The on-demand provisioning of computing and storage resources and the corresponding pay-as-you-go billing have made cloud computing a popular paradigm to achieve a high technological utility. While most use cases can adequately be covered by the offers of existing public cloud providers, the granularity in provisioning and pricing is not high enough for several task execution scenarios. Nested cloud environments are among the concepts to circumvent these problems. They let consumers manage their allocations with a higher degree of flexibility, including the reselling or repurposing to other sub-consumers. In this paper, we take a critical look at the state of the art of nesting technologies and reason about the resource consumption overhead and the resulting economic profitability of employing a nested cloud. The results are validated within a cloud resource broker.

Inaccuracies are also found in a natural way in real life situations that require realistic solutions. Fuzzy logic has to deal with the uncertainties inherent in this situation. The initiative to shape the inaccuracies in real life optimization problems is applied in an increasing variety of practical fields. Knowing the importance of this problem, the purpose of this work is to present a new dual approach in fuzzy environment. It solves quadratic programming problems with fuzzy coefficients and uncertain order relation in the set of constraints. The approach proposal is implemented in two theoretical numerical examples, which show their efficiency.

Social networks provide a new way of communication that still preserves our human social interaction. Due to the widespread use of mobile devices, people tend to use their smartphone or tablet as the main way to make that interaction. Furthermore, applications developed to these devices are fostering the use of contextual information, such as the location of the user. In this way, this article proposes Mingle, a model for a spontaneous social network targeted at mobile devices. In our proposal, the social network is spontaneous, i.e. involves only people that are physically present in a specific location. Besides presenting the model, we show a developed prototype using Android-based devices. We evaluated Mingle employing two strategies, a usage case and a performance evaluation. The results were encouraging and show the potential of deploying Mingle in real situations.

Emotions play an important role in human interaction, communication, coordination, and cooperation. The perception of emotional and affective state in present and past group's activities is a relevant issue since emotional awareness influence the outcome of cooperative work. While there is a growing interest in providing computational support for recognition and representation of emotions, few research efforts explore the potential of Brain Controlled Interfaces (BCI) to collect and present emotional awareness in synchronous collaborative systems. In this paper, we present an initial step in exploring how a low-cost off-the-shelf electroencephalograph (EEG) system can be used to provide emotional awareness information in synchronous collaborative editing systems.

In this paper we present an approach to identify opinion of web users from opinionated texts and to classify web users opinion into positive or negative. It is found that a few opinionated texts even though opinionated yields values that are classified neither as positive nor as negative by opinion detection algorithm. When an opinionated text is subjected to opinion detection algorithm, it yields a value that is lesser or greater or equal to the threshold. If it is less than the threshold, it is classified as negative opinion. If it is greater than the threshold, it is classified as positive opinion. If it is equal to the threshold, it is considered as neutral opinion. Different approaches can be considered to obtain opinion from these computed neutral texts so as to classify texts efficiently as positive or negative. We propose the use of pattern and keyword based approach for detection and classification of users opinion from opinionated texts. Our approach is effective in detecting opinion and reducing in-correct classifications. It is found to better than the other implemented methods on different data sets. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

One mean of obtaining information on the Web, which complements or replaces other forms of access, is with the use of Chatterbots. To use this technology, several factors must be considered in its development, especially when oriented at children, such as choice of technology, design and assemble knowledge in a database, with the help of many professionals of different areas to understand and adapt the system. In this work, we emphasized the development of a Virtual Learning Companion, calling Buti, to provide information of healthy lifestyle for children and preteens, which have similar cognitive development, but are differently from adults. Initially, the system's interaction was created taking in consideration the existing systems, which have a passive characteristic, centering the interaction from the user to the system. From tests carried through the help of psychologist and taking in consideration the relation with the concepts of the human development defended by theoreticians of the education area, we verified the necessity of adjustments in the system's interaction for this public. Complementary to this modification, the use of Affective Computing was made;applying personality and emotion, in order to obtain a better relationship between system and user. © 2012 IADIS.

In a self-organizing virtual community, the members are responsible for defining the norms that govern the community. A model for self-organizing virtual communities is proposed. The model is useful to study a self-organizing community and understand how it is structured in order to improve its self-organization feature. The model is used in two investigations. We investigate the need of self-organization feature by virtual communities. We also investigate the participation of members in the self-organization process, by identifying the categories of members that contribute significantly during the elaboration of norms.

Interpolation is a useful technique for storage of complex functions on limited memory space: some few sampling values are stored on a memory bank, and the function values in between are calculated by interpolation. This paper presents a programmable Look-Up Table-based interpolator, which uses a reconfigurable nonuniform sampling scheme: the sampled points are not uniformly spaced. Their distribution can also be reconfigured to minimize the approximation error on specific portions of the interpolated function's domain. Switching from one set of configuration parameters to another set, selected on the fly from a variety of precomputed parameters, and using different sampling schemes allow for the interpolation of a plethora of functions, achieving memory saving and minimum approximation error. As a study case, the proposed interpolator was used as the core of a programmable noise generator - output signals drawn from different Probability Density Functions were produced for testing FPGA implementations of chaotic encryption algorithms. As a result of the proposed method, the interpolation of a specific transformation function on a Gaussian noise generator reduced the memory usage to 2.71% when compared to the traditional uniform sampling scheme method, while keeping the approximation error below a threshold equal to 0.000030518. © 2012 Élvio Carlos Dutra e Silva Júnior et al.

This paper generalizes the Small Gain Theorem - SGT to cope with time-delay switched linear systems. The main purpose is to obtain delay-dependent stability conditions that can be imposed by means of an appropriate switching strategy. Both cases of switching strategies corresponding to state and output feedback are considered. The new version of SGT is specially important in the framework of switched linear systems because it allows robustness analysis with respect to parameter or frequency domain uncertainty arising in ℋ ∞ control problems and constant time-delay modeling. Since only sufficient conditions are given, the conservativeness of the final results is evaluated in terms of the gain promoted by the switching strategy, exclusively. The theory is illustrated by means of academic examples.

In this paper we used a single classifier and an ensemble of classifiers with meta learning strategies to predict radiologists characteristics rating of the lung nodule of the Lung Image Database Consortium. In particular, in this paper we carried out performance analysis experiment of single classifier as against ensemble of classifiers (ensemble of classifiers are considered to be panel of experts in machine learning). We used 54 low level image feature of nodule in four category (shape, texture, size and intensity) and 7 characteristics rating (lobulation, malignancy, sphericity, spiculation, margin, subtlety and texture) from panel of radiologists as a features to create a prediction model. Using our proposed approach, the classification accuracy of ensemble of classifiers is better compared to the accuracy by single classifier which is a generally accepted result. However the correlation of these with that based on Statistics (Kappa Statistics) is very inconsistent. This raises a very important issue of gap between medically significant and statistically significant results. This issue is of serious concern in biomedical field.
