Plant phenology has been exploited as an important research venue for assessing the impact of climate changes. One common approach for monitoring vegetation relies on the use of digital cameras. The employment of imaging techniques for phenological observation allows the extraction and analysis of visual characteristics based on color and texture information with the objective of determining plant life cycle changes, such as the beginning of the leaf flushing or the senescence period. This paper presents a novel approach for detecting phenological changes by analyzing image temporal series. Our method is based on the use of visual rhythm analysis and the adoption of a dissimilarity measure to detect visual changes in the time line. Experiments were conducted on a three-year data set composed of 3,538 vegetation images and 21 samples of 6 different species of interest. Results demonstrate that the proposed change detection approach is able to effectively identify phenological events. © 2014 IEEE.

Nowadays, Web services and others SOA-based applications have attracted more attention in the software industry. The RESTful Web Service becomes an important service architectural style due to its simplicity, heterogeneity and web-based format. One of the principal advantages of the REST architecture is the interoperability. However, different implementation languages and representation data formats can break interoperability, especially on semantic description of these services. In this paper, we propose the use of a model driven approach for the development of semantic RESTful Web services. Raising the development abstraction level, providing language-independent metamodels of services and semantic resources and by model transformations it is possible to develop interoperable complex services. © 2013 ACM.

We present the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation with the ESO NTT and Gemini South telescopes of eight new 6.0 AB 2 using SED model fitting to photometric data from the Dark Energy Survey (g, r, i, z, Y), the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (J, H, K) and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (W1, W2). The photometric data was fitted with a grid of quasar model SEDs with redshift dependent Lyman-α forest absorption and a range of intrinsic reddening as well as a series of low mass cool star models. Candidates were ranked using on a SED-model based χ2-statistic, which is extendable to other future imaging surveys (e.g. LSST, Euclid). Our spectral confirmation success rate is 100% without the need for follow-up photometric observations as used in other studies of this type. Combined with automatic removal of the main types of non-astrophysical contaminants the method allows large data sets to be processed without human intervention and without being over run by spurious false candidates. We also present a robust parametric redshift estimating technique that gives compararable accuracy to MgII and CO based redshift estimators. We find two z ∼ 6.2 quasars with HII near zone sizes 6 3 proper Mpc which could indicate that these quasars may be young with ages . 106 − 107 years or lie in over dense regions of the IGM. The z = 6.5 quasar VDESJ0224−4711 has JAB = 19.75 is the second most luminous quasar known with z > 6.5. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this work, we are proposing a new machine learning strategy for classification task for imbalanced data. We are using lung image data by Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC), since LIDC data is a better example for imbalanced dataset. In this work we are using sufficiently large dataset which contains 4,532 nodules extracted from CT images. Later we consider 55 low level nodule image features and radiologists ratings for experiments. This work is being dealt in two stages. (1) data level learning and (2) algorithm level learning. In first stage, we are balancing the dataset prior to classification process. We are using resampling approach for this task. In second stage, we are using ensemble of classifiers to predict lung nodule rating. We are using wide range of classifier models for constructing an ensemble. We use Bagged Decision Tree, naïve Bayes, Boosted Decision Trees, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) in a classifier library. Stacking algorithm is used to combine the different classifier models in library to construct higher level ensemble. We are evaluating the performance of our model on five metrics: Accuracy, precision, recall, F-score and Kappa statistics. Results show that our method yields much improved scores as we are refining at both, data level and algorithm level. © 2013 Springer.

Systems engineers use SysML as a vendor-independent language to model Cyber-Physical Systems. However, SysML does not provide an executable form to define behavior but this is needed to detect critical issues as soon as possible. Action Language for Foundational UML (Alf) integrated with SysML can offer some degree of precision. In this paper, we present an Alf specialization that introduces the synchronous-reactive model of computation to SysML, through definition of not explicitly constrained semantics: timing, concurrency, and inter-object communication. The proposed specialization is well-suited for safety-critical systems because it is deterministic. We study one example already modeled in the literature, to compare these approaches with our one. The initial results show that the proposed specialization helps to couple complexity, provides better composition, and enables deterministic behavior definition. © 2013 Polish Information Processing Society.

Augmented Reality combined with adaptive hypermedia plays an important role on providing effective information visualization systems. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive architecture model in order to provide adaptive information visualization systems with augmented reality. We also provide a novel visual metaphor for real-valued, low-dimensional data with optimal values for each feature inspired on the pseudo-flower metaphor.

We present the Dark Energy Survey (DES) discovery of DES15E2mlf, the most distant superluminous supernova (SLSN) spectroscopically confirmed to date. The light curves and Gemini spectroscopy of DES15E2mlf indicate that it is a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) at z = 1.861 (a lookback time of ∼ 10 Gyr) and peaking at MAB = −22.3 ± 0.1 mag. Given the high redshift, our data probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (1400–3500 Å) properties of the SN, finding velocity of the C iii feature changes by ∼ 5600 km s−1 over 14 days around maximum light. We find the host galaxy of DES15E2mlf has a stellar mass of 3.5+3−2..64 × 109 M, which is more massive than the typical SLSN-I host galaxy. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This work investigates elementary cellular automata comparing their dynamic evolution on two topologies: The usual regular lattice and a small-world network constructed as a directed graph. The number of iterations for any initial perturbation to propagate over all cells of the automaton corresponds to how quickly an initial configuration reaches a high entropy state, and the temporal rate of propagation of the perturbation can be evaluated from a chaotic set of elementary cellular automata rules using an entropy measure. Results indicate that the average entropy can be nearly tripled in the small-world network topology, suggesting much faster applications (e.g. in Cryptography) from alterations in the topological arrangement of usual cellular automata regular lattices. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper proposes an incremental, structural and contextual validation method for Nested Context Language (NCL) documents. As part of the proposed method, we define a declarative metalanguage to ensure low coupling between NCL structure and the validator code, which simplifies the validation of new language profiles. Requirements such as incremental processing and multilingual messages are also covered by this work. We present an implementation of this method using component architecture as a proof of concept and also conduct a performance evaluation to compare the traditional and incremental validation approaches. © 2013 The Brazilian computer Society.
