AMASE: A framework for composing adaptive and personalised learning activities on the web

Personalised Web information systems have in recent years been evolving to provide richer and more tailored experiences for users than ever before. In order to provide even more interactive experiences as well as to address new opportunities, the next generation of Personalised Web information systems needs to be capable of dynamically personalising not just web media but web services as well. In particular, eLearning provides an example of an application domain where learning activities and personalisation are of significant importance for engaging and enhancing the learning experience of a learner. This paper presents a novel approach and technical framework called AMASE to support the dynamic generation and enactment of Personalised Learning Activities, which uniquely entails the personalisation of media content and the personalisation of services in a unified manner. In doing so, AMASE combines state of the art techniques from both adaptive web and adaptive workflow systems. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Web information systems developers are increasingly seeking apply a 'Web as a Platform' based approach in which web based content and web services are integrated to provide the platform and environment features that are typically offered by desktop environments and applications. Taking such an approach, next generation Personalized Web information systems need to be capable of both dynamically personalizing web media and web services to create customized experiences tailored to the needs, tasks and context of the user. This paper discusses the design, implementation of a framework capable of generating and delivering Personalized Educational Activities. This framework is capable of effectively generating adaptive service work flows and adaptively composing multimedia content, seamlessly integrating the adaptive selection, composition and presentation of content and services based on an educationally driven strategy. © 2012 IEEE.

Ontology matching and mapping is of critical importance to effective consumption of distributed and heterogeneous data-sets in today's Web of data. Since 2004 the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) provides a number of complex challenges to evaluate the performance of the increasing number of matching tools and methods. This leads to the question how the individual OAEI challenges and the individual alignment results can be documented best for effective online consumption, management and further analysis. In this paper, we argue that the current documentation of alignment creation lifecycle aspects within OAEI would benefit from more formal model support. In this paper we present a case study to show how our ontology-based meta-data model for ontology mapping reuse (OM2R) can be applied for the OAEI to document alignment challenges and some quantification on the likely benefits in terms of helping challenge administrators and participants create consistent documentation in terms of high correctness and less inconsistent statements as well as results that are explicit, predictable and easy to interpret.

One to one correspondences between entities are not always sufficient to describe the true relationship between related entities in diverse ontologies, and complex correspondences are needed instead. We demonstrate the types of complex correspondence occurring between two LOD sources and compare techniques for discovering these complex correspondences.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Despite the recent interest in extending Adaptive Hypermedia beyond the closed corpus domain and into the open corpus world of the web, many current approaches are limited by their reliance on closed metadata model repositories. The need to produce large quantities of high quality metadata is an expensive task which results in silos of high quality metadata. These silos are often underutilized due to the proprietary nature of the content described by the metadata and the perceived value of the metadata itself. Meanwhile, the Linked Open data movement is promoting a pragmatic approach to exposing, sharing and connecting pieces of machine-readable data and knowledge on the WWW using an agreed set of best practices. In this paper we identify the potential issues that arise from building personalization systems based on Linked Open data.

A key advantage of Adaptive Hypermedia Systems (AHS) is their ability to re-sequence and reintegrate content to satisfy particular user needs. However, this can require large volumes of content, with appropriate granularities and suitable meta-data descriptions. This represents a major impediment to the mainstream adoption of Adaptive Hypermedia. Open Adaptive Hypermedia systems have addressed this challenge by leveraging open corpus content available on the World Wide Web. However, the full reuse potential of such content is yet to be leveraged. Open corpus content is today still mainly available as only one-size-fits-all document-level information objects. Automatically customizing and right-fitting open corpus content with the aim of improving its amenability to reuse would enable AHS to more effectively utilise these resources. This paper presents a novel architecture and service called Slicepedia, which processes open corpus resources for reuse within AHS. The aim of this service is to improve the reuse of open corpus content by right-fitting it to the specific content requirements of individual systems. Complementary techniques from Information Retrieval, Content Fragmentation, Information Extraction and Semantic Web are leveraged to convert the original resources into information objects called slices. The service has been applied in an authentic language elearning scenario to validate the quality of the slicing and reuse. A user trial, involving language learners, was also conducted. The evidence clearly shows that the reuse of open corpus content in AHS is improved by this approach, with minimal decrease in the quality of the original content harvested. Copyright 2012 ACM.

As information technology interweaves with our daily environment, new modes of interaction will be required. In this paper, we suggest a gesture-based approach and present a prototypical case study for a gesture controlled mobile assistant system for an industrial application domain. We discuss a number of design requirements, that are common to gesture-based interaction techniques, describe the resulting system architecture, as well as the training and recognition process, and an experimental evaluation. We will show that even without too much effort such a system can be realized with standard hardware and algorithms, and still achieve very robust recognition results. © 2012 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). In this chapter we explain the definition of the term (data) exploration. We refine this definition in the context of browsing, navigating and searching. We provide a definition of bisociative exploration and derive requirements on user interfaces, which are designed to support bisociative knowledge discovery. We discuss how to support subtasks of bisociative data exploration with appropriate user interface elements. We also present a set of exploratory tools, which are currently available or in development. Finally, we discuss the problem of usability evaluation in the context of exploratory search. Two main issues - complexity and comparability - are explained and possible solutions proposed. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
