Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) is an established method used to develop Multi-Agent System (MAS) motion planning algorithms under particular requirements, such as Line of Sight (LOS) connectivity. However, maintaining the tractability of the ensuing models is a known issue. In this paper, we propose a novel sufficient condition for LOS between agents of a MAS and discuss its implementation in a (MIP) model as constraints. The functionality of the proposal is demonstrated through simulations in a connectivity-constrained motion planning and decision-making problem. A comparison between the novel method and an earlier approach shows that the new proposal requires fewer optimization variables and constraints to be implemented. Finally, we employ Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that this reduction in the complexity of the models consistently decreases the time required to solve them.

Gyromagnetic coaxial lines are considered nonlinear transmission lines due to the nonlinear effects of the domain magnets of the ferrites loaded in their coaxial inner conductor, and their main applications are in defense as a high-power microwave (HPM) device used in mobile platforms for shutting down drones or disrupting enemy communications on the battlefield. At INPE, a developed compact bench gyromagnetic line resonated at 1.9 GHz with lack of frequency tunability by both axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. The paper’s goal is to understand all the physics behind the process of RF in this experiment, where we present a consistent description of the phenomenon based on the analysis of the magnetic torque equation to obtain the susceptibility tensor for the AC ferrite magnetization.

This paper uses a design-oriented 7-parameter MOSFET model to assess the Zero Distortion Bias Point (ZDBP). The ZDBP existence and its dependencies on the main Short-Channel Effects (SCE) typically found in advanced CMOS technologies such as Drain-Induced Barrier Lowering (DIBL), carrier velocity saturation, carrier mobility reduction, and Channel Length Modulation (CLM) are herein investigated. The design-oriented model used here is based on the inversion charge concept which preserves the physics of the MOS transistor, while keeping valid for all bias regimes (from weak to strong inversion) and all operating regions (linear and saturated). Across technologies, this paper’s results demonstrate that ZDBP appears around the Threshold Voltage (V TH ) when carrier mobility reduction and carrier velocity saturation are included in the model and its localization orbits around the V TH − 55mV < V TH < V TH + 100mV depending mainly on the DIBL and carrier mobility reduction parameters.

In light of the challenges posed by the often unavailability of coherent data in manufacturing for operational Artificial Intelligence (AI) decision support systems, the generation and utilization of synthetic datasets have become essential. This study introduces a simple numerical Synthetic Simulated Environment (SSE) using timed and parametrizable Petri Net (PN) modules, embedded in a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure described by an adjacency matrix to represent material flow. Implemented in PyTorch for seamless integration with AI components, our simulation framework simplifies manufacturing systems, yet remains expandable for diverse use cases. The simulation model was demonstrated displaying its capability of generating synthetic data. This approach explores the practicality and applicability of generated data. It could serve as an ideal environment to benchmark Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms in comparative experiments, investigating operational problems featured in the dynamic interactions of discrete manufacturing systems.

Monocular visual odometry consists of the estimation of the position of an agent through images of a single camera, and it is applied in autonomous vehicles, medical robots, and augmented reality. However, monocular systems suffer from the scale ambiguity problem due to the lack of depth information in 2D frames. This paper contributes by showing an application of the dense prediction transformer model for scale estimation in monocular visual odometry systems. Experimental results show that the scale drift problem of monocular systems can be reduced through the accurate estimation of the depth map by this model, achieving competitive state-of-the-art performance on a visual odometry benchmark.

Extracting features from images is a recurring task in applications highly dependent on cameras, mainly on UAV visual navigation. By using sequential images, on different land covers and low-quality images, variable performance is expected based on both modification characteristics. This study applies the techniques GFTT, SIFT, MSER, FAST, BRISK, ORB, AKAZE, and SuperGlue on the dataset KDD-BR 2022, which contains multiple UAV images of various land covers and low-quality images. The performance of each technique on feature extracting and matching is presented while verifying the methods that better generalize this process.

Tropical forests play an essential role in the planet’s ecosystem, making the conservation of these biomes a worldwide priority. However, ongoing deforestation and degradation pose a significant threat to their existence, necessitating effective monitoring and the proposal of actions to mitigate the damage caused by these processes. In this regard, initiatives range from government and private sector monitoring programs to solutions based on citizen science campaigns, for example. Particularly in the context of citizen science campaigns, the segmentation of remote sensing images to identify deforested areas and subsequently submit them to analysis by non-specialized volunteers is necessary. Thus, segmentation using superpixel-based techniques proves to be a viable solution for this important task. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of 22 superpixel-based segmentation methods applied to remote sensing images, aiming to identify which of them are more suitable for generating segments for citizen science campaigns. The results reveal that seven of the segmentation methods outperformed the baseline method (SLIC) currently employed in the ForestEyes citizen science project, indicating an opportunity for improvement in this important stage of campaign development. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Phytoplankton biodiversity is crucial in sustaining a complex food web and upholding vital biogeochemical cycles in the Amazon Floodplain Lakes. However, the ongoing biodiversity threat fueled by climate change and environmental degradation impairs the ecosystem services the Amazon's diverse microalgae community provides. Assessing spatiotemporal changes in inland water phytoplankton biodiversity is imperative to comprehend potential impacts on freshwater quality resilience. Due to limited accessibility and constrained financial resources for field missions, we used a long-term in-situ dataset to propose a remote sensing-based algorithm for retrieving phytoplankton biodiversity in Amazon Floodplain Lakes. Four Biodiversity Indexes — Shannon, Simpson, Margalef, and Pielou — were selected as dependent variables in our model. Semi-analytically retrieved diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd), calculated with in-situ measured Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs) between 2013-2022, served as independent variables for predicting biodiversity indexes based on Sentinel-2/MSI bands. We employed Multivariate Regression (MVR) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms, trained, and tested through Monte Carlo simulation, and validated using co-located Sentinel-2/MSI imagery. Our MVR model presented reasonable results estimating the Shannon Index for both in-situ (errors ~ 10%, R ~ 0.49) and satellite data (errors ~ 15%, R ~ 0.3). It allowed the creation of a comprehensive Shannon Index time series using available Sentinel-2/MSI images from Curuai Floodplain from 2015 to 2023. Lower Shannon Index values were observed during high-water seasons, while higher values occurred during dry seasons. The dry season creates smaller water bodies that foster a greater diversity of water properties and support a broader spectrum of phytoplankton species. The impact of social media in our daily life cannot be overlooked. Harnessing this rich and varied data for information is a challenging job for the data analysts. As each type of data from social media is unstructured, these data have to be processed, represented and then analysed in different ways suitable to our requirements. Though retail industry and political people are using social media to a great extent to gather feedback and market their new ideas, its significance in other fields related to public like health care and security is not dealt with effectively. Though the information coming from social media may be informal, it contains genuine opinions and experiences which are very much necessary to improve the healthcare service. This work explores analysing the Twitter data related to the most dreaded disease ‘cancer’. We have collected over one million tweets related to various types of cancer and summarized the same to a bunch of representative tweets which may give key inputs to healthcare professionals regarding symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and recovery related to cancer. This, when correlated with clinical research and inputs, may provide rich information to provide a holistic treatment to the patients. We have proposed additional pre-processing to the raw data. We have also explored a combination of feature selection methods, two feature extraction methods and a soft clustering algorithm to study the feasibility of the same for our data. The results have proved our intuition right about underlying information and also show that there is a tremendous scope for further research in the area. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.
