group aims to dominate most unlabeled nodes, spreading their label, and preventing enemy particles invasion. In this paper, the particle competition and cooperation model is extended to perform interactive image segmentation. Each image pixel is converted into a graph node, which is connected to its nearest neighbors according to their visual features and location in the original image. Labeled pixel generates particles that propagate their label to the unlabeled pixels. The particle model also takes the contributions from the adjacent pixels to classify less confident labeled pixels. computer simulations are performed on real-world images, including images from the Microsoft GrabCut dataset, which allows a straightly comparison with other techniques. The segmentation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The lack of formal foundations of UML results in imprecise models since UML only defines graphical notations, but not their formal semantics. However, in safety-critical applications, formal semantics is a requirement for verification. Semantics for the key parts of activities and classes of UML is defined by the semantics of a foundational subset for executable UML models (fUML). Moreover, the base semantics given by fUML defines the formal semantics of UML. In this paper, we evaluate a subset of the base semantics given by fUML covering its formal definition and its use for verification. From the practical perspective, we show with a simple example how the base semantics can support formal verification through theorem proving. The initial results show that the base semantics, when mature, can play an important role in the formal verification of UML models. Copyright © 2014 SCITEPRESS - science and Technology Publications. Rules classified as non-chaotic are usually discarded from the set of keys in cellular automata used as criptographic methods, as they exhibit predictable behavior regarding the dynamic evolution of the cellular automata configurations. The number of possible keys, in fact, is an important factor for the security of a cryptographic method. This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a type of cellular automata network whose structure is derived from small-word concepts, when evolving rules not classified as chaotic. The constructed connection structure of the cellular automata network modifies the dynamic behavior of transition rules associated to the standard model. The experiments show that rules classified as periodical are capable of producing results equivalent to those by chaotic rules, thus suggesting the use of such structures as better candidates for criptography applications than standard cellular automata. © 2014 IEEE.

High-frequency noise is present in magnetic resonance images and it is usually removed by a filtering process. The anisotropic diffusion filter (ADF) was proposed to adaptively remove the noise, maintaining the image edges. However, as quantified in this paper for the first time, ADF methods still produce unsatisfactory results. While previous ADF implementations used the gradient of the strongest edges or the standard deviation of a planar region (i.e. without any edges), it is proposed a novel approach with improved parameter estimation based on both edge and planar region, overcoming some of ADF important limitations. Our framework was validated in more than thirty magnetic resonance images leading to more consistent results. © IFAC.

With the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) vision, RFID technology has attracted more and more interests from many industries. In the EPCglobal standard which standardizes RFID architectural framework and interfaces, the Electronic Product Code Information System (EPCIS) - the repository in the RFID network - plays a pivotal role in storing dynamic and historical RFID trajectory data, well-tailored to supply chain applications. However, in the IoT era, EPCIS should be capable of storing a large amount of realtime and continuous time-series RFID data in a scalable manner. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the requirements and current design of EPCIS and report current limitations of SQL-based approaches for IoT applications. To cope with these limitations, we explore a NoSQL-based approach for EPCIS in the IoT and propose a column-family-based data model and customization for Cassandra-based EPCIS. Using real-world implementation, we also conduct a performance comparison between MySQL and Cassandra in different deployment scenarios (i.e., physical and virtual machines). As a result, we show the benefits of using Cassandra datastore for EPCIS in the IoT in terms of response time, throughput, and flexibility. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper describes the use of Scrum in a collaborative software project. It applies agile software development, big data, and internet of things to reduce frauds within credit card operations. It reports the experience of students from three different courses taking the graduate program in Electronics and computer Engineering at the Brazilian Aeronautics Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica - ITA) during the first semester of 2014. The major contribution of this work is the application of Interdisciplinary Problem Based Learning, where students have worked asynchronously and geographically dispersed to deliver valuable increments, aiming to solve related problems. This work was performed during four project sprints on seventeen weeks. The main output was working software, developed and tested using Scrum and its best practices. At the end, a big data environment was used as a transparent way of fulfilling the needs of financial transaction analysts.

This paper focuses on the importance of test driven development, in an interdisciplinary academic case study, involving unauthorized access and fraud. In it, Problem Based Learning (PBL) enabled the organization of an environment for diverse knowledge and skills, favorable to experimentation and prototyping of new models, methods, techniques, and tools. The application of the principles of agile methods aimed at overcoming difficulties related to the computer systems development, such as requirement changes, uncertainties, and risks, in order to improve quality. Unlike traditional methodologies, tests were used since the beginning of the development lifecycle with Acceptance Test Driven Development (ATDD). The agile testing quadrants guided the categorized elaboration of tests during unit testing, integration testing, system testing, and acceptance testing phases. The main contribution of this article was the integrated application of PBL, ATDD, and agile development in the case study of a Real-Time Embedded System for Unauthorized Access Control and Fraud Detection (Sistema Embarcado de Tempo Real para Controle de Acessos Indevidos e Deteccao de Fraudes - SETRAIF).

It is well known that human preferences in decisions under risk do not always complies with expected utility theory (EUT). In fact, there are several effects that are inconsistent with basic tenets of EUT. Alternative theories have been proposed and perhaps the most well studied is Prospect Theory (PT). Recent work showed experimental results that support the idea that financial professionals may behave according to PT and violate EUT. Meanwhile, some argue that economy needs agent-based modeling, because it may be a better way to help guide financial policies than mathematical models. If financial professional behave according to PT in markets, then agent-based modeling needs PT based agents. Our idea is creating trading agents based on PT to simulate a market. However, the creation of an artificial agent based on PT as originally proposed is very hard and limited to two outcome prospects. We propose an agent model based on an extension of PT called Smooth Prospect Theory (SPT). We used this model to create agents to populate an artificial market with SPT and EUT agents. It was used to predict real market be-havior for short periods. Software engineers often resort to code search practices to support software maintenance and evolution tasks, in particular code reuse. An issue that affects code search is the vocabulary mismatch problem: while searching for a particular function, users have to guess the exact words that were chosen by original developers to name code entities. In this paper we present an automatic query expansion (AQE) approach that uses word relations to increase the chances of finding relevant code. The approach is applied on top of Test-Driven Code Search (TDCS), a promising code retrieval technique that uses test cases as inputs to formulate the search query, but can also be used with other techniques that handle interface definitions to produce queries (interface-driven code search). Since these techniques rely on keywords and types, the vocabulary mismatch problem is also relevant. AQE is carried out by leveraging WordNet, a type thesaurus for expanding types, and another thesaurus containing only software-related word relations. Our approach is general but was specifically designed for non-native English speakers, who are frequently unaware of the most common terms used to name functions in software. Our evaluation with 36 non-native subjects - including developers and senior computer science students - provides evidence that our approach can improve the chances of finding relevant functions by 41% (recall improvement of 30%, on average), without hurting precision. This paper presents an application of agile method on academic access and fraud control system. It describes the conceptualization, development, and testing process of a case study, using Problem Based Learning (PBL) and some collaborative tools. It was developed, on the 1st semester of 2012, at the Brazilian Aeronautics Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica - ITA) by graduate students during three different multidisciplinary courses involving geographically distributed teams. Its main results are presented, discussed, and analyzed, providing an overview of a successful new academic application development.
