A visual target tracking identification by employing using a "Winner-takes-all" artificial neural network is proposed in this paper. In this approach a modified Kohonen Neural Network is the mechanism used both to determine the position as to represent the target trajectory given a sequence of images. Some of the advantages employing this technique is that the initial condition are supplied randomly and that the performance of the algorithm is independent of the initial condition as well as of the number of them. Besides, this algorithm converge for the center of mass of the target. This methodology is useful in remote and local systems when information is given by images be it related to aerospace applications, robotics, radar systems, or industrial applications. The proposed algorithm is here used in the identification of airplane trajectory by using digital images.

A fuzzy system intertwined with an optimization technique based on genetic algorithm for designing a VLS-1 Launcher attitude control system is proposed in this paper. A linear-quadratic optimization yields gain-scheduled controllers, where Q and R weighting matrices are scored by means of a fuzzy system, instead of directly being chosen by a human designer. As a consequence, not only the optimization technique is extended to the entire launcher simulated trajectory, but also the specifications can be dealt individually. The linguistic variables of the fuzzy system are defined according to performance (rise time and overshoot) and robustness (gain and phase margins) issues, regarding gain vector smoothness, as well. The control system obtained with fuzzy design presents many favorable results according a linear analysis and nonlinear digital simulations.

This paper presents a new method for matching metric maps generated by mobile robots that act cooperatively. This process of information matching makes it possible to perform global map generation from local maps (possibly partial and nonconsistent) provided by individual robots. The proposed method is based on a paraconsistent artificial neural network model that considers as input data the Euclidean distances between the points from each one of the partial maps. The use of this kind of input information makes the individual maps invariant with respect to relative rotation and translation among the robots in the mapping environment. The neural network then analyzes these distances to determine what are the matching belief relations among the points of the distinct maps. The algorithm implemented for the neural architecture achieved good results with very satisfactory computational performance, and made it possible to determine the certainty and contradiction degress in the map point matching analysis. The results show that the proposed approach is robust for the cases were it was applied. Equally important is the fact that the considered architecture allows for the combination of information from partial maps acquired in execution time during navigation.

In this paper, a method for detecting the vertical skew and correcting the skew for characters, specifically when subjected for recognition is presented. Character skew correction is an essential preprocessing event required during document understanding. If the skew in characters are not corrected then the readability of OCRs gets reduced. The method consists of three stages. In the first stage, the direction of skew is identified in character at a macro level with a knowledgebase. In the second stage the amount or angle of skew to its base line is detected with the support of line drawing algorithm. In the final stage, the detected skew in the character is corrected by transformation process. The method has been tested with various printed and handwritten samples and readability analysis is performed with respect to an OCR.

Collaborative Editing Systems require mechanisms of control in order to make the collaboration more effective. The synchronous collaboration allows the notion of simultaneity;however, it demands more adequate perception elements. In the collaborative edition of UML diagrams where dependencies between their modeling elements do exist, it is necessary to apply a mechanism of control to support the edition of consistent models. In this work, we present a multi-level locking mechanism that automatically manages locks in the modeling elements of UML diagrams during a collaborative session. This paper also describes a controlled experiment conducted to study the use of the multi-level locking mechanism during collaborative modeling sessions, and the observations from the empirical data collected.

Some metrics applied to the domain framework development not evaluate the reuse from example applications model. This work establishes a group of metrics that can be applied to evaluate the reuse during the analysis phase of domain framework development. Using the proposed group of metrics, it was possible to measure the requirements reuse of the example applications. These metrics allow confronting the amount of frozen and hot spots found in initial phases. The application of these metrics was illustrated by a car racing game framework, built through a responsibility-driven method.
