The concept of Digital Twins has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential for improving the performance of production systems. One promising area for Digital Twins is Smart Maintenance, enabling the simulation of different strategies without disrupting operations in the real system. This study proposes a high-level framework to integrate Digital Twins to support Smart Maintenance data-driven decision making in production lines. We implement, then, a case study of a lab scale drone factory to demonstrate how the production line performance evaluation is made under different what-if maintenance scenarios. The effects of this Smart Maintenance decision analysis approach were evaluated according to Key Performance Indicators from literature. The identified contributions are: (i) Digital Twin demonstrator focused on smart maintenance;(ii) implementation of smart maintenance data-driven decision analysis concepts;(iii) design and evaluation of what-if maintenance scenarios. © 2023 IEEE.

Gyromagnetic coaxial lines are considered nonlinear transmission lines due to the nonlinear effects of the domain magnets of the ferrites loaded in their coaxial inner conductor, and their main applications are in defense as a high-power microwave (HPM) device used in mobile platforms for shutting down drones or disrupting enemy communications on the battlefield. At INPE, a developed compact bench gyromagnetic line resonated at 1.9 GHz with lack of frequency tunability by both axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. The paper's goal is to understand all the physics behind the process of RF in this experiment, where we present a consistent description of the phenomenon based on the analysis of the magnetic torque equation to obtain the susceptibility tensor for the AC ferrite magnetization. © 2023 IEEE.

Higher Education Institutions must define and monitor strategies and policies essential for decision-making in their various areas and levels, in which Business Intelligence plays a leading role. This research addresses the problem of Business Intelligence system adoption in Higher Education Institutions, with a view, in the first instance, to identify and characterise the strategic objectives that underpin decision-making, activities, processes, indicators and information in Higher Education Institutions. After a literature review, it was found that the absence of a roadmap that can serve as a reference to implement a Business Intelligence system in Higher Education Institutions may limit the adoption of this type of solution. Therefore, this research intends to present the methodology of a proposed roadmap for the implementation of Business Intelligence systems in Higher Education Institutions, that allows for increasing its capacity for analysis and evaluation of the data and information available in the various systems and platforms. © 2023 ICSBT International Conference on Smart Business Technologies. In this work, we propose a Reinforcement Learning (RL) training methodology using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Curriculum Learning (CL) to make simulated Very Small Size Soccer robots learn to convert penalty kicks against two types of opponents: the “line follow” goalkeeper, which defends the goal by following the goal line, and the offensive goalkeeper, which uses the univector field navigation technique to attack the ball. The RL agents trained using this methodology demonstrated sophisticated penalty kick skills with high conversion rates. The best-evaluated RL agent achieved a conversion rate of over 90% against the “line follow” goalkeeper and of over 71% against the offensive goalkeeper. Comparisons with the univector agent showed that the RL agents significantly outperformed it, with conversion rates 78.71% higher against the “line follow” goalkeeper and 1997.66% higher against the offensive goalkeeper.

On the Undecidability of Artificial Intelligence Alignment: Machines that Halt

The inner alignment problem, which asserts whether an arbitrary artificial intelligence (AI) model satisfices a non-trivial alignment function of its outputs given its inputs, is undecidable. This is rigorously proved by Rice's theorem, which is also equivalent to a reduction to Turing's Halting Problem, whose proof sketch is presented in this work. Nevertheless, there is an enumerable set of provenly aligned AIs that are constructed from a finite set of provenly aligned operations. Therefore, we argue that the alignment should be a guaranteed property from the AI architecture rather than a characteristic imposed post-hoc on an arbitrary AI model. Furthermore, while the outer alignment problem is the definition of a judge function that captures human values and preferences, we propose that such a function must also impose a halting constraint that guarantees that the AI model always reaches a terminal state in finite execution steps. Our work presents examples and models that illustrate this constraint and the intricate challenges involved, advancing a compelling case for adopting an intrinsically hard-aligned approach to AI systems architectures that ensures halting. This paper uses a design-oriented 7-parameter MOSFET model to assess the Zero Distortion Bias Point (ZDBP). The ZDBP existence and its dependencies on the main Short-Channel Effects (SCE) typically found in advanced CMOS technologies such as Drain-Induced Barrier Lowering (DIBL), carrier velocity saturation, carrier mobility reduction, and Channel Length Modulation (CLM) are herein investigated. The design-oriented model used here is based on the inversion charge concept which preserves the physics of the MOS transistor, while keeping valid for all bias regimes (from weak to strong inversion) and all operating regions (linear and saturated). Across technologies, this paper's results demonstrate that ZDBP appears around the Threshold Voltage (VTH) when carrier mobility reduction and carrier velocity saturation are included in the model and its localization orbits around the VTH-55mV © 2023 IEEE.

Transformer-Based Model for Monocular Visual Odometry: A Video Understanding Approach

Estimating the camera’s pose given images from a single camera is a traditional task in mobile robots and autonomous vehicles. This problem is called monocular visual odometry and often relies on geometric approaches that require considerable engineering effort for a specific scenario. Deep learning methods have been shown to be generalizable after proper training and with a large amount of available data. Transformer-based architectures have dominated the state-of-the-art in natural language processing and computer vision tasks, such as image and video understanding. In this work, we deal with the monocular visual odometry as a video understanding task to estimate the 6 degrees of freedom of a camera’s pose. We contribute by presenting the TSformer-VO model based on spatio-temporal self-attention mechanisms to extract features from clips and estimate the motions in an end-to-end manner. Our approach achieved competitive state-of-the-art performance compared with geometry-based and deep learning-based methods on the KITTI visual odometry dataset, outperforming the DeepVO implementation highly accepted in the visual odometry community. The gaming industry moves billions of dollars annually. However, there are still challenges to be overcome, such as player privacy, a need that has become evident with the emergence of new personal data protection legislation (e.g., GDPR, LGPD, CCPA). In this case, solutions that address privacy in the game creation process are increasingly constant. Traditional software engineering processes focus on non-functional requirements and differ from game creation processes in some elements. In this article, we propose an epistemic approach in which we use concepts from Semiotic Engineering to instigate the designer, through questions, to think about the player’s privacy in the game’s pre-production phase. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Supply chains face a myriad of adverse risks that impact their daily operations and make them vulnerable. In addition, supply chains continue to grow in size and complexity which further sophisticates the problem. Lack of a structured approach and limitations in existing risk management methods contribute towards effective mitigation strategies not being properly developed. In this paper, we develop a discrete event simulation modelling approach to quantify the performance and risk assessment of a manufacturing supply chain in Sweden which is under the impact of risks. This approach could support decision makers by prioritizing risks according to their performance impact and facilitating the development of mitigation strategies to enhance the resilience of the supply chain. The conceptual digital model can also be used to generate synthetic data to build an artificial intelligence-enhanced predictive demonstrator model to showcase capabilities for building data-driven resilience of the supply chain.
